Dear H.C.S.C. Alumni Club Members,

Each of you should have received your own invitation/registration package for the 2013 National H.C.S.C. Alumni Convention in Washington, D. C. Many of you have already decided to attend and have sent in your convention registration forms. That’s GREAT! Since response to the convention invitation has been strong, we are extending the due date for making hotel reservations and sending in your registration form until April 30, 2013. Don’t delay! In addition to catching up with longtime jcpenney friends, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the many historic sites that our nation’s capital offers including several new museums opened in recent years. The cover of this Partners shows the fifty year pin, which will be presented in a special ceremony on the evening of our closing banquet on Saturday, September 28. I know many of you are looking forward to receiving your pin and being honored at this event. For those of you who will be recognized, please see the facing page for additional information. Also, your National Convention invitation/registration packet included special instructions for eligibility and submitting your application. One of the many highlights of our convention this year will be our Fifty Year Pin Ceremony. If you joined jcpenney over fifty years ago (1963 or earlier) and have not already received your fifty year pin, you are eligible to receive a jcpenney H.C.S.C. Fifty Year Pin. Presentations are only made in years with scheduled conventions, so this is your last opportunity for three years.

The jcpenney H.C.S.C. National Alumni Convention will host the Fifty Year Pin Ceremony and honor our recipients on Saturday, September 28, 2013. Each recipient will have their individual picture taken receiving their pin and also receive a group picture. Each will also receive a 2013 Fifty Year Pin Yearbook with the jcpenney history and picture of each recipient in attendance in Washington, D. C. We sincerely hope that you will attend the convention so that you can be recognized and receive your pin. It will surely be a long lasting memory.

In order to be eligible to receive the fifty year pin, you must be a member in good standing (dues paid by the date of the convention) of the H.C.S.C. National Alumni Club. Additional information was included in the H.C.S.C. National Convention invitation/registration package. If you have not completed the fifty year pin application form, please do so as soon as you can. But do not delay your convention registration while you prepare your yearbook information and picture. Send in your fifty year pin application, photo and biography as soon as it is ready.

If you did not receive an invitation, and you believe that you are eligible to receive a fifty year pin, please review our convention web site. Go to www.jcpalumniclub.org, then click on the fifty year pin section to be sure that you are listed. If you are not listed, and you believe that you are eligible, or you did not receive your fifty year pin reservation form, please e-mail us at [email protected] so that we can be sure that you are included in this prestigious ceremony.

and he quickly accepted the job. Though there was a $50 per month pay differential, Wally knew starting out close to home was to his advantage. While at the Burbank store, Wally met his wife to be. They married in 1965.

Wally remembers well his first department manager job well, as it included Boys, Girls, Infants, Womens Budget Dresses and Womens Robes. What a mix of merchandise lines! In 1965, Wally was promoted to North Hollywood, CA as a division manager. For the first month Bob Jenks was the store manager. Jenks was then replaced by Wally Walby. Can you imagine two Wallys in a single store?

In 1968 Wally was promoted to the new Kahala Mall Store in Oahu, Hawaii as a division manager. Earl Williams was the store manager. The store experienced delays in opening, not welcoming customers in to shop until 1970. Later in 1970, Wally was promoted to another new store in Hilo, HA. His new position in Hilo was Sales and Merchandise Manager. Hilo opened on time in late 1970.Senator Innoye was a special guest at the Hilo opening. Wally fell in love with the “Big Island” and still owns a piece of land in Puna, Hawaii. The new shopping center in Hilo, featuring the jcpenney store, was the big attraction on the island. The locals could not believe the assortments of merchandise.

In 1974, Wally was promoted to Sales and Merchandise Manager in our biggest store in Hawaii located in the Ala Moana Mall in Honolulu. Lou Perkins was the store manager. Puka Shell Necklaces were the big fashion item at that time. “We would have locals bringing Puka Shell earrings, necklaces and pins, to our conference room and we would issue them vendor numbers. They would then be paid on the spot. Could you see that happening today?” For two years, the store featured Puka Shells in a promotional booth at the front. Puka Shells eventually worked their

Wally Kendig

Wally was born in Glendale, California in 1939. He graduated from Burbank High School in January 1957. Wally chose to attend Arizona State University, graduating in 1962 with a degree in marketing. While at Arizona State, Wally became a charter member in Sigma Chi Fraternity. Wally also filled out his free time by playing tennis for ASU where he lettered on the varsity tennis team.

Shortly after graduating from ASU, Wally accepted a job with the John Sexton Food Corporation in San Francisco. Before moving to San Francisco, Ernie Culp, store manager of jcpenney in Burbank, CA, called and offered Wally a management trainee assignment in his store. Not having to move to San Francisco sounded good to Wally,

way in to fashion jewelry assortments in many parts of the company.

In 1976, Wally was promoted to Store Manager in Kahala Mall, HA, the very first store he had been promoted to years earlier. Wally loved his 10 years in Hawaii: the people, the culture and the climate. His two sons loved running bare foot almost everywhere. When the family would come to the mainland on vacation, it was hard to get them in to a pair of shoes. Wally’s youngest son David lives today on his 38 foot boat in Alameda, CA. Wally’s oldest son Bill lives with his wife Ani in Poulsbo, Washington. Wally has two grandsons: Tyler attends Western Washington University, Nicholas lives in Madison, Wisconsin and is in training to be a chef.

In 1979, Wally came back to the mainland as Store Manager of Granada Hills, CA. Wally loved living and working in the Granada Hills/Northridge nearby his good friends Tom Crumley who managed San Fernando and Don Mac Neil who managed North Hollywood. In 1987 Wally and his wife divorced.

Two great things happened to Wally in 1989. First he met Diane Green who has been his companion for 23 years. Then Wally was promoted to Store Manager in Los Altos, CA. Los Altos was a mid-tier store that delivered a high return to the company. Wally teamed quickly with Crumley, now the Store Manager in neighboring Long Beach, along with Howard Wiese of Lakewood to hold what they termed

“Chamber Meetings”. They would commonly include Ross Willour from the district office and would use this time to informally discuss changes in their stores and in the company.

After some time the Los Altos Mall was scheduled for a major remodel. But instead of the remodel, the mall was sold. jcpenney made a business decision to close the store. Leaving Los Altos, Wally was assigned to Santa Monica, CA as Store Manager. He remained there until 1998. That year the company decided to close

Santa Monica and Wally took early retirement.

Since retiring, Wally has been active with The First Christian Church in Burbank, Kiwanis, San Fernando Valley Historical Society Pioneer Cemetery, and Sigma Chi Fraternity. Wally enjoys traveling and watching all kinds of professional sports especially the Lakers, the Dodgers and the Oakland Raiders. Wally and Diane also enjoy the fellowship experienced at Southern California H.C.S.C. functions which they attend as frequently as possible.

Holiday 2012 was ushered in early by the Southern California H.C.S.C. Local Meeting Group. The event was held at Portofino’s Ristorante in La Habra, California on Saturday, December 1. Event planning was again orchestrated by Howard Wiese, Vice President of Activities. Guests dined on a tantalizing five course menu featuring many specialties of a grand Italian restaurant. Guests and members arrived around 11:00 am for a social hour with a major emphasis on fellowship. All 55 attendees were immediately found conversing and reminiscing.

Once the guests were seated for lunch, President Frank Fitzpatrick first welcomed past president Ron Rhoads to the front of the room. Rhoads shared about a morning phone conversation he had with fellow member Ron Hudnall. Most everyone has had Ron and his wife of 50 years, Karen, on their minds. Karen has been in a month long battle with her health. Karen had recently been transported back to the Ronald Reagan Hospital at the UCLA Medical Center for further evaluation. Rhoads closed by asking each person to continue their prayers and best wishes for Karen’s complete recovery.

Fitzpatrick then introduced Treasurer Ross Willour who led the group in a spirited recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Paul Simons, H.C.S.C. Foundation representative, followed with his invocation. Simons made special mention of others in our group currently experiencing medical challenges. Paul thanked members who brought a record amount of canned goods that were later distributed to the Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Services.

After lunch, Fitzpatrick addressed the group, introducing several new members. Sandy Gonzales who drove up from San Diego was welcomed. Plus he welcomed Brad and Charlotte Ferguson who also recently joined. The Fergusons reside in Clovis, CA. Fitzpatrick also thanked Ross and Marilyn Willour, as

well as Wayne Harmon and Lu Niesley who drove in to central Orange County from the Palm Springs area.

Fitzpatrick then summarized the upcoming events for 2013 including Spring Fling in Palm Springs in early February, our 2nd annual Partners BBQ at Lake Mission Viejo prior to Memorial Day, our National Convention in Washington D.C. in September, and finally our 2013 Christmas Luncheon planned for December 7 again at Portofino’s. He thanked all for their continued support of the activities.

Fitzpatrick then recognized Wayne Burt who has recently redesigned our local web site. Burt had been conducting throughout the lunch impromptu training of our website using a laptop, a projector and screen. Fitzpatrick closed by welcoming Shirley Bard to the podium who addressed the group briefly. Bard expressed her admiration for the wonderful fellowship that manifests itself when jcpenney retirees gather.

The H.C.S.C. Foundation continues to be busy helping retired jcpenney associates who have found themselves with financial needs. Currently, 17 recipients from across the United States are receiving aid, totaling $220,000 this year. Recipients come from California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.Your donations have been used in many ways to meet their needs. Repairs, purchase of needed appliances, unexpected emergencies, medical payments, and monthly support ranging from $300 to $1,400 per month to meet their financial need.

The H.C.S.C. Foundation needs your help in replenishing these funds to ensure that we will continue to be here in the future to help qualified jcpenney associates with real needs. The fund continues to be impacted by low interest rates and the difficult economy.

Many people give memorials to the H.C.S.C. Foundation and the Honorees are recognized in each edition of Partners. Others have included the H.C.S.C. Foundation in their wills or trusts and H.C.S.C Local Meeting Groups also make contributions. We greatly appreciate any support you can give. Your donations are tax deductible and can be mailed to:

Valley of the SunAround 38 members and guests were welcomed by President Ken Askelson. Ken led the Pledge of Allegiance and Jay Nelson offered the invocation.

A sunshine report was given by Vyda Bridwell, including an early birthday greeting for our former Treasurer, Joe Shelton who would be celebrating 90 on December 22. Additionally, Tom Mason has reached 97 ½ at this time and is looking forward to 98!

Our guest speaker was Dr. Craig Weaver with assistance from Sandi Weaver. Dr. Weaver offered many suggestions on “how to improve” the number one activity in our area – golf. They have two daughters attending college in the Midwest – Notre Dame and Northwestern, with full “golf” scholarships. Lindsay Weaver was named Freshman Player of the Year for her golf expertise.

Several jcp guests were called on to practice Dr. Weaver’s instructions in golf frame work that will no doubt serve them well in their golf outings.

Kristy Putman, Team Leader, Christown Spectrum Mall, Phoenix was guest speaker to “bring us up to date” on the new jcp. Kristy is a seven year employee of jcp. She outlined the new management structure, introduced a young lady, Gabby, who offers fashion and fabric expertise to the shoppers in their facility. Kristy stated that the employees like the new structure, being flexible for ever changing activities that come down the pike at a moment’s notice.

Nine of our Valley of the Sun members will be eligible for 50 year pins at the National Convention in September 2013.

Our group did not offer a formal slate of candidates for the upcoming officer election. However, Tom Putman, Vice President has been elevated to president for 2013 and 2014. We’d like very much to have a volunteer to be vice president. At the March 2013 meeting, a formal election will be conducted, for VP, Secretary and Treasurer.

The attendees offered a generous contribution to the H.C.S.C. Foundation in honor of W. R. and Judy Howell as our charitable organization this holiday season. All funds have been transmitted to Mr. Larry Noble and various receipts have or will be directed to you.

Northern CaliforniaMembers of the Northern California/Nevada Alumni Local Meeting Group within the greater Sacramento Area met at Logan’s Roadhouse Restaurant in Sacramento for our annual holiday luncheon on Tuesday, December 4, 2012.

President David Kloose had invited Pete Sadler, Sacramento District Manager, to be our guest and to bring us an update on what is happening in the stores in his district as they transition to the new jcpenney.

Prior to our luncheon, the group hosted a wine reception for everyone as they arrived. Conversations ranged from recent elections, trips taken, holiday plans, future trips, as well as shopping trips to their local jcpenney store.

Bob Smith mentioned that Joe Salts, retired District Manager and a member of our Alumni Club and a member of the Century Club, will be 100 on March 31. Joe and Mary reside at the Bethel Retirement Community in Modesto, California.

Hal Monroe called Joe on Saturday, December 8, and had a good conversation with him. Joe is in the independent living quarters and Mary is in the assisted living area since she is suffering with Alzheimer’s. His family will be honoring him on his birthday and some of us will carpool to Modesto earlier in March to honor Joe upon reaching 100 and recognize him for his service to jcpenney and our Alumni Club.

Attendees: Bob and Ruthe Hercher, Craig and Margaret Hurt, David and Sandra Kloose, Grant and Marilyn Lund, prospective members Jeff and Donna McKeown, Jim and Edna McKeown, Hal and Mary Monroe, Stan and Kathy Munoz, Dick and Lois Powell, Bob Smith and our guest Pete Sadler, District Manager.

There was no “dashing through the snow” on December 6 for the Mile High H.C.S.C. Christmas lunch this year; nor was the temperature as cold as usual at this time of year in Colorado. No one complained about either of those things, while at the same time hoping for an end to the very dry fall and winter so far. Everyone brought a gift to be delivered to the Marine Corps “Toys for Tots”.

Because the Christmas lunch last year was so enjoyable, we were once again at the Uniscali Restaurant in Castle Rock. The food was delicious and the service impeccable. The first order of business was, of course, greeting and “catching up”. After lunch we heard from Jeremy Reed, manager of the Chapel Hills jcp store in Colorado Springs, about the recent and even more exciting future changes in the company. Genie Enders led us in our traditional carol singing.

The newly elected officers for 2013 were introduced by outgoing President Norm Prince: Jim Malone, President; Bob Enders, Vice President; Ed Trujillo, Second Vice President. This was the first meeting without one of our favorite members, Gloria Hand, who died recently. Her kind and gentle presence will be greatly missed.

Attendees: Doris Anderson; Bob & Mary Brown; Bob & Genie Enders; Larry Feilmeier; Bruce Hand; Chuck & Marina Linn; Jim & Jan Malone; Lou & Bonnie Marsilio; Ed & Mary Beth Trujillo; Norm Prince; Ivan & Margie Stewart; guest Jeremy Reed (Manager of the Chapel Hills JCP store in Colorado Springs)

Thirty four members of the Mason Dixon Local Meeting Group met for their fall 2012 meeting in the hills of Northeastern West Virginia at the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Shepherdstown, founded in 1762, is the oldest town in West Virginia. The three day get together was hosted by Karen Groezinger Bell and her husband, Forest. The Bavarian Inn, which sits next to the Potomac River, is known for its elegance and old world charm as well as its German and continental cuisine.

On Tuesday, October 24, while the golfers were enjoying a beautiful Fall day on the challenging Cross Creek Country Club course, the spouses strolled downtown Shepherdstown and visited the museum. On Wednesday, the entire group took a bus tour of the Antietam National Battlefield in nearby Sharpsburg, Maryland. The battle of Antietam was the worst one day battle, in terms of loss of life, not only during the Civil War but in American Military history.

Wednesday evening, prior to dinner, the group enjoyed a hospitality where old friendships continued to be renewed and the hot topics of the times were discussed. Karen Bell, group President, conducted a short business meeting. Steve Cason, was nominated and elected as our new Mason Dixon President. Congratulations to Steve and Patrice. A treasury report and greetings from members who could not attend were given by Jere Long.

Regards were sent in from Ed & Alice Smida, Don & Judy Hurst, Maddie Miller and Rod & Sharon Rice.

Karen covered the highlights of the recent conference call held by the National H.C.S.C. which included the new membership program and the upcoming National Convention to be held in Washington, D.C. on September 26-29, 2013.

Store Managers and spouses from nearby jcpenney stores were guests of the group for dinner. Brian Paulsen & wife Meredith from Hagerstown, MD and Lora Tolley and husband Russell from Frederick, MD were kind enough to join us, and we were honored to have them. Brian and Lora shared the positive things going on in their stores with special emphasis on the outstanding shops that are in place. A great time was had by all and our special thanks to Karen and Forest Bell for hosting a great meeting.

Attendees: Karen & Forest Bell, Jim & Pat Marine, Phil & Astri Carlson, Joe & Betty McCarthy, Steve & Patrice Cason, Ben & Marcia Preston, Andy & Pat Ferrone, Hank & Pat Rusman, John & Carolyn Head, Kim & Nancy Shults, Joe & Sue Jackman, Chuck & Elaine Slupe, Conrad & Rosemary Kreyling, Harry & Gerry Smart, Karl & Betty Leuffen, Bill & Harriett VanVoorhis, Jere & Charma Long.

The H.C.S.C. Southwest took a trip to the Dallas Arboretum on October 23, 2012.

The group was treated to an outburst of fall colors in a variety of settings, which were a feast to the eye. This arboretum features 66-acres of spectacular display gardens that showcase incredible seasonal flowers, ornamental shrubs, trees and plant collections in a serene setting on White Rock Lake. This year we were treated to the spectacular Chihuly art exhibit presented throughout the gardens. After a two hour tour of the gardens the group had lunch at the Restaurant De Gollier or the Lula Mae Slaughter Terrace located in the heart of the arboretum grounds.

Attendees: Al & Dee Bell, Don & Dorothy Brown with guests Susan Riewe and Hank and Marinez Henry, John Caldwell, Tom & Sandra Clarke, Margaret Filingeri with guests Joan Bronstad and Diane Klein, Judy Harbin, Sharon Leight and her daughter Michele Buckner and Ted and Sonja Spurlock.

Our November lunch meeting was held in Indianapolis at LePeep’s restaurant on November 8, 2012. The meeting was conducted by our President, Jack O’Brien. Our usual contest, guesses on the price of jcpenney stock on November 1, was won by Marianne Wells. Her guess was $24.40 and the price as of November 1 was $24.26. Guesses were then made for May 1, 2013. Future meetings were discussed, hoping for some new ideas. Our next meeting will be May 9, 2013, location to be announced.

We were told that Jim Carney was very ill with cancer of the peritoneal tract. Unfortunately he passed away on November 11. He was a great member and friend and will be greatly missed.

It was announced that we had sent money to the H.C.S.C. Foundation from the group. We didn’t have anyone from the district office or stores as this was a very busy time for them. They were all involved with a lot of changes in the stores.

Attendees: Lyle & Lois Backes, Daryl & Chris Benz, Bob & Portia Hughes, John & Eunice Hughes, Joni Hughes, Tom & Mary Hellman, Jack & Mary Jane O’Brien, Dick & Sue Shankle, Alan & J’Ette Siebold, Bob & Marianne Wells, and Bill & Ann Wright. The Shankles are new members.

From time to time, we receive questions about the different terms we use to describe the various classifications of H.C.S.C. Alumni Club members. For this reason, descriptions of these classifications are provided below:

Lifetime Membership: For a number of years prior to 12/31/2006, our H.C.S.C. Alumni Club Board of Directors authorized members to purchase a “Lifetime Membership.” This eliminated the annual dues for these members. The H.C.S.C. Alumni Club Board discontinued new Lifetime Memberships effective 1/1/2007, as noted in the By-Laws.

Century Club Members: All H.C.S.C. Alumni Club members who reach 90 years of age become “Century Club” members. As a reward for this outstanding achievement, they are then exempt from annual dues. Their names are added to a Century Club plaque and displayed at many of the H.C.S.C. Alumni Club functions.

Fifty Year Pin Members: Fifty year pin recipients are members in good standing (dues paid by the date of the convention) of the H.C.S.C. Alumni Club and have 50 years of service to jcp, including part time and full time work. (For example, if your jcp start date was in 1955, you would become eligible for a fifty year pin in 2005). Fifty year pins are officially presented at each national convention, every three years.

Honorary Members: Spouses of deceased H.C.S.C Alumni Club Members receive honorary membership, free issues of Partners, as well as all other benefits of membership.

The H.C.S.C. Foundation: The H.C.S.C. Foundation is a completely separate organization, with a separate Board of Directors, from our H.C.S.C. Alumni Club. It was established in 1960 through contributions from Mr. James Cash Penney, members of the H.C.S.C. Alumni Club and other sources. Its purpose is to give assistance to jcpenney associates who have financial need. Assistance is given as determined by the Foundation Board. Items reviewed include the applicant’s income, living necessities, and medical expenses. For specific information and to apply, go to www.jcpalumniclub.org and click on the foundation graphic.

Capitol Hill: “The Hill” is known not just for the imposing U.S. Capitol, but for its interesting blend of government buildings, Victorian row houses, restaurants and shops. The Capitol dominates the neighborhood; the Supreme Court of the United States, the Library of Congress and Union Station are other prominent buildings.

Alexandria & Arlington: These distinct Virginia communities across the Potomac River from Washington stand apart from other local areas. Alexandria’s history stretches back to 1699, long before Washington D. C. was formed to become the nation’s capital. Old Town Alexandria boasts hundreds of restored buildings—homes, churches and taverns from the 18th and 19th Centuries. Visitors can walk along cobbled streets and visit the revitalized waterfront. Arlington, on the other hand, is clearly part of contemporary Virginia. Arlington boasts many major attractions including Arlington National Cemetery.

Georgetown: Trendy, fashionable and fun describe the atmosphere in Georgetown, Washington’s oldest neighborhood. It’s a neighborhood of tree-lined streets and handsome brick houses, but it’s also home to Georgetown University and is a popular place to shop, take in dinner and a movie, and, of course, enjoy the nightlife.

Foggy Bottom: Once called Funkstown (after a German immigrant), Foggy Bottom has an institutional and bureaucratic air. It’s the home of the Department of State, the Kennedy Center , the Watergate Hotel complex and George Washington University . Foggy Bottom derived its name during the late 19th Century when smoke from the neighborhood factories and the swampy air of the low ground combined to produce a permanent fog along the waterfront.

Chinatown: Chinatown is a small neighborhood that is easily accessible by Metro or foot from downtown Washington. The neighborhood is marked by the colorful Friendship Archway, and many of the city’s Asian restaurants and shops are here.
