Letter from the Editor

As those first few rays of warm sunlight finally reach us after a windy winter thattousled our hair and chapped our lips, the promise of spring looms in the air. I feel like Ihave so much to say, but I'll just make this letter short and sweet. Spring is a time of newbeginnings. Don't be afraid to be bold and take risks. This philosophy goes for both yourfashion sense and your life.

Hello sun, we've missed you!Jessica Tan, Editor-in-Chief

Spring is coming up soon and while it probably conjures up images of pastelcolors and flowery prints, you don’t have to fall into that trap (unless flowery pastels areyour thing, in which case, go crazy). But if you share Miranda Priestly’s sentiments, thenyou’ll be happy to know that this Spring doesn’t have to be about pastel. Or floral prints.Praise.

As you probably know, neon’s back. It’severywhere and it’s damn dangerous. One neon accessory too many and you’llgo from looking good to looking like aWet Seal clearance bin.The trick to neon, really, is justmoderation. Adding a dash of neon toan outfit will make it refreshing and newenough for Spring, and will keep youfrom being devoured in a sudden flashof florescence.

If you’re not into neon clothes, neon makeup is something to try. In away, it’s harder to mess up than neonclothing because I’m pretty sure you’re allsmart enough not to smear neon pink allover your face. Then again, that might bepretty cool.Like in clothing, neon makeup ismore of a “pop” than anything else. Lipsare probably an easy place to start – lookfor vibrant reds or corals and keep therest of your makeup light. It’s a great wayto be lazy yet put together. Or, you know,do your eyestoo. Go for it.

The biggest lipstick color of springhowever, is fuchsia. It might notcompletely fit under the “neon” but it’spretty bright so you get the point. It alsoshowed up on the runway pretty often, soit’s pretty likely it’ll be a big thing soon.Probably.If you find neon clothing obnoxious, then maybe you’ll feel more comfortablewith patterns. Of course, the traditionalflorals continue to show up, but we don’tcare about those here.

Moschino Dries Van Noten

Page 11: Spring 2013 Issue

A big one this season isstripes. Of all kinds. Big, small, horizontal, intersecting, etc.Whatever. Just stripes. Stripeseverywhere. This is an easier lookto incorporate than neon, asmost people already own stripedclothing and overdoing it willprobably just make you lookedgy. As long as the stripesmatch, of course.

Marc Jacobs

Issey Miyake

Page 12: Spring 2013 Issue

More strictlygeometric patternsand polka dotsshowed up as well.Although generallyless popular thanstripes, they shouldn’tbe too difficult to findespecially after springcomes in full force. For full effect, layercontrastingmonochromaticpatterns on each otherand feel yourselfbecome a grayscalekaleidoscope.

Some more organic style patterns also madean appearance this season, and although not aspopular, this theme can make for great statementpieces. These items can be harder to find at a non-painful price point, but they’re out there. Targetrecently launched a collection with Prabal Gurungyou might still be able to get your hands on, and"quirkier" stores like Modcloth and Anthropologietend to stock photographic and organic patternedclothing. The important thing is that once you finda piece like this, let it be the centerpiece of youroutfit. You don’t want an already busy look tobecome even more complicated.

Jonathan Saunders

Page 16: Spring 2013 Issue

Metallics have also arrived. Theycame about in both the normal andholographic variety, both of which arestriking and becoming fairly common atthe moment. Holographic shoes andpolishes seem to be everywhere right now(good) and metallic pieces are currentlytrickling down into fast fashion stores leftand right. It shouldn’t be hard to findmetallic clothes soon, and personally Ithink the world is all the better for it. Inmy opinion, metallics tend to look greatwith neutrals, but since metallics tend tobe pretty neutralthemselves, it’s hard togo wrong. Just don’tthrow busy patterns inthe mix.

Alexander Wang

Page 17: Spring 2013 Issue

The metallic trend also extends intomakeup, and while it might seem slightlydaunting, it’s really not difficult to pull off. Ifyou want to play it safe, just choose one featureto metalize, and leave the others as you normallywould. Cream shadows tend to have a moremetallic finish, and if you’re unable to find ametallic lipstick you’re comfortable with, just dabsome (lip safe!!) eyeshadow or pigment onto aregular lipstick for added sheen. If you’ve read up until this far, you’vefound a higher Spring calling than pastel flowers. At least, I hope you have. ♠

SEEKING FASHIONby Sarah BochicchioWhile online shopping and flipping through Vogue at the gym canbe satisfying, you may occasionally decide to opt for a deeperlook inside the world of fashion. Therefore, a few suggestionsare in order:

In Documentaries:The September Issue(2009)If you’re only going towatch one documentaryabout fashion, it should bethis one. The film providesan upclose look of thecreation of Vogue’s mostimportant issue, while alsoallowing you to betterunderstand the people whomake it happen. (Available onNetflix)

Marc Jacobs and LouisVuitton (2007)This film gives a behindthescenes look at the workof Marc Jacobs and how hejuggles his two lines: MarcJacobs and Louis Vuitton.

In Vogue: The Editor’s Eye(2013)In honor of the 120thanniversary of Vogue, InVogue: The Editor's Eye is acelebration of the editorsthat Anna Wintour refers toas the “secret weapon” ofVogue.

Bill Cunningham NewYork (2010)An insight into the workand life of photographer BillCunningham, this film alsocontains appearances byimportant figures such asAnna Wintour and DavidRockefeller. (Available onNetflix)

In Exhibits:

Impressionism, Fashion, andModernity (MetropolitanMuseum of Art)February 26 – May 27, 2013The relationship betweenfashion and painting is astrong one, as is revealed atthe Met’s upcoming exhibit. The exhibit will feature theconnections between modernpainting (the impressionists)and modern fashion (the riseof the department store andreadytowear fashions)through the presentation ofthe works of Monet, Manet,Renoir and period clothing.

Boots: The Height ofFashion(The Museum at FIT)March 5April 6, 2013This exhibit highlightsthe power of the boot andits position over the lastcentury. The exhibit’scollection ranges from a pairof boots first worn in 1913to the more recent creationsof Christian Louboutin andYves Saint Laurent.

Now, seek fashion in any way that you choose, so long as youremember:"Always keep your eyes open, you know. Never go to sleep in the car oranything like that, keep watching because whatever you see out the window orwherever, it can inspire you."

CambridgeSatchels‐and the‐Pursuit ofHappiness

Written by Steffi FeldmanFor an inordinately long timethe thing I wanted more than anythingelse in the world was something called aCambridge Satchel. Now, if you’ve beenliving under a rock in regards to theworld of fashion, a Cambridge Satchel isa completely gorgeous leather briefcase-like messenger bag that is perfect and itloves me and I love it and I needed one, okay? I just needed one.So badly.Months passed from the first timeI decided it was the end-all be-all of mylifetime. I coveted. I drooled. I yearnedas if lovesick. I knew, I just knew that ifI could get a Cambridge Satchel, everything would be okay. I wouldn’t beso unhappy sometimes, I would get thatinternship I wanted, I would get alongwith my parents better, I would actuallyremember the combination to mymailbox. Somehow, magically, my everyproblem would be solved. This is not the first time that thishas happened to me. There were otherthings I’ve wanted. It’s been a long,

meandering series and it’s always thesame story. I obsess about gettingsomething-or-other and then when I dofinally get it, either with my own moneyor as a gift from my parents for somebig holiday, it’s awesome and amazingand I’m happy. I really am so happy. Butthen there’s something else.“Now on to the next thing onyour list.” my mother has been known tosay with an infuriatingly justified roll ofthe eyes. The karaoke machine, headphones, an ipod, an ipad, a memoryfoam pillow, rainbow twinkle lights, aDSLR camera, shoes, shoes, shoes, shoes, shoes and now a CambridgeSatchel.I got those other things. Andthanks to the wonderful generosity ofmy aunt, I have the satchel, too. I lovethe things I have, and I use themeveryday. But they’re just that: things. Sowhy aren’t I happy? As a great, pointy-breastedwoman once said, “we are living in amaterial world”. Am I a material girl?Am I so preoccupied with things thatI’ve forgotten what organic joy can belike? I try to have my prioritiesright—I’m a little materialistic, sure, butwho isn’t? I still value my friends andfamily before my shoes. No matter howmany shoes I have. Which is not to saythat I have that many.(Full disclosure, I have a lot of shoes.)The point is, has our consumersociety turned me into a mindless dronewho can only feel joy in the fleetingmoment after a purchase? And whatdoes that say about my capacity forpleasure in the simple aspects of life? Aglance up at the silhouettes the tree

Page 39: Spring 2013 Issue

branches make in the sky, the crunch ofdried pinecones under my heel, the dullmusical thunk and scratch of a squirrelracing me to the bus stop at Haverford.(But seriously, there are SO MANYsquirrels there. They lurk in every tree. It’s like friggin Heart of Darkness overthere—and how are there so many? Isuspect they might import them.)I digress.I don’t know why I’m not happy.I try to be, I try so hard. Sometimes Iam, when I have a nice night with myfriends or watch an especially goodepisode of New Girl. It doesn’t help thatI want to be a writer, a profession wheresteeping your whole self in ennui is theonly way anything of quality ever seemsto happen.I think my problem is that I seehappiness as a destination. If only Icould get this or obtain that, I would bethere. I would be at “happy”. As it

generally goes, that is just not the case.“Happiness isn’t a destination, but rathera journey”. A famous person said that, Ithink, give or take a word. I read it onthe cover of a journal in Barnes andNoble, written in green against amelodramatic black background. It had acool font, that journal. Century Gothic, maybe? But it rang true regardless.Sometimes I take a minute toevaluate my life and I realize that I’m solucky. Just so, so fortunate. I have somuch to be happy about. And in thatmoment, when I tick off my blessingson my fingers, I try not to look weirdand creepy to passersby as I smile andtake a deep breath and hitch up thesatchel on my back as I keep walking, squirrels notwithstanding.I almost bought that notebookwith the green quote on the cover.Almost. But I guess I figured I didn’treally need it. ♠

Mawrters are known for theenergy and enthusiasm that they devoteinto whatever their hearts desire. Thisenthusiasm translates into every part oftheir lives from their energy in classes totheir eagerness to try new things. Thisvibrancy in the student body is visiblytranslated into their clothing choices aswell. While many may overlook the beautyof the outlandish choices that aresometimes made by Mawrters, it is thesechoices that define Bryn Mawr. Othercolleges may face the oh-too-commonplague of an unspoken uniform thateveryone wears on a day-to-day basis. BrynMawr will hopefully never catch thisaffliction because of the diverse voices and

opinions that fill the sacred halls of theMawr. This diversity inspired the idea ofinterviewing a handful of these beautiful, brilliant, and bold Mawrters and finding outwhat they love about Bryn Mawr women, where they shop, and what inspires theirpersonal style.

In the summer, Idress a bit preppier. In the winter and fall it gets the baggiest with more oversizeincorporation.

Where does your style inspiration come from?Flipping through magaizines and liking what they are wearing and trying it oute.g. Elle, Vogue, Nylon and New York magazine. What are some of your favorite brands, vintage stores, places to shop, etc?Vintage store: Local Honey (Nashville)Brands: J Crew, Anthropology, Urban OutfittersMy Mom and family’s closet—long cashmere sweaters from my mom.My Stepmother has this black suede vest from her closet but she wont let me keep it for real.It is the coolest thing I’ve found so far. What do you admire most about Bryn Mawr women and their style?I like that people commit to what they feel like wearing. If they feel like wearing a dress andheels they will be overdressed for class and not care what anyone thinks. Or they will wear aleopard print jumpsuit and commit to it.
