The 2013 baseball campaign at South came to
an end with a 4-1 loss to Mayfield in a Division I
district semifinal on May 24.
It was interesting ride through the spring to get
to that point for the Rebels.
Rebels gained valuable experience playing a
brutal nonconference schedule, went 10-4 in the
competitive Premeier Athletic Conference and
finished with a 14-16 record.
South defeated two of the top four seeds in
Shaker Heights on the road and tournament host
Euclid to win a sectional championship.
“I think the word for the season is inconsistent.
We played inconsistently, but that comes with
the territory when you have a young team and
play a difficult schedule as we did,” South
coach Steve Norris said. “But, the sophomores
and juniors got better throughout the season
and we played well at the end of the year. Our
youth is not an excuse at all. The goal was to
play a tough schedule and have our guys get
better and learn, and we did that.”
Seniors T.J. Lett and Kurtis Moorhead were
among the most decorated Rebels. Lett and
Moorhead were chosen to play in three All-Star
games – The Lake County, Greater Cleveland
Baseball Coaches Association and Ohio Varsity
All-Star Classic.
Lett was also selected as a first-team All-PAC
member and a second-team all News-Herald
pick. Moorhead was named to the second team
All-PAC squad and honorable mention News-
Herald.
Dan Danford was also a first team All-PAC
selection and an honorable mention pick in the
News-Herald. Danny Elliott
was a second team
All-PAC choice and an
honorable mention
selection by the News-
Herald. Mike Fenner
and Brent Harwood
were honorable mention
All-PAC.

BASEBALL - 2013 EUCLID DISTRICT TOURNAMENTTRAINING ATHLETES
AND COACHESLUCK HEADS WEST FOR CAMP
South track coach Matt Luck is very good at what
he does, but he wants to become better.
That opportunity has come knocking on his door.
Luck is headed to the Olympic Training Center in
Chula Vista, Calif., to attend the U.S. Track and Field
Emerging Elite Coaches Camp for Sprints and
Hurdles.
He is one of only 12 coaches nationwide who was
accepted to the camp.
Luck, the head boys cross country coach since 2001
and the head boys track and field coach since
2004, understands this is not only a rare personal
opportunity to learn from and exchange ideas with
the best of the best, but also the chance to bring
back otherwise unreachable experiences to
Willoughby and the South Rebels.
“I want to bring back some knowledge and share
that with the kids in this program,” Luck said. “This
doesn’t mean we will make every kid the fastest or
best kid in Ohio, but it is an unbelievable
opportunity to help these kids reach all of their
goals.”
During his high school years at Kirtland, Luck ran
track and cross country for four years. He was a state
qualifier in cross country in 1985, his senior year. He
remains at No. 9 on Kirtland’s top 10 list of men’s 5K
runners with a time of 17:02.
After graduating from Kirtland in 1986, Luck went
on to run track and cross country at Baldwin-
Wallace University.
He qualified for nationals once in cross country
and twice in track. His junior year, he was an All-
American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Luck, a social studies and history teacher at
South, is one of the most respected coaches in
the area. This opportunity only strengthens an
already impressive resume.
“Athletic director Steve Nedlik has been very
supportive and it is an opportunity I am very
much looking forward to,” Luck said. “Being in
that environment is going to be something
special.”
It’s an environment that only a dozen coaches
across the nation will ever get to share with the
student-athletes in their own programs.
And one Luck intends to take full advantage of
to broaden his own horizons as a track coach, as
well as the kids in the South track program upon
his return.

Anticipation.
That’s the best word to describe Coach Erin Dodson’s outlook at the end of
the 2013 softball season, one that finished with a 14-13 record and a ended in
frustrating fashion with a 3-1 loss to Mentor in a Division I district semifinal.
The Rebels were the defending district champs, but fell to the eventual state
semifinalist Cardinals.
“It’s always frustrating and disappointing when you don’t win,” South coach
Erin Dodson said. “But, especially when you don’t play to your capabilities.
Taking nothing away from Mentor, but if we would have went out and played
our game and got beat then you can accept it a little easier.”
Mentor, which went on to win the district title by beating Riverside, jumped
out to a 1-0 lead, but the Rebels tied the game at 1 in the top of the fifth on
Lauren Blasinsky’s RBI single that scored Morgan Hodge.
The Cardinals scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and hung on
behind the pitching of freshman Allison Golic.
However, the anticipation for 2014 is well warranted as the Rebels return
several key players from a team that showed promise and was highlighted by
some tremendous individual efforts.
Junior catcher Vic Scott earned first team all PAC and second team all News-
Herald honors after hitting .417 with 21 RBI.
Talented sophomore Lauren Blasinsky also was named second team all News-
Herald after finishing with a .428 batting average, 18 runs scored and 14 RBI.
Mo Stohlman was an honorable mention all News-Herald selection.
Junior pitcher Jess Bradshaw had a 2.46 ERA and struck out 88 batters. The
battery of Bradshaw and Scott was named team co-MVPs – a first in the eight
seasons for Dodson as head coach at South.
“In softball, you have to have a good pitcher to keep you in games and Jess
kept us in every game and gave us a chance to win,” Dodson said. “As far as
Vic Scott, I think she is the best catcher in the area and I’m not sure there is a
high school catcher around that knows the game as well as she does. I think she
knows the game as well as any college catcher in my opinion. We are very
excited about next season.
“We lose some great senior leadership, but the kids that will be back won’t have
as much anxiety in big games. They shouldn’t be nervous. They have been there,
now. We have a lot to look forward to.”
Team awards for the Rebels went to Christine Ruple (Coaches Award), Kim Russ
(Most Improved), Mo Hodge (Rookie of the Year), Blasinsky (Offensive player of
the year) and Stohlman (Defensive player of the year).

South sophomore Vince Anzalone cruised through
the Division I Solon sectional and survived a very
difficult Oberlin district to reach his goal of making
it to the state tournament, but if you thought he
was just happy to be going to Columbus, then
you just don’t know Vince.
Anzalone won a pair of matches at the Oberlin
District to take fifth place and qualify for the state
tournament. He had a difficult opening draw in
Columbus, facing the Southwest District winner
Zach Berry of Springsboro in the first match, but
Anzalone prevailed, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. In his second
match at the state tournament, Anzalone won
the first set, but lost in three to Gahanna Lincoln’s
Canyon Teague.
Anzalone missed going to states as a freshman by one match. A year later, he reached the ultimate tournament in
OHSAA tennis and advanced past the first round, but that doesn’t mean he is completely satisfied yet.
“You start the season wanting to get to state, and getting there is fine, but that’s not enough,” Anzalone said. “I
was very proud and honored to be representing South at the state tournament. Being on the varsity court at Ohio
State was a thrill, and it was important to me not to go out and embarrass myself.”
Anzalone is ranked in his age group in the Midwest and has competed in high-level national junior tournaments.
The tennis recruiting network – self-billed as the premier website for junior tennis – has Anzalone ranked as a four-
star recruit.
Anzalone did not take much down time after the high school season and he has been playing in tournaments
around the country, including one in Indianapolis in late June.
He said he has high hopes for his junior season and looks forward to working again with Coach Bruce Myers, who
completed his first spring as head tennis coach.
“I don’t think we could have asked for anything better from a coach. He was great,” Anzalone said of Myers. “He is
calm, but he gets to you when he needs to. I think we were all satisfied with Coach and with how the season went
as a team.”
Senior Colin Greig advanced to the quarterfinals at the Solon sectional before being defeated by Solon’s Nam Le.
Andrew Higgins won his first match at Solon before falling in round 2.

THE NEWS-HERLAD Both South doubles teams fell in straight sets at the Solon sectional.
Vince Fauceglia and Ronith Chakraborty lost to a team from
Warren Howland, and Chris Adams and Joe Gardner lost to a team
from Ashtabula Lakeside.
Anzalone won MVP honors in the PAC where he went undefeated.
He also now has the chance for a rare accomplishment, to be a
three-time News-Herald player of the year. Anzalone put a major
exclamation point on his sophomore season by being named 2013
NH boys tennis player of the year in the June 30 edition.
Senior Colin Greig was named third team all News-Herald.
The season was highlighted by a 7-match PAC winning streak and
a pair of tight losses to league champ Geneva.

BOYS TRACK - OVERCOMING PAIN GIRLS TRACK - LOOKING FORWARDIt was a painful ending to the 2013 track season for
senior Kareem Hunt, but the way things finished in
Columbus did nothing to injure the legacy he built
during his career at South.
On May 29, Hunt finished second at the regional meet
in the long jump with a leap of 21-08 and qualified for
the state tournament for the first time.
Qualifying didn’t come quite as easily in the high jump
as Hunt pulled up in his attempt to make it to Columbus
in the 100M dash with a strained hamstring while still
having work to do at the high jump to make it to the
state meet in his strongest event. After some spur-of-the-
moment therapy and a quick wrap of the right leg, Hunt
was able to summon the mental and physical strength
to clear 6-6 in the high jump and punch his ticket to
Columbus.
The inability to practice at full strength leading into the state tournament proved too big
an obstacle to climb for Hunt, who finished 15th in both the long jump and the high jump –
events he won district titles in -while still nursing the hamstring strain.
“Having a week of not being able to jump was too much for Kareem to overcome,” South
coach Matt Luck said. “We thought the long jump would be the problem in Columbus, but
it was the high jump that was that problem. He was never in any rhythm. He can still jump
really high, but there was no rhythm to the approach.
“I really thought he was moving well the week leading up and the injury wouldn’t be an
issue. But, he just didn’t get to jump a lot in preparation and he never felt comfortable
when we got there.”
“Kareem’s legacy at this school is terrific and his getting to state in two events was just
icing on the cake. It was unfortunate he got injured, but when you take time to look back
and see what he accomplished, I think anyone would agree he had a pretty great
career.”
Hunt qualified for the D-I Austintown Fitch regional in all four of his events and was named
first team All News-Herald. Hunt won three district championships – something never done
by a South male track athlete before – and was the anchor on the second-place 4X100
relay team that set a school record of 43.19 and included Andre Smith, Avery Pantaleano
and Don Martin. Smith, Pantaleano and Martin were chosen as honorable mention all
News-Herald selections.
Hunt won the 100 at the district meet with a strong time of 10.79 despite brutally cold
weather conditions. He took the high jump district title with a jump of 6-4, and he won the
district long jump championship with a 22-06.25 effort.
Other key contributors this spring for South included Tommy Richmond, who ran the 800
and was on the 4x800 relay that dropped 35 seconds of its time. John Gecsey, who Luck
called a “tough kid” developed into a solid 3200 runner for the Rebels.
South finished third in the
Premier Athletic Conference
meet behind champ
Chardon and runner-up
North with 92 points.
Not surprisingly, Hunt had a
standout day at the SPIRE
Institute in Geneva in the
PAC championships.
Thomas Venclauskas finished
second in the shot put with
a throw of 48-06. Also, the
4x200 relay (Stephan Jeffries,
Robert Parker, Smith and Martin)
finished third. Parker finished
fourth in the 400. Maksim
Spasiuk was fourth in the
300 hurdles.
It didn’t take long after the end of the 2013 season for South girls track coach Jim Mormino
to look forward to the spring of 2014.
“We never use youth as an excuse, but we had a lot of girls get great experience in a big
meet for the first time this year and that will be invaluable for them moving forward,”
Mormino said. “These girls got a chance to grown up a lot this season. We will miss the girls
who graduated, but we have a lot of talented kids who scored points for us this year
returning next year and we can’t wait to get going.”
One of the Rebels who won’t return - South senior Emily O’Bryan-Murino - lived up to
Mormino’s preseason expectations by qualifying for regionals in two events.
O’Bryan-Murino finished second in the pole vault at the Division I Mentor District with a 9-0
jump. She also took fourth in the long jump with a 16-8.75 effort.
At the Austintown Fitch Regional, O’Bryan-Murino set the school record in the pole vault by
clearing 9-6, however it was not enough to qualify for the state meet. She also suffered an
injury warming up for the long jump at the regional meet and scratched from that event.
“I’m proud of the things I accomplished and the records I have at South, but I wish I could
have done more,” O’Bryan-Murino said. “I really had a goal to get to Columbus this year.
So that’s a hard thing to leave high school without achieving.”
O'Bryan-Murino was an honorable mention all News-Herald selection.
O’Bryan-Murino joined teammates Larissa Scott and Kate Golnick as Rebels going to the
regional meet in Austintown.
Scott qualified with a fourth-place finish in the district high jump with a leap of 5-0. Golnick
went to regionals in the shot put after finishing fourth with a throw of 35-11.25.
Neither Scott nor Golnick qualified for state at the regional meet, but both are
underclassmen who will return
next season.
“This was a little bit of a surprising
year in that we finished fifth out of
seven teams at the PAC meet, but
we scored more than 90 points and
that beat our total from last year
by 20 and we were very happy about
that,” Mormino said. “Kate and
Larissa both got to experience the
regionals. We have young kids like
Samantha Rus, Kelsey Fiorello,
Alyssa Fioritto and Sam Siepka who
did very well this spring and we are
looking forward to seeing continue
to grow.
“Emily came on very strong and had
a nice season and did what I think
most of us expected her to do. And
I think by next year, all the nerves with the young ones will be gone and you will see them
perform closer to their best.”
Siepka did not qualify for regionals, but was one of the most impressive South athletes at
the D-I Mentor District. The freshman easily surpassed her previous PR in the discus with a
throw of 107-7, which was good for 6th place.
