CELTIC CONNECTIONS

Cornershop have been making perfect records for 20 years. It was with 1997’s ‘When I Was Born for The 7th Time’ album that they moved from the sidelines to centre stage. Their number one single ‘Brimful of Asha’ catapulted the band into the mainstream of British music and onto stages of festivals around the world. American tours with the likes of Beck and Oasis followed and as a creative powerhouse they have been pushing musical boundaries ever since.

Always looking forward, Cornershop are true musical pioneers, melding influences from across genres and continents. 2011’s ‘Cornershop & The Double ‘O’ Groove Of’, featuring Bubbley Kaur saw them kick a contemporary western musical tradition head first into Punjabi Folk.

Don’t miss seeing Cornershop live!

Duration: Approx 4hr Recommended for the whole family

What better way to kick start the year with Celtic Connections; bringing an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary music over a two week period in January and February. We have two evenings of entertainment lined up which are guaranteed to be the perfect tonic to dark long winter nights.

Celtic Connections gigs are recommended for the whole family.

For both evenings a bus will leave Mono, Kings Court at 6.30pm. Call 0141 553 2400 to book you place on the bus. £4 return.

With her band Stereolab, Laetitia Sadier made the most sophisticated pop records of the 1990’s/ 2000’s. When Stereolab announced an indefinite hiatus in 2009 Laetitia set to work on what would be her first official solo album The Trip. The album is a singular and personal look at life’s journey and is a touching and truly mesmerizing record.

Jo Mango has collaborated with musicians such as David Byrne, Devandra Banhart, Vashti Bunyan and Teenage Fanclub. Her album The Moth and the Moon was a haunting and delicate offering with Jo’s softly delivered vocals immersed within a tapestry of unique instrumentation.

Tonight Jo will premiere a brand new work created especially for Celtic Connections. ‘There Was and There was Not…’ a collection of songs inspired by Angela Carter’s wild and dark ‘Book of Fairy Tales’. The perfect antidote to the panto season.

Dan Haywood’s New Hawks are a fresh literate voice on the British musical landscape. Their epic scope marries transatlantic cosmic roots music with a poetic and soulful British folk. A rambling, rolling band whose crazed stage presence, with various players swapping instruments and psychic powers amongst themselves, has already assured them cult status.

Duration: Approx 4hrsBOOKINGTickets for these gigs can also be bought from the Celtic Connections website; celticconnections.com, See Tickets; seetickets.com, Ticket Scotland; tickets-scotland.com, in store at Monorail Music and at the Glasgow Concert Hall Box Office.

P U S HFEB FRI 17 & SAT 18 7.30pm £8 / £4.50 / £3.50 (Local Links)

Following the success of Curious Seed’s award-winning production ‘Found’ in 2009, P U S H is the company’s exciting new full length dance theatre performance.

Created in partnership with Platform and working with members of the local community, P U S H explores the extraordinary stories of ordinary people and reminds us to question what’s important. What pushes us to move, to say something, to push back?

Choreographer Christine Devaney has mixed poetic text, live music and video images to create a visually stunning piece of dance theatre which also involves an ensemble of ‘extra/ordinary’ people. This promises to be Curious Seed’s most challenging and beautiful performance to date.

Funded by Creative Scotland, produced by Catalyst Dance Management and co-produced in association with Platform.

Duration: Approx 70mins recommended for the whole family

HAND ME DOWNMAR FRI 2 7pm MAR SAT 3 2pm

£8 / £4.50 / £3.50 (Local Links)

A photographic memory. Thick brown hair that goes frizzy in the rain. A cameo brooch that belonged to my grandmother. An obsession with list making and thank you letters. Small ears. Asthma. The ability to achieve ten things before breakfast. The knowledge that it’s always important to wear clean underwear as you never really know when you might have an accident… These are some of the things I got from my mother.

Hand Me down is an original show made with ten women from the same family which aims to explore female relationships in families.

Duration: Approx 1hrRecommended for the whole family

BE A PART OF SOMETHINGGlas(s) Performance were interested in making work about families; particularly about the things which are ‘passed down’ between generations, whether it be physical attributes, personality traits or belongings. Through working across communitites, they met Margaret Hendry from Port Glasgow who sent them a poem about the women in her family.

She told them about how every Thursday all of the women in her family get together at her sister’s house and share stories about their week. She invited Glas(s) along to one of these meetings and from the moment they met Margaret, Moira, Helen, Lucinda, Molly, Emma, Francis, Kirsty, Christine and Helen they were hooked…

Come along and hear their story. We know you will be hooked too!

WE ARE ALL JUST HUMAN BEINGS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF OUR LIVESMAY THU 17 7pm MAY FRI 18 7pm MAY SAT 19 2pm £8 / £4.50 / £3.50 (Local Links)

In 2011 Platform created a piece for the National Theatre of Scotland’s Five Minute Theatre project that was broadcast to the world via the web. It was such a success that we are planning to develop and present a new, unique work to be staged in 2012 called ‘We Are All Just Human Beings At Different Stages in Our Lives’ and we are looking for people to join us to create a community cast.

Open to everyone of any age, we are looking for people to participate in a pioneering, professionally led inter-generational theatre, music, film and dance performance project. The performance will be inspired by P U S H, which takes to the Platform stage earlier in the season.

BE A PART OF SOMETHINGWe are looking for participants to create this unique performance. Free weekly workshops will give you a chance to sample drama, movement, writing, sound and film; even the behind-the-scenes stuff if you fancy. All aspects of crafting a professional theatre production will be explored. The only limit is your imagination, and your own stories and life experiences can play a part too. If you are interested in the performing arts, are enthusiastic and

willing to give new things a try, then this is the project for you. This opportunity is free and open to all ages (we warmly welcome anyone of any age, however if you are aged under 11 years please contact us to discuss things in more detail).
