We thank you for your continued support and ask for renewed support from those who have drifted away from SJCC or who have not been able to contribute time, talent or treasure in the past. Please consider donating to the Annual Fund: it supports each Campus in the BHCS system and that is what will keep SJCC thriving and providing our graduates with a promising future.

As we move through this school year, our theme has been a cornerstone of all we do and why we do it. “Respect the Past, Celebrate the Present, Build the Future”

We Respect the Past: of the people, the traditions, the core values and the treasured memories. If we only live in the past, however, we will never move forward and we will miss many opportunities to learn, grow and succeed. For example, many people have had concerns about the name of our con-solidated school system, BHCS, and believe that we have changed the name of our high school - SJCC. We have not changed the name of our high school. It has been and remains SJCC. SJCC is the only Catholic high school in Sandusky County but it cannot stand alone and relies on collaboration with the SH and SJ Campuses. By supporting BHCS – you support SJCC.

We Celebrate the Present: with the students, the parents, the staff, the volunteers and the day-to-day events we participate in. Our Winter sports concluded with an increase in student spirit – the best student section around. We have seen success as ath-letes advanced to District bowling competition and State wrestling. We have seen 8th - 12th grade students from other schools visit us during Catholic Schools week. We have seen new service clubs, students preparing for the Sacraments, more children coming to Mass and the Parishes including school information in the weekly bulletins. Each day we celebrate, honor and cherish each child who walks through the door. By supporting BHCS – you support preschoolers, grade school, middle school and high schools students who are allowed to learn and live the Faith through Jesus Christ each day they come to school.

We Build the Future: for the students with strategic planning, implementation of technology, high quality professional develop-ment, renewed focus on Catholic Identity and innovative strategies to “tell our story” and meet the needs of all learners. We are in the self-study phase of our system-wide accreditation plan and identifying strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement. We are increasing the use of technology with site-based use of iPads at each Campus through a teacher-driven pilot program. We are participating with the University of Notre Dame through a webinar series that focuses on building-based intervention teams to meet the needs of all learners. We continue to work together with the Parishes to increase student and family involvement in weekend Masses. We are offering more options for 8th grade students to take classes for high school credit. We are participat-ing with the Ohio Department of Education so parents of students with disabilities can receive funds to cover their tuition and service delivery needs. We have built a positive relationship with the News Messenger and we continue to tell our story through our revised, interactive and ever-changing website.

We have only just begun. We are vigilant in our purpose. We will honor the past as we rejoice each day along the way to a brighter future.

God bless you, your families and thank you again for all you do for the kids we serve each day.

Hall of FameOn Sunday, May 6, St. Joseph Central Catholic will induct its newest members into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Being recog-nized for their outstanding contributions to the school’s ath-letic programs and their communities, Jill (Schneider) Steyer, Doug Young and Kirk Kayden will be honored at a ceremony to be held at SJCC. Social hour begins at 4:00, dinner at 5:00 and the induction at 6:00. Tickets are $22.00 and available in the SJCC office.

Jill (Schneider ‘90) Steyer During her high school days at SJCC, Jill (Schneider) Steyer earned four varsity letters. On the basketball court she earned two letters playing for Coach Geller. She was the team’s Most Improved Player her junior year and the MVP her senior year. Also in her senior year Steyer was named 2nd Team both in the District Six Coaches Poll and the Northwest Ohio (AP) Poll. She was also Honorable

Mention All-State in the AP poll and Special Mention All-State in the (UPI) Poll. She was named to the 1st Team All-MAL her senior year as she led the Streaks to the regional semi-finals. During the three years Steyer played for the Lady Streaks, the varsity record was 58-15, including perfect MAL records her sophomore (8-0) and junior (16-0) years. Earning two more let-ters in softball, she played first base for the Streaks. During her two varsity seasons the Streaks were 19-15. Jill led the Streaks in hitting her junior year and was named 1st Team All-MAL. In her senior season she led the Streaks to a third place finish in the league. She was once again named 1st team All-MAL and Honorable Mention All-Northwest Ohio. In 1996 she earned her Associate’s Degree from Professional Skills Institute in To-ledo. She is employed by PT Services as a physical therapist assistant. Jill is married to Randy Steyer and they have four children, Anthony, Gregory, Daniel, and Mickaela.

Doug Young ‘87 Doug Young earned six varsity letters while playing for the Streaks-three in football, one in basketball and two in baseball. The Streaks Football Team posted a 16-15-1 record during his play-ing days. He was injured his junior year, however he made it back to play in the second round of the playoffs against Del-phos Jefferson. Doug was named MVP and top defensive player his senior year, as well as 1st Team All-MAL, MAL De-fensive Player of the Year, 1st Team All

Northwest Ohio (AP), Special Mention All-State (AP) and 2nd Team All-State (UPI). After earning one letter in basketball his junior year and two in baseball, he earned an appointment to the Air Force Academy where he played football, lettering his final three years. His senior year they beat Ohio State in the Liberty Bowl. Doug earned his Bachelor’s Degree in physics in 1991. He then earned his Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Sci-ence from the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2001.

Boys BasketBall The varsity boys’ basketball team finished the season with an 11-10 record. They started strong but struggled to find consistency throughout the season, suf fer ing several disappointing losses. The team was led by a strong group of players, including first team MAL player Jordan Sessler. The Streaks lose seniors, Casey Effinger and Austin Jess, however, Sessler, Zach Yeckley, Luke Stierwalt, Connor Dudley, and Ryan Williams will all return next year with high expectations.

Winter Sports

wrestling Coach Mike Naufel prepared the wrestling team well despite not filling all of the weight classes this season. Individually, the boys tuned in many solid performances. Highlighting the season were strong District performances from Corey Durbin and Tivo Ysasi. Durbin finished the District meet fifth while Ysasi placed fourth, earning a spot at the State meet. Seniors Ysasi, Brandon Steinberger, Jon Braun, Daniel Boyer, and Justin Distel led the team and will be greatly missed next year.

swimming Led by a strong group of seniors, the swim team had a very successful season. Veteran coach Kevin Casey pushed the swimmers to many record breaking finishes and took the largest group of girls ever to the District meet. Emily Ronski, Katie Stierwalt, Christine Wise, Leah Binsack, Caroline Darr, and Brigette Fulwider were part of three relay teams that qualified for Districts while Ronski and Binsack both made it individually in the 50 yd freestyle. The boys’ team did well despite low numbers. Seniors Zeke Rodriguez, Aaron Staib, and Ben Ysasi improved greatly throughout the season and will surely be missed.

girls BasketBall Seniors Tori Smith, Taylor Flick, Alex McNair, and Haley Meek provided leadership with strong support from Brennan Reardon, Cassidy Frank, and Amanda Binder. However, starting the season with several injuries, the girls’ basketball team knew they had their work cut out for them. The coaches encouraged and inspired the team to play their best and they finished with a 8-13 record. Hard work in the off season and a strong group of returning letter winners should help the team rebound for next season.

Bowling The boys’ and girls’ bowling teams turned in the best performance St. Joe has seen in many years. On the boys’ team, senior Zak Molyet made it all the way to the District match. With strong performances by Logan Hartley, Zack Zavela, John Hoffman, Derek Zavela, and Molyet, the boys also produced several impressive wins. The girls team was led by junior Katie Harmon. They also had many successful matches throughout the season and will return their starting five bowlers next season.

After serving numerous tours overseas, Major Young has re-turned to once again teach at the Air Force Academy. He has one daughter, Elyse.

Kirk Kayden ‘92 On the links Kirk Kayden was certain-ly more than just par. He earned four letters while playing for Coaches Jude Meyers and Charlie Baker. During his four year career the Streaks compiled a record of 63-9. They finished second in the MAL his first two seasons and were MAL champs his last season. In his freshman year Kayden helped the Streaks earn a trip to Columbus for the state tournament. They finished 7th. As a sophomore he finished

second in the MAL tournament thus earning his 1st Team All-MAL honors. He also qualified for the state tournament as an individual and finished eighth overall. His finish earned him 1st Team All- State honors. As a junior Kayden led the Streaks to 1st place in the MAL, 1st place in the sectionals and 4th place at districts. The Streaks once again earned a trip to the state tour-nament. Led by Kayden the Streaks were just three strokes off the pace and finished in second place. Kirk earned 1st Team All-State honors for a second straight year. In his final season the Streaks went a perfect 19-0, finishing 1st in all three of their invitational tournaments, 1st in the MAL, 1st at sectionals, 1st at the districts and 2nd at state. Kayden shot a 148 in Co-lumbus and finished as the medalist of the state tournament. He was also named the Ohio High School Golfer of the Year. Kayden accepted a D1 golf scholarship to play for the Univer-sity of Toledo. While at UT he started and lettered three years. He was also named 1st Team All-MAC. He earned his Bach-elor’s of Arts Degree in Sports Management in 1997. Kayden was the golf coach at Tiffin Columbian High School and Terra Community College. He was an assistant golf professional at both Fremont and Sylvania Country Clubs. After three years of being an assistant golf coach at Penn State University, Kayden became the head men’s golf coach at Austin Peay State Univer-sity, a position he still holds today. Kirk and his wife, Melissa, have one daughter, Madeline. Congratulations to our three new inductees.

Streak of Genius

Perhaps more than most of us, Ken Dumminger ‘64, recognizes how pre-cious life truly is. Dumminger, who opened his store, Dumminger Photo, forty years ago in Fremont, Ohio, has a new liver and new hope for the fu-ture. Dumminger, a 65 year old pho-tographer, received a liver transplant on January 22, 2002. He suffered from crypto genetic biliary cirrhosis that ravaged his liver. The cause of Dumminger’s liver disease is unknown. After months of waiting for a donor liver, Dum-minger received one “just in time.” Since the liver transplant, Dumminger remarks he “now feels better than he has in years. It’s good to be alive!” Every moment is special for Dumminger especially when he recalls how ill he was with his liver disease.

Dumminger reflects on how fortunate he was to receive a liver when he did. When he first became ill, doctors were unable to diagnose exactly what was wrong with him. Finally, in Janu-ary of 2001, a doctor at The Cleveland Clinic told Dumminger he needed a new liver. Dumminger vividly recalls that day “I went to the clinic alone because I thought the doctor would not have a diagnosis. The doctor’s report about knocked me on my ear. When I gave my wife the news, I recommended she be sitting down.” After Dumminger’s shocking diagnosis, he was put on a waiting list for a donor liver. As he waited for months, his condition worsened. Dumminger suffered from low blood pressure and extreme fatigue. He comments, “I was tired, and I struggled to do what I had to do.” Dumminger’s brother at-tempted to donate his liver; however, he was tested and re-jected. Dumminger remained optimistic. He received two possible donors, but these were also rejected. Dumminger re-calls, “I had three strikes, and I was feeling very poor.”

Dumminger’s condition worsened. On January 8, 2002, he was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic for IV therapy and tube feed-ings. His kidneys eventually failed, and Dumminger underwent kidney dialysis. At this point, Dumminger felt he had no con-trol. He comments, “I was at the mercy of the whole hospital staff. My wife and daughter stuck with me through the entire experience. I remember clearly, by January 21, they thought they had lost me; however, I never considered defeat. I was go-ing to win one way or another. I told my family, ‘I’m a tough street fighter from Northwest Ohio, and if He wants me, He’s going to have to come and get me.’” Miraculously, on January

22, another donor liver became available. This time, the liv-er was compatible, and after a lengthy surgery, Dumminger received a new liver. Dumminger recalls immediately af-ter surgery checking his skin for jaundice. Postoperatively, Dumminger suffered heart complications and a stroke that left him unable to speak for several days. Ten years later, Dumminger reports to feel much better than he has in years. He is reminded of his past experience as he must take medi-cation to prevent organ rejection, and he has a large scar from the surgery.

Dumminger’s family and community supported him through-out his illness. He comments that his great staff “stepped up to the plate.” His sister helped serve business clients while other jobs were “put off.” Dumminger comments, “I live in a community in which my customers understood, and they continue to be my customers today. This says a lot about the importance of service and my relationship with my clients. I have some amazing customers.”

Dumminger’s donor’s name was Dusty. Dusty was a fire-fighter who was on his way to a fire-call when he hit a patch of black ice, lost control of his car, and was tragically killed. Dumminger states, “Dusty is a hero.” Dusty not only do-nated his kidney, but he also

donated other organs that helped eight people that night. Dumminger now shares his story to educate and promote awareness of organ donations. He speaks to many groups in hopes that other lives can be saved through organ donations. Dumminger explains, “It’s something people may not think about until it happens to them. I was given life through organ donation, and I want to share my story with others.”

Pictured right is Ken is with his wife Roz, a transplant recipient in 2000, and nephew Brandon, a transplant recipient in 1987. Dumminger says “We have been blessed and miracles do happen”.
