Four Briar Cliff student-athletes have been named GPAC and NAIA Athletes of the Week. Tara Cockerill, Spalding, Neb., was named GPAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for Jan. 23-29. Cockerill won the shot put at the Dennis Young Classic with a 45-1.50 throw, giving her a new personal best, new indoor school record and new meet record. Her throw was the second-best this season in the GPAC and fourth-best in the NAIA. Taylor Murren, Wahoo, Neb., averaged 18.0 ppg for Jan. 16-22, earning Murren GPAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Murren also was recognized for helping the Chargers pick up two wins and improve to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in GPAC. Augustus “Raheem” Cowan, Hartwell, Ga., was named GPAC and NAIA Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for Jan. 9-15. Cowan has set school records in both triple jump and long jump on his way to a first-place finish in both events. His long jump mark of 22-07 nearly trumped the NAIA provisional mark. His triple jump mark of 49-03.50 was the best in the nation this season. Kelsey Evans, Willmar, Minn., averaged 16.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as she earned Most Outstanding Player honors at Briar Cliff ’s Holiday Classic in December. Evans was named the GPAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 26-Jan. 1.

GPAC and NAIA select Athletes of the Week for in-season sports. Student-athletes who are selected at the conference level become eligible for the NAIA honor.
