35Y E A R S
• Special features in OWL Magazine throughout the year
• A big birthday issue in June 2011
• Events with our OWL editors
• An opportunity for former OWL readers to reminisce
• Cool, retro OWL stuff like T-shirts
• And lots of other celebrations in the works!
What a Celebration! We plan to have agood time for the
whole year.
he kids who first read OWL decades ago
are now grown up, and many of them are parents. By all accounts, they have fond
memories of those years and
felt like OWL was something
made just for them.
Thirty-five years later, those
goals still rule what we do. Even
though so much has changed, kids
are still curious and interested in
the world around them, and
Owlkids is here, keeping in touch,
feeding their minds, and showing
them the respect they deserve.
OWL is Celebrating its 35th Birthday in 2011

35Y E A R S
January 1976 — The very first edition
of OWL, the Canadian nature and science
magazine for children 8–12, was published.
The magazine’s goals were at once simple
and complex. And they were revolutionary
for the times. They were: • to appeal to kids at their level and be fun
• to connect with them and tell them what
they wanted to know in ways they wanted
to hear it• to listen to them and make it a conversation

“Hoot if you love OWL!”What a great bumper sticker that would make!
It’s amazing when you think about it. Thirty-five years ago, an idealistic group
of people had a dream to make a new kind of children’s magazine: one that
really spoke to kids. Today, that legacy has meant so much to generations of
children and their parents.
Much has changed since those heady days in the ’70s. OWL has become
Owlkids to reflect the fact that we’ve grown from one magazine to three
magazines and a book publishing company. In fact, that first magazine spawned
many award-winning and beloved products over the years: chickaDEE
Magazine was launched in 1979, and Chirp was born in 1997. OWL/TV was a
family favorite throughout the ’80s and ’90s. Books were published under a
variety of imprints including Greey de Pencier, Owl Books, and the two we
use now: Owlkids and Maple Tree.
In keeping with the times, our books and magazines are now available to
enjoy on computers and e-readers, enabling us to connect with kids in one
more way.
As a former OWL subscriber, leading the team at Owlkids is a dream come
true for me. And the dream of creating content that resonates with kids
still lives on at our company. Over the years we have adapted to children’s
changing interests, adopted innovative ways to present information, and
continued to talk to kids about what they want to read. Throughout it all we
have stayed true to our mission: to respect children’s intelligence, creativity,
and curiosity above all.
We couldn’t have done it without the talented artists, writers, editors, and
photographers we work with each and every day. And a special thank you to
all of the passionate booksellers, librarians, teachers, and parents who have
supported us for more than three decades. Owlkids will continue to create
the books and magazines that you love!

You Just Can’t Help It!Your Guide to the Wild and Wacky
World of Human BehaviorBy Jeff Szpirglas • Illustrated by Josh Holinaty
How many times have you been frightened and felt the hairs on the back of your neck stand up? Or been unable to hold back a yawn? Or flinched when someone reached out to tickle you? The thing is, you just can’t help yourself — you’re only human! Part Desmond Morris’s The Naked Ape, part MAD Magazine, and all Jeff Szpirglas, this unique book provides a cultural, historical, and socio-biological perspective on human behavior.
Szpirglas’s goofy, kid-friendly sensibility paired with the book’s look, energy, and scope is guaranteed to engage and captivate young readers. Kids will read about body language, birth order, staring contests, fits of laughter, crowd behavior, sniffing dirty diapers, dreaming, and the art of lying — only to realize that science is at work behind each action!
You Just Can’t Help It! is an enthralling and slightly zany exploration of the basic human biology that determines our reactions, social interactions, and the ways we communicate with one another.
JEFF SzPIRGLAS is a critically acclaimed author and elementary school teacher. He lives in Toronto.
JOSH HOLINATY is an internationally exhibited artist who has done work for The Globe and Mail and Broken Pencil magazine. He lives in Edmonton.

Arctic StormBy Frieda WishinskyIllustrated by Patricia Ann Lewis-MacDougall
Can Emily and Matt brave the storm and help their new friends to safety?
Since discovering the Canadian Flyer, a magical time-traveling sled, in Emily’s attic, Matt and Emily have outrun dinosaurs in the Alberta badlands, seen the Silver Dart soar high in Nova Scotia’s skies, and evaded slave catchers on the Underground Railroad. In Arctic Storm, Emily and Matt find themselves stranded in the Far North in 1976 — and a squall is on the way!
After a shaky landing on snow-covered ground, the two friends meet a team of research scientists studying wolf and caribou migration and habitat. Problem is, the scientists are traveling without their guide, they’ve lost their radio and half their supplies (including food and a stove), and now a storm is coming.
To make matters worse, Arthur, the son of one of the scientists, is becoming increasingly ill and needs a doctor. And after the group is spooked in the night by howling wolves, they wake up the next day to find their lead sled dog missing! Can Matt and Emily brave the storm and help their new friends — especially Arthur — back to safety? And will their faith in Moon Dog, the least experienced sled dog in the pack, help him lead the group through the storm?

The Rumor A Jataka Tale from India
The Rumor is a retelling of the classic “the sky is falling” story, set in the lush landscape of India, and features endangered animals as the main characters. Nature leaps off the pages of this magnificant book,
which pairs the award-winning titles The Wildlife ABC and The Wildlife 123, creating a collection where children can explore simple learning concepts through familiar animals.
The Wildlife ABC & 123 A Nature Alphabet & Counting Book
Before & After A Book of Nature Timescapes
Beautifully detailed painting puzzles depict nature’s subtle and dramatic changes over spans of time.
This 19th-century rhyme is revived by Jan Thornhill’s unique digital artistry. Thornhill has created a world made up of everyday objects. Whether it’s a beaver dam of pretzels or a dragonfly with paperclip wings, children will enjoy picking out the familiar objects in the illustrations as much as they will enjoy listening to this delightful folk rhyme.

Sir Seth Thistlethwaite and the Soothsayer’s ShoesBy Richard ThakeIllustrated by Vince Chui
This animated, alliterative series debut introduces young readers to Sir Seth Thistlethwaite and his buddy Sir Ollie
Everghettz, leaders of the Mighty Knights of Right & Honor, and the made-up world of Thatchwych, where our gallant adventurers embark on their first quest. With the help of their horse (who’s really a dog named Shasta) and the saber-toothed sloth Edith-Anne, the boys must avoid the dangers of dog-eating bog frogs, fire-breathing bats, elephant ants, and invisible voices to save the day and return the stolen pair of soothsaying shoes to their rightful owner.
RICHARD THAKE has finally found the time to write the Sir Seth series — a thinly disguised glimpse into his own childhood adventures exploring the Don River valley and The Beach areas of Toronto. He lives in Newcastle, ON.
vINCE CHUI has worked on character design for video games for Sega, Xbox 360, and PS3. He lives in Toronto.
About Sir Seth ThistlethwaiteThis chapter-book series chronicles the adventures of 10-year-old buddies Seth Thistlethwaite and Ollie Everghettz. The two buddies, who’ve dubbed themselves the Mighty Knights of Right & Honor, are out to save the world — or solve even smaller dilemmas — embarking on some imaginative “daily knightly” adventures. The tongue-twisting humor, action, and adventure of each story makes this series both challenging and appealing — especially to boys.
