New Scholarship and New Academic Programs

Kentucky Wesleyan College is celebrating the past and preparing our students for the future with a unique, innovative scholarship and new programs designed to celebrate and encourage success.

Overachiever AwardThe College will award a unique scholarshipto students who “overachieve” and exceedacademic expectations. After their freshmanyear, KWC students who exceed a predictedGPA (based on their high school GPA andACT scores), will be awarded more financialaid for their sophomore year. If a studentcontinues to exceed expectations, he or shewill maintain this extra financial aid fortheir junior and senior years.

Faculty and administration strongly believestudents should not be held back bystandardized test scores or past academicperformance. This unorthodox approach isunusual in higher education. When acollege or university successfully recruits astudent with an academic award, the awardremains constant as tuition increases.

The new Overachiever Award will beavailable to this year’s freshman class andfuture freshman classes.

Online Degree Completion ProgramsKentucky Wesleyan will offer two degreecompletion programs at reduced tuition ratesbeginning in the fall of 2008. The programs,a B.S. in Business Administration and a B.S.in General Studies, are intended for studentswith at least 65 credit hours.

The General Studies program is designed toprovide an excellent, interdisciplinaryeducation with flexibility geared to workingadults pursuing a college degree. TheGeneral Studies major explores a variety ofareas with an individually tailoredcurriculum, instead of the traditional singleacademic major.

MBA ProgramThe College submitted a proposal to ouraccrediting agency for a Master’s in BusinessAdministration with final approvalanticipated in June.

The program, designed by Dr. Jim Welchand his colleagues, features eight-week termsand face-to-face evening classes. The MBAis designed for working adults.

What does Owensboro, Kentucky have that you can’t find in Irvine,California other than snow and ice during basketball season? Todd Lee willtell you in a hurry. “Owensboro is the perfect place to raise our family,” hesays. “People are friendly, and we live in a close-knit neighborhood. Thereis a great sense of community here.” He explains that they didn’t even knowtheir neighbors in Irvine. Add to that nice front and back yards, almostunknown luxuries to many Californians, and the Lee family is happy.

The Lees arrived in Owensboro in May 2005. His wife, Kim, is an Evansvillenative and physical therapist. Carson, age 9, and Jackson, age 7, attendHighland Elementary. Peyton, age 3, attends Lourdes Preschool. It is nosurprise that the boys love basketball. “They are very proud of Dad,” saysKim, “and nothing pleases them more than attending a Panthers’ game.”

Lee is a Huron, South Dakota native. He earned a B.S. in BusinessAdministration from the University of South Dakota and an M.A. inEducation with an Emphasis in Physical Education from Azusa PacificUniversity. He began his career as an assistant coach at Southwestern JuniorCollege in Chula Vista, California. As head coach of the Rapid CityThrillers, he took the team to China in 1993, a first for a professional team.

He spent three seasons as assistant coach at California State University atBakersfield, where the team won the Division II National Championship in1997. Before his arrival at Wesleyan, Lee spent eight years on the coaching

staff at the University of California at Irvine where he was associate headcoach for four years. The team won 52 out of the last 66 games prior to hisdeparture from Irvine.

Todd Lee wanted to be a head coach. “The GLVC is the best Division IIleague in the country, and I wanted the challenge of building a team thatcould compete on a national level.”

“Todd is a championship architect who leads by example,” says KWC SportsInformation Director Roy Pickerill. “He loves basketball, but he’s also aboutfamily and community.”

Lee says he wants his players to be champions on the court and championsat life. “I want our players to be active in the local community and leaveKWC with a service-oriented outlook on the world around them,” remarksLee. The team started a reading program at Foust Elementary and volunteerswith the Special Olympics and the Junior League.

Kim says Todd keeps a journal for each son. He includes information aboutbasketball and a diary of each boy’s life. Every page is sprinkled with Lee’sfavorite quotes, including many from UCLA coaching legend JohnWooden. They are lifetime keepsakes for the three Lee boys written by acoach - and a dad.

John Jones ’67 describes the evening of January 3,2000 with emotion. He watched from his officewindow as a late afternoon thunderstorm rippedthrough Owensboro. What he didn’t know wasthat an F-3 tornado had just ransacked the campusof his alma mater. “We’ve been hit,” saidKentucky Wesleyan President Wes Poling whenhe called Jones at home early that evening.

Jones jumped in his Bronco and carefully made hisway to the campus amid downed trees and powerlines. “It seemed like God had unfurled a hugeblack sheet over the city,” he says. There were nolights anywhere except the beams of hisheadlights. Inspection of the campus revealedsignificant damage to every building with roofsblown across campus, trees uprooted and debris inunlikely places. “Our college looked like a warzone,” he says. “It was an eerie and heartbreakingsight.”

An Owensboro native, Jones’ relationship to thecollege began long before the night of the tornado. He earned his degree from Kentucky Wesleyan in1967 with a major in business and a minor in

psychology. He was a faculty member for eightyears and became a college trustee, the youngest toever serve, in 1972.

Family members and friends describe Jones as adevoted family man and church member, avidhunter and fisherman, and car and motorcycleenthusiast. He is president and CEO of ModernWelding Company, Inc., an Owensboro-basedfamily-owned business founded by his grandfather,“Mr. Pete” Barnard in 1932.

Johnny and his wife of 46 years, Sylvia, have twogrown children, Jeff and Julie. They both live inOwensboro and attended Kentucky Wesleyan.Jeff works in international sales at ModernWelding, and Julie is a domestic abuse counselor.

No one can keep up with this Jones, according tohis friends and family. “Johnny has unbelievableenergy and enthusiasm and curiosity,” says long-time friend Wayne Foster. “You can’t bring up anysubject he doesn’t know something about, and heremembers details from years ago like no one I’veever known.” Foster and others say what they

most admire about John Jones is something hedoesn’t want people to know. “He never seeksaccolades,” says Foster, “but he quietly does somany things for so many people.”

When Jones reflects on the upcoming celebrationof KWC’s sesquicentennial, he talks about thecollege’s rich heritage as a private, faith-basedinstitution. And he remembers that January nightin 2000. “I think about how absolutely dark it wasas Wes and I explored the campus,” he says.“Then we saw the light in the window.”

What they saw was the battery-operated light inthe cupola. The weather-vane was askew, butJones says the light was a sign of hope in thedarkness. He sometimes looks up at the familiarcupola today and remembers that night. He saysthe cupola is a beloved college symbol that meansmore to him now that it did before the tornado. “Isee it as a symbol of how Wesleyan has survivedand thrived through many challenges in the last150 years.”

The Winchester Class of 1944 gathered aroundbig cabinet radios to catch the news and listen tothe latest music. The Owensboro Class of 2009relies on the Internet, iPODS and cable TV. Sowhat do Luellen Pyles ’44 and Matt Ruark ’09have in common?

Pyles, who earned a degree in Latin with minorsin Spanish, German and Business Studies, grewup on the Winchester campus. Her father,Henry Milton Pyles ’22*, taught at the collegefor 42 years. According to his daughter, ProfPyles knew how to multi-task long before theterm was a popular buzz word. Pyles not onlytaught, he also served as registrar for 25 years andwas director of alumni and academic dean. Hermother, Nell Ball Pyles, served the college invarious capacities for 43 years, including manyyears as secretary to the president.

Luellen Pyles attended her first college class as atwo-year old with a student babysitter. As a gradeschool student, she sat on books piled in a chairto type alumni reports for her mother. “Everyoneknew everyone on campus, and so many made somany sacrifices for KWC,” she says. “I look back, and know I was in the presence of greatness whenI was growing up.”

Pyles says 80 students initially enrolled in herclass at Wesleyan. But there were only 19 whograduated in 1944. “I went to college during thewar years, and so many were drafted,” she says.“It was a tough time for everyone.” Aftergraduation, she taught in high schools inKentucky and Ohio and earned her master’sdegree in Spanish from the University ofKentucky in 1950. She then became executivevice president of a Cincinnati marketing firmwhere she did advertising and consumer researchfor 25 years. She developed innovative researchmethods that are still in use today, and sheopened branch offices in five foreign countries.

She joined the KWC Board of Trustees in 1972.“I’ve always felt that my job on this earth was tohelp the college,” she says. She began hostingreceptions for prospective students in the 1950s.

Luellen Pyles speaks with great affection aboutKentucky Wesleyan. “I walk around the campusalone today and get tearful. I think of thegenerosity of so many people, and I think of thethousands of graduates who became good citizensand made great contributions.”

Matt Ruark, a political science major, says thatas a high school student, he struggled with thechoice of a college. Pyles invited him to abanquet for prospective students, their parentsand alumni in Maysville. “It was through theinfluence of Miss Luellen that I made thedecision to attend Wesleyan,” he says.

When she is in Owensboro for meetings andcampus events, Miss Luellen takes Matt andother students to the Moonlite for dinner. Shealso checks in with Matt about once a month byphone. He laughs when he shares that their dailyschedules are a little different. “One morning shecalled me at 7:49 and woke me from a deep sleep. That was great, because I had an 8:30 class Iwould have missed. I think she had been up forhours.”

Pyles talks about Matt Ruark with a sparkle inher eye. “We’re going to hear from him; he’sgoing places,” she says with a chuckle. Matt saysof Miss Luellen, “I love her like a grandmother. She is the grandmother I never knew.”
