Presidents
MessageIt is a privilege to serve as a trustee
of Rocky Ridge Music Center and
an extraordinary privilege to serve
as president. The most rewarding
aspect of my work has been my
relationships with our faculty,
students and parents, directors
and staff, and fellow trustees.
Ours is a remarkable community
bound together by music, some as
teachers and performers andothers as supporters and contribu-
tors. Our common endeavor is to
create a setting in which young
musicians can receive musical
training of uncommon value.
Let me offer you a glimpse of my
own background and past connec-
tion to Rocky Ridge. At age
thirteen, I studied here as a piano
student, then returned home, to
Although I did not win that year
the next, I realized that I wo

Ridge produces. I came to rec

Today I do my best to remain

managed to learn a scattering
waltzes by Chopin and Brahms
Schuberts impromptus, and
Bachs works. Ever the amateu
pick out the easy ones. During
summer months, I love to retu
to Rocky Ridge to hear the
classical repertoire performed
musicians, both students a
professionals, whose talent is greater than mine.
My task now is to help to prese
this marvelous place and
promote its growth. If you
already a member of our comm
nity, I ask that you reflect on
value that Rocky Ridge creates
the lives of its students, alum
and faculty; and that you ren
your efforts to support our wo
our common endeavor.

demonstrated a new and strengthened musical
focus, as well as a desire to take on serious music - in
my case, Mozarts A-Major concerto, which I
managed to play in a symphony audition contest,
with competence if not with brilliance.

At first, I didnt think that I had any personal connection to
Rocky Ridge but I was wrong. In a series of extraordinary
coincidences, I have discovered that Rocky Ridge adult
piano faculty member Gloria Chuang and I lived in the
same house, had the same job, the same office, and knew
the same people in Decatur, Illinois some 13 years ago (I
replaced her at Millikin University). In another instant, courtesy of an applicant to the Young Artist Program, I
discovered that my classmate John McGinness (Associate
Professor in Music Theory at the Crane School of Music)
from Santa Barbara days attended Rocky Ridge. I quote in
part an email from him:
I tell these stories because it is our connection with the
place and people that create unique experiences that are
etched in our memories and inform the decisions we make
in our lives. We are also, in some way, connected to each
other should we desire to find these hidden treasures. I
invite you to join me in adding to the beautiful, ongoing
tapestry that is Rocky Ridge.

Because...well, this is a little embarrassing,
but if you go to the RRMC web page:www.rockyridge.org/photo/alumniPhoto/

in the tweed jacket is me. I was at RRMC
for three summers, 1969-70-71. (The line
up behind the two Davids playing the
pianos in the photo is me, Steven Bauer,
Lyle Rogow, Andy Nicoforous, Ed Grace,
and Bob Gregg.)Beautiful spot. I remem-
ber it fondly. I also remember that the water
we drank (at least in the first year) came
directly out of the stream to the tap.
SoYoung Lee,Music Director
It is with great optimism that I write to you this chilly spring
day as many ideas and collective dreams are beginning to
come into focus since my appointment this past fall. I
believe that Rocky Ridge Music Center (RRMC) is at an
exciting crossroads as it enters its 67th season. Organiza-
tions, like people, must evolve and adapt to the challenges
of our changing contemporary landscape and we are readyto meet them with a passionate and committed faculty,
trustees, newly formed administrative team, and an ever
expanding community of supporters composed of alumni,
friends, and donors.
Rocky Ridge has a strong musi-
cal footprint (if you would
allow me borrow a term from
the Green movement; afterall,
RRMC winter office is located
in Boulder!) with a rich history
stemming from the clear found-ing vision of Beth Harrod of
Lincoln, Nebraska. The Direc-
tors who took up the torch
subsequent to Beth deserve
special recognition and appre-
ciation, without whom Rocky
Ridge would not be celebrating
its 66th anniversary: Patrick Gaines, Elizabeth Mueller
Grace, James McWhorter, Carina Voly and Constance
Cook Glen.
The spirit of Beth Harrod and the contributions from past
directors were evermore apparent at the Music Teachers
National Association Convention held in Denver recently.
Many alumni stopped by the Rocky Ridge exhibitors booth
and it didnt take long before they were transported to their
student days the nostalgic memories of music making with
friends, the ineffable magic of the place, and the lasting
effect of Beths teachings. One alumna, Charlotte Heer-
mann, remembered the names of nearly every single class-
mate pictured in the scrapbook we put together from
photos dating back to 1946!

From the JSS Program Director
Claudia Anderson,JSS Program Director
In the spring of 1998, Junior Student Seminar Director
Barabara Lien - music department accompanist and my
colleague at Grinnell College invited me to her house and
began talking about a summer music camp called Rocky
Ridge. "The pay is terrible, the living conditions are primitive,
and you'll be working pretty much all the time. But I think
you would be terrific with the kids; why don't you give it a try?"
Barb had neglected to mention that in June the above-
ground pipes could freeze and the sewer "system" could
back up, creating a perfect survivalist combo with the
copious rain and snow that
greeted me that first summer.
For Barb, I gave it a try and
stuck it out. The JSS sessions
moved to July after that soggy
season, and ten years later I find
myself wondering both how I
endured the first summer andhow I could now imgaine life
without Rocky Ridge? Those of
us who are alumni - as students,
staff, or faculty - know the
answers. Those who have not
yet experienced the challenges
and the magic that together
make RRMC unique among summer music camps - well,
they are the lucky ones to look forward to that "first time"
that will hopefully stretch out into many more.
During my ten summers, I have worked with marvelous
faculty and Program Directors who inspired me with their
commitment and persistence in finding ways to make our
programs more successful. Now it seems to be my turn. As
the first JSS Director who is a wind player, I am looking at
areas in the program that can improve the daily schedule for
each group of musicians - winds, strings, piano, and voice.
Returning students will notice a few changes that should
offer them more helpful structure and direction in their
classes and practice times. The overall schedule remains
intact, however, and we look forward to a truly exciting
summer in 2008 of new ideas, new friends and old, lots andlots of music and mountains, and the rewards of carrying the
mission of Rocky Ridge into the next generation.

with names and numbers on them-but they are much more
than that. Each application represents a person hoping to
be acceptedaccepted into Rocky Ridges 2008 seminars,
accepted by a new teacher and into a new circle of friends,
accepted to perform for peers, accepted for who they are as
well as what they can become, some preparing to be
accepted to college, some into the world of professionalmusicians.
Even now as the office is accessible only with the assistance
of snowshoes, I look forward to the first day of camp to
finally connect real faces to the names with which I have
become so familiar. I hope to help welcome and accept
each student, staff member and teacher as they prepare to
work, learn and live at Rocky Ridge, and perhaps just as
importantly, to share with them my mountains.
It would be difficult to live in Estes Park and not know about
Rocky Ridge Music Center. Even non-musical residents
here feel a connection to RRMCs rich cultural heritage in
some way, perhaps through the history of the Hewes-
Kirkwood Inn, summertime concerts in the mountains, or
taking the wrong path back after climbing Longs Peak! In my
childhood I claimed the mountains here as my own, and as aclassical musician I cant think of a better place to learn.
It is with this spirit that I have
entered into my new position as
RRMC Office Manager,
engaged in receiving applications
from prospective students.
Currently we have students regis-
tered from Japan, Mexico, Thai-
land, Canada, France, Germany,
Korea, Brazil and 23 United
States. Overall we have
processed over 150 applications
since December, and each one
that I receive is as exciting to me
as the first. It would be easy to
think of them as a pile of papers

Development
I remember Rocky Ridge as a parent. My daughterHeather, was preparing for her first trip away from home. She was signed up for the Junior Seminar in 2003 and wasa little reluctant to be away from home. The camaraderieimmediately took hold. The empowerment gained fromthe involvement in the program brought her great joy. Sheasked to stay on for the second session and the followingyear returned bringing three classmates from her middleschool.Coming back to this beautiful place as development direc-tor brings back all those memories of her joy and my happi-ness to see her flourish.
The schedule for this season isquickly unfolding. Rocky Ridge
hosted its first fundraising eventof the season featuring The
Tamburitzans of DuquesneUniversity at the Historic Boul-
der Theater. This is a group ofuniversity students who comefrom all four corners of the U.S.
and from abroad. Theyperformed in a kaleidoscope of
over 400 handmade costumeswith age old instruments, blend-
ing their charming voices andacrobatic folk dances. The Tam-
buritzans left our audience feeling like they had witnessed
the best Eastern European village entertainment ever. TheQueen City Jazz Band will provide the entertainment at ourJune fundraiser for the golfers in our community; we are
beginning to talk to Estes Park Golf Course about a mid-summer golf tourney and fundraiser.
