THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

The first Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of the church’s annual cycle of worship. It inaugurates a four-week season alive with hope and expectation. It focuses on the coming of the Lord — firstly on the final return of Christ at the end of time, then increasingly on the long-awaited birth of the Messiah, and all the while on the coming of Christ into our daily lives. As the season progresses, the challenging images of the end times yield to those of fruitfulness, healing and promise. It is a season of encouragement and invitation.

THANK YOU We again express our gratitude to Mark, the principal, and Michele, from Holy Rosary School for the colour printing of our weekly newsletter.

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony bewildered by the clamour of the ocean and its waves; men dying of fear as they await what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.’ ‘Watch ourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down on every living man on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.’

SPECIAL FEAST DAY December 8:

THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

This Feast had its origin in the East as the ‘Conception of Mary by Saint Anne’. It spread through the West during the Middle Ages as the ‘Immaculate Conception’ and was extended to the entire Western Church in the eighteenth century. The feast celebrates Mary, preserved from sin from the moment of conception; she is the first fruits of her Son’s redemption and a prophetic model of what the Church is called to be.

PROCLAIMERS OF THE WORD This ministry is properly called the ministry of Proclaimers of the Word, because the Word of God is not meant to be simply read, but to be proclaimed as living word of life. For this reason this ministry is not to be called the ministry of readers.

Scripture itself tells us that God’s word is “living and active.” His Word is not primarily a written text that is fixed and codified, but a Word spoken and proclaimed in the midst of a community of faith.

Rosary Community Centre Presents . . . .

Our Lady of the Rosary Foundation hosted the third and final talk in the ‘Rosary Community Centre Presents …..’ series on Wednesday 21 November. Beck, an Investigator Advocate from the Office of the Public Advocate, explained some ways to “Prepare for the Future”, particularly the use of documents such as Power of Attorney, Power of Guardianship and Advance Health Directive. In addition to the talk, the group of 46 people shared morning tea and some lively conversations. There are additional copies of the information pack available for collection from the Parish office for anyone who may be interested.

The Foundation Directors would like to thank all have contributed to the success of this inaugural series of presentations, including the bakeries that donated sausage rolls and other delicious treats for morning tea and the willing helpers who set up/ packed up the room and prepared and served morning tea each time. PARISH AGM HIGHLIGHTS SUCCESSFUL YEAR

Forty parishioners including members of the Pastoral Council and Finance Committee participated in the Annual General Meeting of the Parish on Sunday 25 November in the Rosary Community Centre. The meeting was presented with reports by the parish priest, Fr Peter, the parish pastoral associate, Kaye Shervington, the co-chair of the council, Richard Goodwin, and the chairman of the finance committee, John Mordini. Each reported considerable achievements and progress throughout 2018, marked by the opening of our new parish building complex and the additional level of community engagement that had followed. The parish remains in a sound financial position albeit with new loan commitments to honour over the coming decades. The AGM also recognised the tireless work of scores of volunteers throughout the parish individually and in numerous dedicated groups. As well, the meeting allowed feedback and suggestions from parishioners on items of interest.
