MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALDear Sprague Students and Parents,It is hard to believe that it is already May. Students have forecasted for their classes for next year, our spring sports teams are finishing their seasons and many of our performing arts programs are preparing for their state and end of the year performances. Everyone is busy trying to finish the year strong. The hustle and bustle of spring is here.It gives me great pleasure to inform you that we are doing great work in the classroom. Our preliminary test scores are fantastic. Because of great focus of our staff and students, as of the end of last week, 92 percent of our Juniors have met or exceeded the state benchmark in Reading, 81 percent in Writing, 78 percent in Math and Science. These are great accomplishments for the Sprague Staff and Students. As we finish strong, we hope to see these great numbers improve.I would like to thank our students, staff, and parents for partnering to make the 2010-2011 school year a positive one. Respectfully,

Curtiss J. Scholl , Principal, Sprague High School

Honor Society InductionsThe Honor Society Induction Dessert was held Monday April 25th in the library. Congratulations go out to the newly inducted members of Sprague’s Chapter National Honor Society. These students have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 as well as taking challenging coursework with a required number of courses from the OSAA or OUS approved list. Each junior is responsible for performing 40 hours of community service before next year’s graduation.

Construction Bond Work This SummerThis summer, construction projects funded by the 2008, $242.1 million construction bond will continue at many schools in our district, including Sprague High School. Numerous schools will receive repairs ranging from roof replacements to new tile floors and everything in between.

The projects planned for Sprague this summer are improvements to the HVAC system and electrical work. The construction period may cause some inconvenience, but the improvement is certainly worthwhile. There could be some disruptions to activities at our school while construction is in progress, however our office will remain open. Eleven other schools in the district will undergo extensive work and will be closed for the summer to accommodate repairs.

In November 2008, Salem and Keizer citizens supported a $242.1 million construction bond to provide repairs, renovations and new school construction to address facility maintenance needs, overcrowding and population growth. Bond funds are dedicated funds and can only be used for projects associated with the 2008 bond measure. Bond funds cannot be used for school operations.

Thanks to the community’s support of the bond, schools will provide a safer, healthier and less crowded learning environment for students. Bond construction also provides an important investment in our community by providing employment through construction. For more information about planned projects or the bond, please visit the district website at www.salemkeizer.org/content/bond-updates.

Sprague Olyanne Dance Team Completes Successful SeasonThe Sprague Olyanne Dance Team completed a successful fall season on December 11 by qualifying two routines for the fall state championships. In addition, five dancers qualified for the individual drill down competition at the championships.

During the fall season, the Olyannes competed 11 times in four dance styles (jazz, lyrical, hip hop and novelty) and placed in the top three in their division 6 times. Performances were also presented at school assemblies and football halftimes.

The Olyannes kicked off their winter season by hosting a competition for dance teams from middle and elementary school teams on January 15. Over 500 spectators were in attendance. On February 26, the Olyannes hosted a high school competition for 14 dance teams from around the state. The Olyannes performed exhibitions at this competition with the Sprague boys team, the Olyandys, and with their dads for the traditional Dad-Daughter dance.

The Olyannes competed at three competitions during the winter dance season earning first place honors twice. During this time, the team achieved qualifying scores for the final round at the OSAA State Dance Championships. Additional performances at basketball halftimes kept the team busy.

The Olyannes performed at the Trailblazer basketball game in the Rose Garden on March 15 and competed in the 6A small division of the State Dance Championships on March 16 and 17 at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Senior Brianne Reyna was one of only 15 dancers selected for All State honors at the championships. The conclusion of the state competition marked an exciting finale for the 2010-11 dance team season.

The team is coached by Vernita Reyna. For more information including audition details for the 2011-12 team, visit the team web page that can be accessed through the Sprague High School website (select Dance Team under the Athletic Home section).

Little Olys PreschoolBy Olivia ZuercherDo you know who the youngest Olympians at Sprague High School are? They are the 3, 4 and 5 year old children who attend Little Olys Preschool two days a week! For high school students interested in teaching, counseling, psychology or any profession working with children and families, Teaching Young Children is the perfect class!

During these last two years in the Little Olys Preschool, I have been able to work with children while learning about child development. My involvement with the Teaching Young Children class has prepared me for a future career in education. We cover a wide range of topics, while exploring different themes and activities that allow children and high schoolers to learn together. There are four classes students may take which include Developing Child and Teaching Young Children I-III. These classes begin with learning about the development of infants and eventually can lead to internships, portfolios, and even jobs. Erika Wright, a junior and head teacher at Little Olys Preschool, now works at Bud to Blossom due to her time with the preschool program. The experiences I have gained have given me not only the training for working with children, but also helpful skills such as curriculum planning. The memories from Little Olys Preschool are highly beneficial and everlasting!

My Internship at Schirle Elementary School by Jillana KuceyThis year I got the opportunity to intern with my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Mollerstuen. Although I really enjoyed the preschool program, I wanted some experience with different ages of children. My main task has been one on one with a student who has trouble reading. I have seen a lot of improvement in just a short time! I have also planned activities for their Oregon Trail unit and prepared a bulletin board. It really shows the teaching environment and other jobs in the school.

Addison and Paige enjoy expressing their creativity!

Jillana Kucey leads a science experiment with the children.

SENIOR SCOOPPRANKS/SENIOR BEHAVIOR: NO AUTHORIZED SENIOR SKIP DAYS!The Salem-Keizer School District permits seniors to graduate early (June 10) while other students continue through June 15. Because of this, there are no authorized senior skip days! It is also important to remember that violations of school rules, including pranks, may result in a student not being able to participate in the graduation ceremony. The joy of graduation could be lost if a student chooses to engage in inappropriate behavior.

Seniors will participate in awareness discussions designed to prevent anyone from losing his/her privilege to graduate and participate in the special final activities. Our desire is to make certain every senior in the Sprague family enjoys a wonderful and memorable graduation.

Any student engaged in a senior prank that damages property, degrades the reputation of an individual and/or Sprague High School will be criminally charged and will not be allowed to walk with their class in the graduation ceremonies. This includes “BOOYAH” hill.

STUDENTS UNDER THE INFLUENCEAny senior participating in graduation activities found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs which includes the prom, senior banquet, graduation practice and the graduation ceremony will forfeit participation in any remaining activities and will be criminally charged and subject to District discipline and procedures. All students are expected to conduct themselves with pride and celebrate the occasion appropriately.

SENIOR FINALSSenior finals are June 7th and 8th during regularly scheduled class times. Most teachers of seniors will be giving a final exam in their classes.

Request your final transcript be sent to the college you will be attending.

CONTINUING ON TO COLLEGE? ATTENDANCE STILL COUNTS!!In recent years, some seniors were given “academic probation” beginning their freshman year in college due to poor attendance and grades as indicated by their final semester grades. Please make sure to continue attending your classes on time.

College to do’s: ➤ Sign and return financial award

letters. ➤ Apply for a dorm; check out all

the options available to you – there are a lot!

➤ Report college attending and scholarship information to the CRIC.

Reality check: You are now an adult and are graduating! And will be entering the job market…What do you want? A job with decent pay? Health care benefits? 401K-plan? The reality is college or some other specialized training is what usually gives you this. Another reality is that college is becoming the new job minimum requirement. The statistics are, those with a college degree make more and have a lower rate of unemployment. College pays. A national study found that people with a 4-year degree earn over $1 million more over their lifetime than those who choose not to go to college. Can you afford that? Think college now.

It’s not too late: ➤ To consider what you want to do

for a career. Use CIS to give you career ideas. A “personality career test” is found under Exploration under Occupation Sort on the home page. This will give you a list of careers that you may enjoy based on the information you give about yourself. From here you can link your career ideas to specific colleges or other types of training. You can access CIS through any computer with internet access or you can use a computer in the CRIC or library.

➤ To consider college, technical school, trade school, vocational school. Use CIS to link your career ideas to college, or other types of training. Remember Chemeketa offers career training too. Remember the CRIC and counselors are here to help you…Don’t settle for less! Education and training are essential to a good paying job with benefits.

➤ To apply for scholarships! Many small universities are still offering scholarships. CIS has a great scholarship search engine under Exploration under Financial Aid Sort on the home page. Community college is always an affordable and practical way to start

your four year degree.

Oly Pageant Recap This year’s Oly Pageant Coordinators and Contestants hosted a night filled with laughter, tears, and giving. We want to thank the wonderful Salem community, parents, family, friends, staff, and fellow students for coming out and making this

such a great event. We are confident Jordan Giza’s synchronized swimming talent will not be soon forgotten. Sarah Kleinman’s stand-up comedy act still manages to keep some of us laughing. If you were like me, I was singing Bridget Caldwell’s “Taylor the Latte Boy” weeks after the performance. All of our talents were great, but ultimately we had to crown two winners. Grant Lemons and Theresa Carey were this year’s 2010-2011 Mr. and Ms. Olympian! All thirteen students worked hard to raise close to $25,000 that will directly benefit Doernbecher’s Children Hospital. We wanted to give a special thanks to Mrs. Sarah Bucholz, math teacher, for advising our students through this wonderful event. Additionally, this event would not have happened without our student coordinators- Alyssa Eckdahl and Tori Simenic. Finally, we left the night in tears when we watched Jilynne Vettrus cut off her locks for Locks of Love. Thank you also to our contestants: Jordan Giza, Anthony Martinez, Brad Dillingham, Miles Wilson, Bryce Williams, Grant Lemons, Bridget Caldwell, Theresa Carey, Jillyne Vettrus, Hannah Walton, and Sarah Kleinman.
