Spotted a Platypus Lately?
Google, Scientists Developed New
App to Save Them
Over the last 6 years, FreedomApps' programming team have developed over 130 awesome apps for clients in over 13 countries.
They’ve spent nearly 250,000 man hours in front of their keyboards programming new app ideas.
We know our stuff!
And we’re constantly on the cutting edge of which apps are hot and which are not. Even more important we’re watching trends over the next 3 years to see what the next big winners are likely to be.
We have two offices both in Sydney and abroad. In Sydney we’re situated amongst the leafy streets and cafes of trendy Victoria St, Darlinghurst.
Scientists have joined forces with tech giant Google to build an app that allows Australians to gather information about one of the most unique and elusive animals, the platypus.
Can we save them?Wildlife ecologist Josh Griffiths came up with
the idea of the platypusSPOT app.
With just a few taps, anyone who spots a platypus in the wild can submit a photo and their observations to an online database.

This information will be used by the University of New South Wales to conduct the first national survey of Australia's platypus population, help assess the status of platypuses and develop appropriate conservation strategies.
"We're calling on all members of the public to become citizen scientists and contribute their information about where platypus live, and where they may be disappearing.”

Threatened Species?
Scientists say urban sprawl and climate change are big threats to the platypus because of the impact that it will have on waterflows.
However, with apps like this we can give everyday people an opportunity to get involved in real conservation science work, make a genuine contribution to the body of knowledge, to science, on our beautiful Australian species.
Fun Facts:
▧ Platypuses or platypi? According to the team at platypusSPOT, the correct plural term is platypuses.
▧ A platypus is one of the only two egg-laying mammals in the world.
▧ Platypus hunt for food 12 hours a day and has 40,000 electroreceptors on its bill to find food.
