FROM THE SUPERINTENDENTS OFFICE
Dear DAA Families, I would like to start my message this week with a sincere thank-you to the many parents who attended conferences, concerts, and other special events in the last few weeks, as well as to those dedicated DAAPA volunteers who have transformed our PS/ES atrium into a winter wonderland and to those who have contributed in so many other ways around the school. There are just so many ways our parents contribute to making DAA the school that it is. We do our best to engage parents in the learning process at DAA, and we appreciate your willingness to support your children. The home-school partnership is a critical one, to be sure. There is a mountain of research that indicates the most accurate predictor of a student’s achievement in school is not income or social status, but the extent to which a student’s family fosters a home environment that emphasizes learning, expresses high (but appropriate) expectations, and actively engages in their children’s education and in the community. I am more convinced than ever that our home-school partnership is why DAA is the school it is. Matthew Wilding, DAA’s Deputy Superintendent, has a motto that I like very much: “Parents send us the best children that they have.” From my perspective, I believe teachers are obliged to see the promise of your children, which requires that we know your sons and daughters well as individuals. DAA needs to be a safe, child-centered place where teachers are idealistic about the potential of every student and tenacious in their support for a child as she learns, takes risks, makes mistakes, and grows. As we all know, most human beings normalize their behaviour. My hope is that DAA continues to understand this and that we consistently work to build an ethos in which the pursuit of excellence and intolerance for mediocrity is normal—for students, parents, and teachers. That ethos takes effort, commitment, and passion, and absolutely requires a positive, healthy home-school partnership. Again, thank you. Also regarding the theme of home-and-school, thank you to those parents who signed the Parent-School Contract in the last few weeks. We tried to make this obligation as convenient as possible for you by arranging stations in the PS/ES and the MS/HS. I think most of you will realize that this new contract wasn’t one we cooked up impulsively at DAA, but is, rather, a new requirement from KHDA that all schools in Dubai must orchestrate with their families. To be sure, I appreciate your forbearance and cooperation. For those of you who have not signed the contract, I’m afraid this is a requirement that will not fade away if you ignore it long enough! Indeed, I’m quite sure there will come a point when I am directed by KHDA to de-enrol students whose parents have not signed the contract, which is something I do not want to do. There will be separate communications regarding dates and times where we will again be setting up convenient locations where parents can sign their Parent-School Contracts. Please watch for a message from Matthew Wilding, DAA’s Deputy Superintendent, who has been coordinating this oblitation. You will notice that we are finally making progress on improvements to DAA’s campus. As most of you will be aware, we are currently in the process of replacing DAA’s synthetic football pitch. The quality of the pitch being installed is a significant upgrade from our former one, and I’m looking forward to watching our teams and students play on the new field in January. We are also making progress on our plans to improve DAA’s security by installing RFID access control, both for vehicles and for people. If you’ve stopped by the school on a weekend recently, you’re aware that work often being done around our entrances as we prepare for our new systems. For those of you who were part of DAA’s community last year, please know that we have never forgotten our pledge to improve the school’s security systems. Efforts to increase compliance with decals and badges were important, but those were shorter-term measures. Bear with me, and I think you’ll see our plan finally coming together over the coming months. I apologized last week for the “survey-fatigue” that I know you often endure. The challenge is that DAA want its own survey data, which tends to focus on the specifics of our programs and operations, but GEMS also wants to collect its own surveys, often on similar concerns. This is the case now, as GEMS has created a Services Survey, which I encourage you to access at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GEMS05services. And there’s one more survey I need to introduce this week, which follows below.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENTS OFFICE, continued DAA received its inspection notice from KHDA on Sunday, indicating that our annual DSIB inspection will occur January 11 through 14. What pleases me a great deal is that the next few weeks will be business as usual at DAA. School leaders and teachers take a healthy bring-it-on attitude about our inspection. I hear stories about other schools in Dubai that stage elaborate productions during their inspections – Potemkin villages, if you will. I don’t necessarily fault these schools because the pressure of these high-stakes inspections is great. However, what I would like parents to know is that I take great pride in being part of DAA’s faculty because we don’t ask our teachers to fake anything during the inspection. We also do our best to keep the stress and pressure of the inspection away from your children. That’s important, I think. And so here’s the latest survey I need to ask you to complete, this time from KHDA: https://www.khda.gov.ae/Parents. (Please note when you’re looking for DAA in the drop-down menu that we are listed as GEMS Dubai American Academy.) This survey is an important piece of DAA’s inspection. I would greatly appreciate if you would spare a few minutes to take the survey. This will be our final full SPOTS message until January, so I wish you all a pleasant and restful winter break. Thank you for your continued support for DAA and its teachers. As I wrote in the opening paragraphs of this message, your support is important to us and I appreciate your choice to be part of DAA’s community! Kind Regards, Jim Hardin Superintendent

Dear High school parents,
It has been quite busy three months!!!
Looking back at the calendar, we started off in September with our very enthusiastic and well attended kick off lunch, the Pink Day which was a big success this year, a coffee morning grade 11 parents had, then the grade 9, 10 and grade 11 individual informative coffee mornings with different and very enlightening speakers regarding the university admissions, a coffee morning grade 10 parents had, the Bunko night, a movie morning, our apple pie marathon to support the High School Thanksgiving Lunch , the grade 11 informative coffee morning regarding the CAS hour program, the monthly Senior appreciation breakfast that the grade 12 moms are organizing with so much affection and of course our annual Christmas lunch with an incredible turnout, a lot of fun and stealing of the gifts…..
All these have been accomplished with your support and enthusiasm. We would like to thank you at this point for joining us, we hope you have met some new parents and enjoyed the activities.
Please sign up at [email protected] mentioning your child’s grade to stay informed.

FROM THE PS PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear PS Parents, The primary staff and I would like to wish you and your family the very best of holidays. While celebrations or traditions may vary from family to family, what is commonly shared is the focus on the importance of family, love, and acts of kindness. Our wish for you is that when things get very, very busy, that you find that moment to slow down and savor the moment you are in. When with family and friends, that you relish your good fortune to be surrounded by the ones you love and those who love you. Happy holidays! Swimming: Due to the onset of cooler weather, there will be no swimming effective this Sunday, Dec 13th until the weather warms up again. You will be notified when swimming will resume. Instead of swimming, students will be taught health lessons. Please note students will wear their PE uniforms on these days. A sincere thank you to the many homeroom parents who have volunteered to help out in classrooms. Our primary hallways are artistic displays featuring both student work and holiday themes. The classroom doors which are decorated monthly are absolutely adorable. The creativity and attention to detail is impressive! Parent Coffee Reminder - Our next parent coffee morning will be on Tuesday, Dec 14th. Our guest presenter will be Dr. Saliha, whose topic will be “Character Matters”. Character Matters will go over the 10 essential values that are the anchor of a healthy and happy family system. Participants will learn how families of character practice their virtues. Participants will also learn practical ways they can encourage building character in their children (and themselves). We hope you can join us! Thank you, DAAPA!: On behalf of the more than 2,000 users of our ES/PS Library, we would like to thank DAAPA for generously supporting our newly remodeled library space by buying us five new Fatboy beanbags. They are getting much use as a comfortable, colorful spot to read or work. THANK YOU, DAAPA!

MIDDLE SCHOOL MESSAGES (Grades 6-8) Make sure to read the corresponding DAAPA NEWS section of this issue of SPOTS for all the latest Middle School parent sponsored events! FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL OFFICE
UAE Day Celebrations We had an amazing day of celebrations as we invited the littlest members of our DAA community over and paired our MS student with them to go through activities. They all worked so well together. We also had MS parents come out and draw henna and face paint, take pictures of all the amazing outfits and serve a local treat for our MS students. Thank you to all for your part in making this a fantastic event!
Support Staff Gift Bags We want to thank all students who brought in items to donate to our Gift Bag for our DAA Support Staff. Monday will be a special time when we are given the chance to hand over these bags to the very special people who ensure this campus is working efficiently! ‘Tis the Season We want to sincerely thank those MS parents that came into our school last Monday and set ups numerous trees and decorated our commons and hallways…you added a great festive feel that the teachers and students love! Festive Dress Day As is tradition in the middle school, we are asking students to dress in Festive Outfits (you can wear those reindeer antlers for the day) or Seasonal Colors (green and red) on Wednesday, December 16th. Please ensure the outfits follow school dress code rules. (NO shorts, shoulders need to be covered, skirts to the knee and closed toed shoes) MOGA (most outrageous games and activities) We are looking forward to another half-day tradition on Thursday, December 17th. We will start off the morning with an action packed assembly for the students and then move to our sporting facilities for some ‘outrageous’ fun and games. Students should wear their color house shirts with PE shorts and running shoes so they are ready to participate in all the activities. They should also bring a refillable water bottle with their name clearly labeled on it and a snack for our mid-morning break. Dismissal will be at noon on this day. Whether you are traveling or relaxing in Dubai over the break, we wish you a safe and happy holiday! Warmest Regards, Joan Wiens and Luke Spencer MS Admin

FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL OFFICE
What just happened……
• Developing leadership through Physical Education Recently our grade 9 students participated in a physical education unit titled ‘Developing leadership through recreational games’. The objective of this unit was for students to develop interpersonal skills such as organization, leadership, teamwork, and cooperation by leading their peers through a creative warm-up activity and recreational game.
During this unit, students were provided the opportunity to create new ideas for engaging young teens in a safe, active and enjoyable session that reflected
their own personal interests and improved fitness. Not only did these students build confidence through leading others but they also developed an understanding of how to maintain an active lifestyle through their participation in regular physical activities that they enjoy, which is key to preparing our students to leading healthy and successful lives.
Photos are two grade 9 students, Sarah Madani and Isabel Rostock leading their class through a warm-up activity.
• SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES IN DUBAI The CAS Coordinator continues to find new service opportunities for our students. It has been a great challenge to find service opportunities in the UAE that do not violate the regulations set up by the Department of Islamic Affairs & Charitable Activities Department. If you have any suggestions on getting our students involved with service. Please contact me at [email protected] RECORDING CAS & SERVICE All students are required to take part in CAS and/or Service. Students are REQUIRED to record all information in Managebac, which is our CAS Database program. At the end of each semester, parents will be notified of their child's progress in CAS by a notification on their report card, or by e-mail. It is important that they keep up to date on all their activities. SPOTLIGHT I attempt to spotlight our students' efforts in CAS as much as I can. I would like to recognize the efforts of Down The Line Winners. They have successfully initiated a great program to help others. If you wish to learn more, go their website: (downthelinewinners.com) I would also like to recognize a group of students supervised by Ms. Ritchie that put on a Recycled Fashion Show. Photos of their first show can be found on the CAS website. WEBSITE This is just a reminder that if you want to keep up-to-date with CAS events, requirements & updates make sure you go to tschumperlin.net

• Future brain surgeons in the making!
This month the High School Biology class challenged themselves with their first dissection of the year. Following a v isual presentation, the class was able to overcome squeamish nerves and discovered some of the beautiful structures within the brain. Students like Ahmad Bin Haider and Joey Lim highlighted an almost artistry in their care and precision during their dissections.
• You never know what you will see in Deira! I B Visual Arts Students enjoyed a photography field trip down to Bur Dubai visiting Deira fish market and a variety of traditional Souks through to Bastakia quarter, including a boat rip on the river.
We continued the trip at Dubai mall, where students then made a comparison on how life is lived is different parts of Dubai. This trip will go onto inform a digital Art montage, with the students focusing their work on an area of their choice from the trip.
They are l ooking forward to showing the final products.
• Reduce, reuse,
recycle is all the fashion!
Last Sunday a group of seniors ran an advisory activity with the junior class making outfits
from the paper found in our classroom recycling bins. This shows just one of the many things we can do with recycled materials instead of throwing them away ! What’s going to happen……..?

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER
The DAA community had the opportunity to meet and listen to a real Olympian! Butch Reynolds was here to speak with our athletes, and share his Olympic and World Championship experience. Competing in the World Championships, Butch earned the World Record in the 400 m sprint in Track and Field, for 11 years from 1988 to 1999. His time of 43.29 seconds beat the previous record by 0.57 seconds, and is still the second fastest 400m time ever. He was also a member of the 4 x 400m relay team, who still holds the current World Record. Butch was a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team and earned gold and silver medals in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea.
Butch is here in Dubai to present some Speed and Agility Training workshops. You can learn more about this at trsports.com. Our DAA students asked some serious questions about training and sport, and many were excited to get autographs after the presentation!
