Endless Summer… The Journey ContinuesMore than 150 people gathered at The Arc of San Diego’s Annual Meeting & Installation Ceremony on June 15th to celebrate successes and plan for the year ahead.The event, held at the Hilton San Diego Resort Mission Bay, focused on installing the 2012-13 slate of incoming officers and board members and honoring the achievements of The Arc’s staff, volunteers, and consumers.Errol G. Person, Member-At-Large of City Chapter Advisory Board and Doug Hoehn, Past Board Chair of The Arc of San Diego Board of Directors received the coveted Frank B. Lalor Award. Both men have made tremendous contributions to The Arc. With the arrival of summer, The Arc of San Diego would like to wish our supporters a wonderful and fun summertime. While many of us are fortunate to go on vacations and spend quality time with friends and family, these months also serve as a reminder that many of our consumers do not have the resources for recreational activities.As you get ready for some summer fun, would you please consider sponsoring a child or adult with a disability to enjoy a week away at our Camp-A-Little/Camp-A-Lot program or with the opportunity to get to a sporting event or see a movie? It is private donations such as yours that continue to afford people with disabilities the recreational and leisure activities they so need.On June 27th, Governor Brown signed California’s $93 billion State Budget effective July 1, 2012. In this budget, the 4.25% rate cut was allowed to sunset as called for in last year’s budget. However, a new 1.25% rate cut was enacted to help address California’s substantial budget deficit. The net change equals a 3% restoration of the prior cut, but more reductions are being threatened if the Governor’s Tax Initiative is not passed by voters in November. I will keep you informed of changes that may occur.As always, thank you for your valued support and, from all of us at The Arc of San Diego, have a safe and happy summer!

Remembrance…Jennifer ClarkMarch 3, 1949 - March 20, 2012Jennifer, daughter of Bennie and late Dollie Clark, was the inspiration behind the founding of The Arc of San Diego more than 60 years ago. Diane Stice of

the Ocean Beach Junior Woman’s Club met Jennifer’s mother when the two shared a room in the maternity ward at a local hospital. There Diane learned that Dolly’s first daughter, Jennifer, had Down syndrome. With no services in San Diego for children with special needs, Jennifer became the catalyst for Ben, Dolly, and Diane to organize the San Diego Society for Exceptional Children in 1951, which later became The Arc of San Diego.Jennifer was known for her gentle nature, love of ping pong, and precise neatness. She spent the majority of her life in San Diego where she worked at the Starlight Center Production Center, later transitioning to the Seniors Program. The Arc of San Diego is proud to have provided Jennifer, our trailblazer, with the services to live a meaningful and fulfilling life.“Jennifer lived a very full life and was always a source of inspiration to us,” said caregivers, Amor and Ernesto Aguinaldo. Jennifer is survived by father Bennie, brother Stephen, and two sisters, Brenda (Clark) Becker and Peggy (Clark) Porter, as well as 11 nieces and nephews, and 11 great-nieces and nephews.

Arc Foundation 2012 Annual MeetingThe 2012 Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon for the Arc San Diego Foundation was held at the Island Prime Restaurant on June 20th. Anthony Paul was young and we were frantically searching for answers.”Born in 1958, their son Anthony Paul Ghio attended North Shores Vocational Center and lived in Arc’s Davies and Fortuna Homes from 1989 until his death in 2010.The Ghio family has been exceedingly generous to The Arc of San Diego. Mr. Ghio graciously included The Arc in an estate gift, leaving a legacy that will make a meaningful difference to consumers in our programs by allowing them to fulfill personal goals and reach their individual potential.A major contribution to our Building Toward Self-Sufficiency Capital Campaign, led to naming the Program Conference Room at Sulpizio Family Center in their honor. Additionally, Mr. Ghio established a charitable gift annuity to benefit The Arc of San Diego.In San Diego, Anthony A. The Arc Salutes Broadway!The Arc of San Diego won the $500 Wild Card prize at the 19th Annual Gold (Gifts of Loving Donors) Diggers’ Hats Off to San Diego luncheon on May 3rd.With the theme, “Salute to Broadway,” The Arc was one of 11 nonprofits invited to design and model hats in the Betty Mabee Parade of Hats.The Arc of San Diego’s large elaborate hat made by Marilyn & Michael Foster featured a motorized Moulin Rouge windmill dripping in rhinestones and adorned with more than a dozen fresh black magic roses. A showstopper, the Moulin Rouge headpiece was modeled by LA-based model Rosie Tisch. Special thanks to Phyllis Parrish and the Fosters for their time and support.The Gold Diggers, since its founding in 1993, have given more than $400,000 in grants to local causes, helping those with special needs, including children, the elderly, crime victims, and others.

Mr. Ghio has a long history of community service and philanthropy. All of us at The Arc thank him for his support.

T he Arc of San Diego’s 3rd annual gala, The Jewels of San Diego-

Moulin Rouge Cabaret Extravaganza, was très magnifique affair!Chaired by Phyllis & John Parrish, the gala featured a 15- scene cabaret produced by Mr. Showbiz himself, Leonard Simpson. Close to 300 guests were captivated by the Moulin Rouge-themed show, complete with dozens of couture costume changes and professional dancers choreographed by celebrity choreographer Mary Murphy of Fox’s hit TV show So You Think You Can Dance.The spectacular evening held at The Grand Del Mar-San Diego’s only Five Star resort, kicked off with a cocktail reception, silent auction, and vendor boutiques for attendees to enjoy. The reception was followed by a gourmet dinner of savory beef tenderloin on a bed of faro risotto with wild mushrooms, topped off with flaming Baked Alaska for dessert. Thank you to Papa Doug Manchester for donating the wine enjoyed by all throughout the evening. An enthusiastic live auction boasted high-ticket items such as a trip for two to the Northern California Wine County, and Cheerleader for the Day with the San Diego Chargers–fetching vitals funds to benefit The Arc of San Diego.Honorary Jewels Chairs, Phyllis & John Parrish, are long-time supporters of The Arc of San Diego and have dedicated an extensive amount of time, talent, and love to The Arc over the years. Achieving ExcellenceArc Community Employment Services (ACES) received, for the second consecutive year, the NISH Certificate of Achievement for its AbilityOne programs. The recognition symbolizes outstanding standards of performance in providing services for the federal government.ACES began its tremendously successful partnership with the military in 1997, performing grounds maintenance and landscaping services at both, Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar and Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD.) In 2002, we added a food services operation at MCRD. These contracts have resulted in jobs and training for over 250 persons with disabilities.NISH is a national nonprofit agency whose mission is to create employment opportunities for people with significant disabilities by securing federal contracts through the AbilityOne Program.

Verna Jean ChapmanMarch 12, 1923 - June 5, 2012Verna Jean Chapman was a dedicated advocate for people with disabilities and devoted mother to daughter Jennifer

who attended Starlight Center from 1976-95. Verna served as member of the South Bay Advisory Board and volunteered as crafter for the Starlight Auxiliary. She was famous for making her 50 pounds of fudge to sell at the annual Christmas Bazaar.Verna’s impressive accolades include starting the first deaf program for pre-school and elementary school children in the Chula Vista Elementary School District as well as a 41-year career in teaching and speech therapy. She will be fondly remembered by her family and many friends.Verna is survived by her daughters, Merle Anne and Jennifer, son-in-law, Tom, granddaughter, Courtney, and niece, Anne Crawford.

Kimberly Lainhart February 27, 1976 - May 4, 2012Kim was a friendly woman who enjoyed shopping, sodas, string cheese, stickers and animals. Her favorite person in

the whole world was Michael Jackson!Kim attended El Cajon Valley High School, Grossmont Work Training Center, and Unyeway, before coming to East County Training Center in July 2004. She loved hanging out with friends and staff. Kim is from San Diego and leaves behind her mother and two brothers.

Patricia RogersJuly 12, 1955 - February 27, 2012Born in Riverside, Patty came to live at The Arc’s Turley Home after her discharge from Stockton Developmental

Center in 1994. An upbeat lady with a happy, outgoing personality, Patty loved everyone she met. She successfully battled Prader-Willi syndrome, losing more than 100 pounds. Proud of her achievement, Patty made daily exercise and healthy eating a regular part of her life. She enjoyed traveling and, through Arc’s Personal & Leisure Services, went to Disneyland and eagerly planned new trips. Patty will be remembered as a kind and considerate woman who greatly loved visiting office supply stores and purchasing supplies!

Remembrance…

On April 25th, employees from Cox Communications put on their gardening gloves to help transplant a rose garden for Arc North County.Fifteen generous volunteers potted and moved plants from the Memorial Garden, formerly located at Arc North County’s Vista location, to the Center’s new home in San Marcos. Each rose bush is a long-lasting

tribute to a North County consumer who passed away and the garden offers a serene space for others to remember them.

The Arc is grateful for the time Cox Communications employees contributed to this project and thank the company for providing

financial assistance to cover the cost of planting material and supplies.

First Health FairThe first Hope & Health Fair hosted by Starlight Center on May 1st was a great success. Friendly booth vendors encouraged consumers to lead healthy lives by making good choices in food and lifestyle. Vendors including the Arthritis Foundation, Chula Vista Police Department Senior Volunteers, Aging and Independent Services, County of San Diego, and The Arc’s Personal and Leisure, Respite, and Independent Living Services’ offered complimentary consultations, demonstrations, giveaways, and promotional items.Hope & Health Fair, a project of Hope and Health for Individuals with Disabilities, was made possible through a grant from the Chula Vista Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation.

Spring CelebrationStarlight Center’s SpringFest Barbeque on May 18th was a swirl of laughter and festivity featuring great food, music, dancing, silent auction, raffles, and craft/floral booths. Special thanks to the Knights of Columbus who served the meals, Starlight Performers for a groovy 70s disco performance, and DJ Rudy Castillo spinning crowd-pleasing hits! Proceeds aid the Capital Campaign to revitalize Starlight Center.

Gift of Time & TalentNicolle Mona began volunteering at The Arc with the Marketing & Development department in January 2012, working on special events and community outreach.A recent graduate of the University of San Diego with a double major in Communications and Psychology, her skills were well-suited to the position. She helped with The Jewels of San Diego gala, produced marketing videos, maintained social media, and assisted with research.She simultaneously volunteered at the Parent/Infant preschool program in National City, helping children reach developmental benchmarks and assisting with a variety of activities.We thank Nicolle Mona for her help and appreciate the impact her volunteering had on our work.

Police K-9 DetailMichael Dolan, employed through ACES, has been working at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot as Mess Attendant since 2009. Michael has an innate love of dogs; friends and co-workers are always amazed at the vast depth of knowledge he possesses about all things related to dogs.One day, while at Petco, Michael ran into MCRD Master Sergeant of the Military Police, James McDonald. As the two spoke, the topic turned to dogs and Michael began listing the names of all the dogs on the K-9 team.Impressed with Michael’s ability to memorize the dogs’ names, Master Sergeant McDonald decided to surprise him with a one-of-a-kind gift for his birthday in February—an invitation to watch a training session of police K-9 dogs and their handlers!The presentation featured obedience techniques, retrieval of property, agility, and suspect apprehension. Additionally, Michael had the opportunity to run a dog through the standard obstacle course. The demonstration was capped off with Michael receiving a certificate deeming him an Honorary Member of the K-9 training force!

A Moving GiftThe Arc of San Diego thanks Las Patronas for their grant of $35,998 which was used to purchase a passenger van with wheelchair lift for the Sulpizio Family Center. The van is used daily to transport consumers on field trips, educational outings, and vocational training activities. Sulpizio Family Center provides services to 127 adults with disabilities.The Arc was one of 12 major beneficiaries to receive funds from proceeds of the Las Patronas 65th annual Jewel Ball, Sapphire.

Dreaming About Camp. Please Help.Last summer, “LJ” Lashanza Johnson was at camp, taking part in familiar rituals and traditions - swimming, hiking, sitting around a campfire. Upbeat and positive, LJ is game for any activity....Water Balloon Fun...LJ is right in the middle! Talent Show...LJ is up in front of everyone, dancing, even singing! End-of- Camp Dance...she never leaves the dance floor!Camp is something LJ looks forward to every year. Months before camp, LJ starts her “Camp Countdown” calendar, crossing out days to the date with big letters, CAMP STARTS! As the day approaches, LJ can hardly contain her excitement. All she does is talk about camp - packing her belongings, sleeping bag, and having fun with friends.LJ is able to go to camp because of the generosity of caring individuals. On her own, she cannot afford the cost of camp. After covering living essentials, LJ has $50 left each month to spend on toiletries, clothes, and recreational activities. Unfortunately, government funding for The Arc’s camp programs has been cut. Sadly, LJ and other campers are faced with the dismaying prospect of not being able to go to campOnce again, we come to you for help. Each summer you have given generously to support our camp program, allowing children and adults with disabilities, who might not otherwise have the opportunity, to attend camp for a week of excitement, fun, and adventure. Many of us have been adversely affected by the economic downturn and are not in a position to be as generous.
