Welcome to Spotlight, the newsletter of Rockhampton Venues and Events. Inside, you’ll find a variety of events at the Pilbeam Theatre, Rockhampton Showgrounds and other venues. Tickets for events listed here are on sale through the Pilbeam Theare Box Office, Dial’n’ Charge on 4927 4111 or on line at www.pilbeamtheatre.com.au For showgrounds events contact the organizations listed with the event. Spotlight is also available online.
Friends of the Theatre, whether they volunteer to work or are ‘supporting’ Friends, receive discounts to many of the shows listed in SPOTLIGHT. Friends also receive this newsletter mailed direct to them. For ‘working’ Friends, unlimited seats are available in exchange for Performance Work Vouchers on events in Spotlight bearing the above symbol. For other events, voucher seats are limited to a total of six seats per performance. Further details as well as membership forms are available from the Box Office.
GENERAL INFORMATIONTheatre programs start promptly at the advertised start time and latecomers will not be admitted until a suitable break in the performance. Smoking is not allowed in any part of the Pilbeam Theatre or other Council venues. The use of cameras and recording devices during performances is illegal and penalties for infringement of copyright in this way are severe. Rockhampton Musical Union: Guys and Dol ls Guys and Dolls Guys and Dolls is set in New York in the 1940s. Small-time gambler Nathan Detroit bets his friend Sky Masterson that he can’t make the next woman he sees fall in love with him. When the next doll happens to be the neighbourhood missionary Sarah Brown, the stage is set for an unforgettable evening’s entertainment. This classic musical’s hit list of favourite and familiar tunes includes If I Were a Bell,I’ve Never Been in Love Before, Take Back Your Mink, Sue Me, Adelaide’s Lament, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat and Guys and Dolls.

2011 Choral FestivalHundreds of children will come together in song for a night of delightful choral music in the 2011 Choral Festival. The children are chosen from more than a dozen state schools from Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast. Conductor of internationally known Birralee Voices, Julie Christiansen OAM will be responsible for an amazing 400 children singing together so book early to avoid disappointment.

Dance Festival If you love dance, then the eighth annual Rockhampton Dance Festival is the place to be in September/October school holidays. Competition will run from Friday 23 September to Friday 30 September. The Festival Concert and Trophy presentation will be Saturday 1 October commencing 2pm. Everyone entering the theatre must have a ticket (including competitors).
Jul ius Caesar Peter Evans, Bell Shakespeare’s new Associate Artistic Director, takes Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and transports it to the corridors of backroom politics. This time, when Caesar gets the axe, it’s the media who roar like an angry mob. This sharp political drama puts friendship to the test and reveals a stark contrast between our intentions and our actions. With Alex Menglet as Caesar and Kate Mulvany as the conniving Cassius, we go behind the scenes as yet another leader is forced from office. Presented by Rockhampton Regional Council. DrillFest will provide an opportunity for all industry players to discuss current issues and learn from specialists and other colleagues. Vienna Phi lharmonic OrchestraLive SimulcastIn a first for regional Queensland, music lovers will be able to experience the magic of one of the world’s finest orchestras when the Vienna Philharmonic is simulcast live to the Pilbeam Theatre. The concert, being staged at Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) will be delivered via satellite to the big screen at the Pilbeam Theatre. Under renowned conductor Christoph Eshenbach the Vienna Philharmonic will perform famous masterworks by composers connected with the orchestra and its home city – Brahms, Mozart and Bruckner. Audiences in QPAC’s Concert Hall, Rockhampton’s Pilbeam Theatre and five other centres around the state will simultaneously experience this extraordinary orchestra in its first visit to Queensland. Presented by the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Rockhampton Regional Council. This is a trial event, free admission applies.

One Night Only One Night Only is North Rockhampton High School’s showcase of the best of the Arts in 2011. See the award-winning concert band, stage band and string orchestra, the energy of the dance troupes, the power of both Greek tragedy and modern, experimental theatre, and the fun of fashion and wearable art. The evening also features a special “Storytellers of the Floods” documentary film made with the assistance of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. RGS Music FestivalSome of the highlights of this year’s Rockhampton Grammar School Music Festival include musical selections from FAME the secondary school’s 2011musical, vocal items from the senior choir, chamber choir and the primary choirs, the memorable signing choirs, stage band, symphonic band, concert band, string orchestra, jazz orchestra and talented student soloists. Cold Chisel Iconic rock band Cold Chisel will hit the stage in Rockhampton in October as part of the Light the Nitro Tour, their biggest tour in nearly 30 years. The basic facts of Cold Chisel’s career need no retelling but the songs of Don Walker, Phil Small, the late Steve Prestwich, Ian Moss and Jimmy Barnes are now utterly engrained in the fabric of Australasian life. Cold Chisel have promised to showcase “one or two” new tunes on the Light The Nitro Tour. The setlist will also feature more than 20 of their classic songs.
