But what happens when these servicemen and women are discharged from duty and have to acclimate to life as a civilian? Best-selling author and U.S. Army veteran Wes Moore searches for answers to some of the difficult questions veterans face when they return home from war in the new three-part series Coming Back With Wes Moore. Over the course of the series, Moore meets with 10 servicemen and women from across the United States who are readjusting to civilian life after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. “We want to better humanize re-integration by taking the audience into the lives of these men and women as they return from war,” he said. Moore’s desire to learn why some veterans easily reintegrate into society while others struggle was sparked by the suicide of Brian Collins, one of his oldest friends and a fellow officer. Viewers learn about Brian’s story in Coming Back (June 29). Fitting In (July 6) looks at the concept of identity and how it is altered both during deployment and again when veterans return home, fundamentally changed by war, and needing to reestablish their identity in a world they used to know but that is now profoundly changed. The final episode, Moving Forward (July 13), explores the veterans’ common drive to find a new mission and dedicate themselves to something bigger than themselves. Moore hopes the series will initiate a national conversation on the subject while providing veterans with an outlet to share and reflect on their experiences. “There is more we can do than simply saying ‘thank you for your service’” he said. “We can truly show our gratitude by asking them to share their experiences.” THREE-PART SERIES PREMIERES SUNDAY, JUNE 29 AT 9PM Learn more at pbs.org/ coming-back-with-wes-moore Preview Coming Back with Wes Moore online at wliw.org/video Learn more at wliw.org SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL ARTS
