when I was getting frustratedbeing seated in a heated room afew months back. That idea grewfrom its original form to become aninnovative product, which wenamed it the Ecocell Brick. Weconducted some researches tofind out if such a product could bedeveloped, and were amazed todiscover that there are heatconductivity materials, which couldbe used to produce such brick,”shared Kyle Tham, final yearstudent pursuing the Bachelor ofCommerce majoring in Accountingat Taylor’s University, who is alsothe leader of Team Ecocell.

Ecocell Brick is an ecologicalconstruction material that usesdistinctively different raw and

nature by-materials such as paper and rice hulls over and above the conventionalones such as clay and cement bricks. The product is made out of recycled wastematerial, which is able to maintain the temperature in a room and decrease airpollution.

Alice Cheah Wai Kuan, lecturer at Taylor’s Business School and one of thementors for the team said “We are proud to know that it was a clear cut win forTeam Ecocell, after receiving the feedback from the judges. The 12-minute finalpresentation was one of the determining factors of our win where the members ofTeam Ecocell pitched their business proposal to the venture capitalists with fullconfidence.”

Team Ecocell was privileged to have lecturers from different faculties, among themthe School of Engineering and School of Architecture, Building and Design atTaylor’s University, and alumni who were past winners of HSBC YEC, to coachthem on the product design, financial aspects as well as feasibility of productmarketing strategies.

“I was once in their shoes and I understand that a little help from us – those whohad gone through the competition before, will be useful in preparing the team forthe regional finals. As an alumni, I have no qualms in sharing what I have learntand play a part in developing these students to become future leaders in theindustry,” enthused Billy Ooi, currently a Technology Analyst at Accenture, whowas also a Taylor’s Business School graduate. He was part of the winning team atthe HSBC YEC in year 2010.

Managing the marketing aspects for the innovative brick, such as seeking a way toprovide a solution to low-cost housing, identifying the target market and ensuringthat the product is compliant with the legalities required, Nicole Teo, currentlypursuing her final year of Bachelor in Applied Finance, said the team learnt aboutthe importance of effective time management, being goal-oriented and having apositive mentality to take them through all the challenges faced in preparation forthis competition and to emerge as the National Champion.

Malek Ali from BFM Media and Mohamed Ashraf from HSBC Amanah MalaysiaBerhad, who were part of the panel of judges in the national finals of thecompetition, offered assistance to review Ecocell’s business plan and providefeedback prior to the regional finals.

Under the leadership of Associate Professor Dr. Lokasundari Vijaya Sankar,Taylor’s University School of Communication’s SEARCH: The Journal of the SouthEast Asia Research centre for Communication and Humanities is now indexed byScopus. The accolade came in time with the University’s recent launch of the2012-2016 Strategic Plans and is in line with one of its six key strategic thrusts on‘High Impact Research & Commercialisation’.

SEARCH is a peer-reviewed journal publishing original works in all areas ofCommunication and Humanities. The aim of this publication is to provide authorsand readers a venue for dissemination of information pertaining to developments inthe field of Communication and Humanities while preserving the standards of thehighest quality.

Scopus, officially named SciVerse Scopus, is the world’s largest abstract andcitation database of peer-reviewed literatures. It serves as a bibliographicdatabase and contains 47 million records with over 19,500 titles from 5,000publishers worldwide, of which 16,500 are peer-reviewed journals in the scientific, technical, medical, and social sciences (including arts and humanities). It is ownedby Elsevier and is available online by subscription. With this, SEARCH becomesthe second Taylor’s Press journal which has been accorded such recognition; thefirst one was the School of Engineering’s JESTEC. Taylor’s University is also thefirst Malaysian private institution to have two of its journals indexed by Scopus.

Dr. Vijaya, who is also the Editor in Chief of SEARCH, expressed her pride and joyin getting the journal indexed. ‘Publishing a journal is more than just putting ink topaper. It requires attention to detail so that quality research is published in a timelymanner. Being indexed, no doubt will attract more readers and authors to thejournal and this is a good thing. We at SEARCH are delighted at this recognition’.

Moving forward, the editorial team aims to get the journal indexed in SSCI (SocialSciences Citation Index) in the hopes of getting it to be the only communicationjournal in the region to get this recognition amongst the scholarly community.

“Since achieving the University status in 2010, Taylor’s has put into place variousopportunities to produce graduates with the competitive advantage to shine in theirfuture workplaces. Moving towards achieving one of our University’s strategic keythrusts – ‘Transformational Teaching and Learning’, we identified the need toestablish a taskforce in 2011 to review and enhance the TGC,” said ProfessorDato’ Dr. Hassan.

This taskforce comprises key leaders in the university, and is headed by Mr.Pradeep Nair. The taskforce identified 7-school and 14-university levelimplementation initiatives to ensure opportunities for all students to graduate withthe TGC, thus enhancing their employability among the top corporateorganisations, locally and internationally.

Datin Professor Dr. Ir. Siti Hamisah lauded Taylor’s efforts for always being at theforefront in implementing best practices such as TGC. “There is an acute need toimprove the current tertiary education system to correspond with the industry’srequirements and demands. The TGC is a timely initiative in line with the nationalagenda to equip our graduates with the essential skills that will enhance theiremployability. There is a distinct gap between the types of graduates we areproducing, and what the employers need, to fill up the talent pipeline, which needsto be bridged. Therefore the Ministry is pleased to note that Taylor’s University iscomplementing the Ministry’s efforts in bridging this gap,” said Datin Professor Dr.Siti Hamisah in her speech.

Datin Professor Dr. Ir. Siti Hamisah lauded Taylor’s efforts for always being at the forefront inimplementing best practices such as TGC in her speech.

She added that our graduates need to have a global mindset, which can bedeveloped further through increased international internship and mobilityprogrammes such as student exchanges. She quoted an example whereby on arecent trip to Beijing, she met a few chefs at a prestigious 5-star hotel who weregraduates of Taylor’s. Datin Professor Dr. Siti Hamisah went on to commendTaylor’s for leading the way in producing graduates who are highly employable, notonly in Malaysia but also on other countries as well.

“With the support rendered by private institutions of higher education such asTaylor’s, the Ministry is confident that Malaysia will be able to achieve its objectivesof enhancing local graduates’ employability as well as transforming Malaysia into asuccessful nation with some of the best talents to lead the country,” she said.
