I’m helping this fisher bring his catch of fish in. Can you spot the 6 differences in the picture?

One picture shows the safest and best way to catch fish. It means there are always more left in the sea, and seabirds and other animals are safe. Which picture do you think it is?

Answers: The picture showing the best way to keep our ocean creatures safe is picture 1! All the differences are in picture 2: 1. There are no ribbons on the line going out from the trawler / 2. The net has very small mesh holes / 3. There are more, and smaller, fish in the net. / 4. There is an extra bird in the sky / 5. There is a flag on the boat / 6. There is a life belt missing from the boat.

Can you see the ribbons on the line going out from the trawler? They cleverly act as a bird scarer so birds don’t get tangled up in the fishing line.

The picture shows how we can make sure we catch fish in a way that still looks after the creatures in the ocean!

And did you notice the fishing net has holes that are bigger than the small fish? This means smaller fish can escape. If we let small fish escape the nets this means they can continue to grow and have baby fish to increase fish numbers.
