Joshua Youth Attending the Prayer Breakfast, was an excep- tional group of young men – Joshua Youth Leadership Group. “We work with eighth graders through college age, put them in camp, and teach them life skills, job skills and such,” said Servant Wesley. “In the news, you only hear about the 10 to 15 percent in the African American com- munity who are criminals. The other [85 to 90] percent are never spoken about! Of those, most are the aver- age person, middle-class families with kids, who are just going about their lives getting by. But 27 to 30 percent are the overachiev- ers; these are our Joshua youths. They are still living among the drugs, crime and sex, but they choose not to! They will be our next may- ors, city commissioners and congressman,” he said. As part of the Joshua Youth program, Servant Wesley brings in lawyers, doctors and entrepreneurs as monthly guest speakers “so [Joshua youths] can have vision that ‘this is my future,’ even though the pain and suffering they are going through right now is great.” “For example, we had a sergeant and deputy from Delray Police Dept. come in to speak when all of that shooting was going on. We deal with current issues; e.g., what to do if you are pulled over. As it turned out, one of the kids wants to be a policeman, which is shock- ing to me.” Afterward, the two of them hooked up to talk more [with the youth] about law enforce- ment as a profession. “Another example, my son wants to be a patent lawyer. We also brought in an attor- ney to speak,” said Servant Wesley. On Saturday, five Joshua youths were honored, with GPAs from 3.2 to 5.1. “The top one, my son Ma- nasseh, is a junior. Instead of coming back to Deerfield Beach High School next year, he is going directly to Broward Community Col- lege,” he said. SELBACH , Gustav “Gus” MD died at home from Alzheimer’s Disease on Feb. 24. He was born in Dansville, NY in 1932, the only child to Esther and Gustav Sr. He attended the University of Rochester and played bas- ketball his freshman year, then transferred to Miami University of Ohio to com- plete his undergraduate degree in Chemistry before returning to Rochester to complete his medical degree in 1958. He met his wife Pauline “Polly” while completing his internship at Rush Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago where they were married 1958-59. Then they were off to Ohio State Uni- versity where he completed his residency in Anatomical & Clinical Pathology 1959-63. He also was a Medical Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service and worked with the National Cancer Institute during 1960- 63. They moved to Zanesville, Ohio where he was on staff at Good Samaritan and Bethesda Hospitals from 1963-69. In 1969, he took his young family to Ft. Lauderdale for a vacation while he attended laboratory equipment training in Hialeah. After returning, they decided to move to Florida. Gus was hired by the North Broward Hospital where he served as chief pathologist and lab direc- tor until retiring in 1998. Gus was an avid basketball player and it was on the basket- ball courts at the old Lighthouse Point City Hall and later at Dan Witt Park where he was known as “Doc.” He played in basket- ball leagues and nightly pick-up games for years against high school and college kids into his 60s. In addition to playing, he coached his four sons and his grandchildren while Polly was the official scorekeeper. They were very supportive fans at their grandkids sporting events until his health began to deteriorate. He is survived by his wife Polly of 58 years, sons and their spouses and children: Jim and Jill (McCallion) Lindsay & Troy - LHP, John and Robin (Shaw) Jordan, Taylor & Kristen - LHP, Jeff and Courtney (Perry) Zach- ary & Matthew - Pompano Beach and Chris and Bella (Cibelle) Kevin & Dylan - LHP. He was born in the Ukraine and came to the U.S. at the age of 16, later enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Orthodox Cathedral of Christ the Sav- iour Church, the J. Dewey Hawkins Masonic Lodge #331, Scottish Rite-Lake Worth, and Mahi Temple- Miami. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Enis “Dolly” (nee Freda) Jakolenko; sister, Nina Fortune of Pompa- no Beach, and brother, Nikolaus Solotowski of Dothan, AL; niece, Nadia Grady; nephew, Steven For- tune; 1 Great Niece; 4 Great Nephews; 1 Great-Great Niece; and 1 Great-Great Nephew. Agenda item No. 4 was the only item pulled for discussion. The Resolution of Deer- field Beach City Com- mission urges the Florida Legislature and Governor to oppose a pending public ethics and integrity com- mittee House Bill (#PCB PIE 17-03) in Tallahassee requiring municipal elected officials and candidates for elected municipal office to file an annual form-6 earn- ings form. New District 4 Commis- sioner Todd Drosky said he researched this issue of ethics, and while there is a proposed $465,000 impact to cities, and the city was being asked to oppose it, he was not opposed to this particular item. Commissioner Battle said Broward League of Cities was asking the city not to support the bill, saying, “HB17 is designed to do away with Home Rule as we know it. It says you can’t make your own rules for the city and county.” Commissioner Miller chimed in that Deerfield Beach already has a stricter Ethics Code than the state and Broward County. Ganz added, “We have the strictest rules in the state.” According to Rosenzweig, one of three residents who spoke, the city currently requires four hours of eth- ics training; it used to be eight hours. He said the bill would require every city commissioner to give full background on his or her investments. Resident Bett Willett called it “a big mistake to vote against [the pending House Bill],” adding that ethics is a big problem for all elected officials. Resident David Cohen said the city is fortunate to have a City Attorney who is above reproach, who shows great patience when conduct- ing required Ethics Training for the commission. “If it’s a little bit of a nui- sance, it’s certainly worth the money,” said Cohen. Before taking a vote, Ganz asked City Attorney Andy Maurodis to clarify that a vote “for” this [Resolution] was a vote to oppose the Legislation. Miller made a motion to support the Resolution to oppose [a “yes” vote], with Battle and Parness also vot- ing “yes;” and Drosky and ultimately Ganz voting “no.” The next Deerfield Beach city commission meeting is scheduled for April 4 at 6:45 p.m.
