IN LONDON:
● Refer to soccer as “football”, the
bathroom as the “loo” and a guy as a “chap”
● When greeting an English native, greet
with a firm handshake and a polite “nice to meet you sir/ma’am
IN PARIS:
● Greet a French person with “bonjour,” for it as
seen as polite
● It is also expected to “faire la bise”, or kiss cheeks when greeting
a French person

IN BARCELONA:● Always shake hands with all present in a
room● Spaniards speak a lot with their hands and
tend to stand very close while talking, do not mimic them because they will not find it
funny
EUROPE'S MOST LOVED SPORTEUROPE'S MOST LOVED SPORT
FOOTBALL!All over Europe, whether in bars, arenas,
streets or random fields, football (or soccer) is enjoyed passionately. Every year beginning in August, die-hard fans
represent their favorite teams wearing jerseys to football matches and even on the
regular! A great way to experience European culture is to attend an arena filled
with screaming fans, decked out in their team's color at a football match.
COMMUNICATION CHALLENGESCOMMUNICATION CHALLENGES
You are given a task by a chaperone, but don't completely understand what to do
● Don't be afraid to communicate and ask him/her to repeat your task descriptively and make sure to focus on what they are
saying
● Ask questions! Clarify what this person wants or needs so you feel confident you
can do your best
● Make sure to be a respectful listener and you will be respected back
You take offense to a comment a French native has said at a competition or you accidentally make someone feel uncomfortable
● Europeans have a different sense of humor, which happens to be very sarcastic. Consider this and try laughing it off!
● If you feel criticized, try to fix what they have commented on and realize that they have been selected for the competition because they follow the same criteria as you. You are equal and hey are there to befriend and work with you!
● If you unintentionally say something rude, it is always nice to apoligize... and quickly! Timing is everything
Europe is a totally different culture, so it wouldn't be surprising to come across a few communication challenges. Don't worry! Here are some example scenarios and tips to feel better about
the situation.

A bump in the road may cause some tension between two group
members
● Think of ways to let the two talk about something to reconnect. If
you know they loved talking about music, bring up some music talk at
the dinner table
● Try isolating them! Attempt a mission of getting the two talk on behalves of themselves and see if they can resolve their problem by
talking to one another
● Pull the members aside and try to get them to understand where each
is coming from. Empathy is important!
A member of the group thinks their opinion is always right, causing
tension in the group
● Spend some time away from that member to let time pass as you think clearly about the situation
● Try talking to the member using an “I” message, offering a tip on how they can state their opinion more
politely
● Politely and gently suggest to the member to attempt considering
other members' feelings

You disagree with an idea that everyone else supports
● State your opinion politely and support it. Everyone's opinion is valued, and
remember, if members disagree, let it pass and think of the positivity in the
idea everyone has agreed on!
● Work on the idea and remember that there will be other times your idea will be
followed through with
● Consider why you may not like the idea. Sometimes you have to accept, majority
rule
A group member starts acting bossy and trying to take lead
● Politely remind the member that she is a team member and that worrying so much about so many responsibilities isn't just
her job!
● Suggest a different way they could be acting, nicely of course, with other
members. This can help divide power and bring a voice to all members of the
group
● Give them a tip using an “I” message. Don't use a “you” message, for that may
cause the person to feel embarrassed and get defensive!
