Really is all the criticism of Port Adelaide chairman David Koch warranted?

As chairman, he has every right to make comment on how his side is performing, if not for what he has achieved off-field alone, especially recently.

Obviously though when the Power is succeeding on the field, he doesn’t need to get involved as the coaching staff and players are doing their job but when they are underperforming, it’s his duty to question what is happening.

He holds the purse strings and, in particular this year, after he has increased the club’s spend on coaching requirements.

Maybe the truth hurts.

The efforts of Port Adelaide’s players over recent weeks have been lacklustre to say the least.

Even an all-in scuffle on the half-time siren last Saturday night against Geelong couldn’t light the fuse as players went into their shell further after the break.

This follows one of the club’s most insipid displays against Greater Western Sydney the week before too, suggesting things are in a poor state around the club at present.

It has created on-field frustration with ill discipline, such as unprovoked behind the play

incidents leading to suspensions which also let the club down, and players bickering over each other’s actions.

It is not a good look and adds further fodder to suggest issues run deeper behind the scenes at Alberton.

The club though has come out to shut down rumours of player rifts, but if there wasn’t a problem wouldn’t it have just kept quiet.

The fans aren’t too concerned with discord off the field, they only want to see on-field success

But if it’s affecting the way the team plays then things need to be rectified in-house.

Possibly that’s where Koch erred and didn’t need to express publicly the discussions he had with captain Travis Boak and the playing group but sometimes that is needed to gain a response.

If the players can’t handle such criticism, the problem is with them as their efforts of late have been unacceptable and they do really need to harden up.

There has clearly been a lack of on-field leadership due to non-existent communication which has led to too much individualism when team resolve is required.

Damning on the rest of the playing group has been that a

A new sponsor has flown in as naming rights partner of Australia’s premier motorsport category which will also involve a rebranding of the Supercars Championship.

Virgin Australia has come to the starting grid in a five-year multi-million dollar deal in what is seen as a boost for tourism as well but ‘V8’ has been removed from the championship title.

Six-time V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup has been named as a new Virgin Australia Brand Ambassador too.

It’s the first time the championship has had a title sponsor since Shell backed the competition between 1993 and 2001.

Four-time Olympian Craig Mottram has failed in his pursuit of going to a fifth Olympics Games.

Previously competing in the 5000m in Olympic competition, the 35 year-old veteran was chasing his first spot in the marathon but faded over the final stages of his last qualifying chance, the Warsaw Marathon.

On the other hand, Victorian runner Liam Adams became the second fastest qualifier for Australia’s three-man Olympic team in Poland.

Mottram will continue to inspire the Australian Athletics team and has been of particular assistance to South Australian marathon runner Jess Trengove in reaching her Rio dream.

three-gamer in Darcy Byrne-Jones has been showing more passion than his more senior teammates.

The leaders of the club have needed to stand up to inspire but have been taking the safe option on too many occasions.

Their impact on the contest is crucial for the club to move forward but it takes everyone to have some respect for their own performance.

Koch hasn’t been the only one to critique their performances.

One would also think the heighten media focus would resonate within the playing group to lift their efforts.

‘Kochy’ simply wears his heart on his sleeve and is as passionate about the Port Adelaide Football Club as any long standing fan or past player.

If the players showed as much desire as he did then it would no doubt be sitting atop the ladder.

However, the club at the moment is not playing as the Port Adelaide we know.

‘Kochy’ is just adding the spark, it is up to the players to ignite it.

The Power meets another club facing much the same derision in Richmond on Saturday night.

The winner will gain some relief but the pressure builds further for the loser.

It was an Anzac weekend of highs and lows in footy circles. Sadly more lows for our two local AFL sides, especially with issues festering further at Port Adelaide.• Disrespectful from Channel Seven cutting

the Last Post short before the Melbourne-Richmond game on Saturday night to go to a My Kitchen Rules ad – we’ve seen enough of MKR anyway, thank heavens it’s finished – Seven at least apologised later

• Melbourne ratings for Channel Seven’s Anzac Day coverage since it got the AFL rights back have been on the slide – 2012 (677k), 2013 (581k), 2014 (519k), 2015 (431k), 2016 (408k) – is interest in solely watching Collingwood and Essendon even waning in Victoria?

• Seven actually had a good weekend, not – its Sydney arm tweeted, “Former US college basketballer Steele Sidebottom kicks points on debut in @afl” – Sydney still doesn’t understand AFL, does it? – Sidebottom actually won the Anzac Day medal

• The Magpies’ American experiment Mason Cox (who actually kicked the first goal) came to fruition on Monday but maybe it was the big Texan’s mum who was the bigger winner, collecting on her son being the first goal-kicker in the match (she was quick to point out it was with a group of family and friends mind you, it would have been illegal for her to do it with a bookmaker under strict AFL rules)

• The AFL combine was back in the US on Monday to find three more prospects to be given their opportunity to make the big league in Australia

• Happy to hear that Bulldog favourite Robert Murphy’s knee operation was successful last week, from the man himself who added the obligatory hospital bed selfie was on the way of which he later sent a picture of topless docker Nat Fyfe, trying to show the Brownlow medalist as himself – well played Bob

• Will West Coast’s poor away record diminish its chances of winning another premiership? – the Eagles have been 1-7 against top eight sides on the road over the past two years (four of their past five games outside Perth (against Hawthorn twice, the Swans and Adelaide) and the other was a draw against Gold Coast) and getting worse on every trip interstate

• Hard to believe it was five years ago, in 2011, when Melbourne last won just two games in a row before beating Richmond at the weekend

• Cale Hooker is off the table as the much sort after Bomber Cale Hooker signs a five-year deal to stay at Essendon

• Can you believe Spotless Stadium, home of the Giants, has been voted the number one venue for fan experience? – it even took the mantle from the Suns’ home Metricon Stadium which received the recognition for the previous few years – maybe people just like the extra room they have around them in the smaller crowds at these grounds

• It was once ‘Eddie Everywhere’ but, of late, it’s been ‘Citizen Kane’ with former Port Adelaide star Kane Cornes everywhere on TV, radio and in print – wasn’t he meant to be a fireman?

AFL NEWS

Sometimes a loss like the Crows experienced last week to Hawthorn could benefit a side more than not.

Sure Adelaide would have preferred to come away from the Friday night blockbuster the victor against the reigning premier but, despite dubious umpiring for the whole game not just the highly focused last few minutes, it was costly errors late that prevented it from taking the points.

However, the shattered Crows group would have still gained much belief from its performance that it is heading in the right direction with a game plan that can reward it with greater success.

The umpires it can do nothing about but the ability to make better judgement calls at crucial moments will have been learnt to avoid any similar losses in future games.

Things like cleaner foot skills around the ground especially when fatigue from the new interchange cap affects players, like with Smith’s kick to Seedsman, or being more defensively forceful around opposition goal, as Cheney should have been in preventing Puopolo from getting his foot to the ball and being able to dribble a vital goal among other incidents throughout the contest.

The players were visibly hurt from the loss, which coach Don Pyke would have wanted to see. But he would have also made certain that focus was redirected by at least Sunday to their next challenge of dishing out more pain to winless Fremantle at Adelaide Oval this Saturday.

Major attention during the week would have been on enhancing the side’s defensive actions to ensure similar circumstances to last Friday night are not repeated.

While the attacking, fast running game plan is giving Adelaide’s forwards more supply each week, it is also being caught on the quick counterattack which is giving the opposition greater ease in scoring as well.

The Crows has proven to be a potent forward combination scoring more than 100 points four of their five games so far and just missing out on the other. But have reduced their defensive pressure to allow opposition side to also tally more than 100 points on three occasions, nearly on another and more than 30 scoring shots on the other.

Positives to come from loss

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Under these circumstances, games will always remain tight and in danger of seeing what happened last Friday night occur, which we have seen from Adelaide’s margins so far – a 10-point loss to the Kangaroos, a 10-point win over Sydney and a three-point loss at the hands of the Hawks.

Therefore the back six just needs to be more restrictive and inhibit their opponents’ own freedom to run and create.

It is widely declared by most clubs that their intentions are to score more than 100 points per game themselves while limiting their

opponents to under 80 points per game.

The Crows’ defence is still young and inexperienced which the Hawthorn game highlighted further but it is developing quickly and it can take a valuable lesson from last week’s exciting encounter.

The Dockers’ forward structure is currently struggling at the moment which gives Pyke an ideal opportunity to test a stronger defensive resolve and really hamper their scoring potential while maintaining his attacking mindset.

Adelaide does not want to enter this week’s contest complacent with Fremantle still looking for its first win of the season after five rounds but last week’s result should again ensure a fully focused squad going into this match.

There is the chance for the Crows to build percentage this week, which will prove crucial at season’s end.

N. MELBOURNE V W. BULLDOGSFriday 7.20pm, Etihad Stadium

Historically, North Melboune and the Western Bulldogs are the AFL’s two most evenly matched teams. After 155 matches, both sides are locked on 76 wins with three games drawn in 1954, 1973 and 1987. The Bulldogs squared the ledger in round 22 last year at Docklands, ending a four-game streak by the Kangaroos, winning by 23 points, 14.12 (96) to 10.13 (73). The Roos had only four individual goal-kickers with Scott Higgins, Drew Petrie and Jarrad Waite all scoring three and Brent Harvey one. The Bulldogs haven’t won back-to-back games against North since winning four in a row from 2009-10. These two sides finished first and second on the ladder in 1998 – the Roos securing the minor premiership with a five-point win over the Dogs in the final minor round. However, the Crows ultimately trumped them both for the premiership.NORTH MELBOURNE $1.77 WESTERN BULLDOGS $2.05

GEELONG V GOLD COASTSaturday 6.55pm, Simonds Stadium

Geelong has won five of its six games against Gold Coast. The Cats have won three out of three at Geelong as well but only once has Gary Ablett returned to his former home. That was in 2013 when he had 34 possessions and scored two goals as the Suns looked poised for an upset in Simonds Stadium first AFL encounter under lights. Scores were level at three quarter-time but Geelong peeled off 9.5 to 1.1 in the final term to win by 52 points. The Suns won their only game against Geelong the following year on the Gold Coast – Harley Bennell booting six goals in a 40-point win. Their most recent meeting was back at Geelong in round three last year when Ablett missed the game with his shoulder injury. The Suns led by 12 points at half-time but the Cats score nine goals to five in the second half to win 16.9 (105) to 13.18 (96).GEELONG $1.17 GOLD COAST $5.00

GWS GIANTS V HAWTHORNSaturday 4.05pm, Spotless Stadium

There are six sides GWS has yet to beat. Hawthorn is not among them. The Hawks had an early season wobble, going down by 10 points in their only previous clash at the Sydney Showgrounds in round six last year, 16.12 (108) to 14.14 (98). The Hawks led by 15 points at quarter-time and by 18 at the five-minute mark of the last term. However, three goals from James Stewart, Jeremy Cameron and Ryan Griffen turned the game on its head and the Hawks were unable to recover. Cameron finished with seven in the upset win while Devon Smith kicked three of his own. GWS had threatened an upset in their previous encounter at the MCG in 2014, leading just before the last change before the Hawks steadied to win by seven points.GWS GIANTS $2.70 HAWTHORN $1.45

RICHMOND V PORT ADELAIDESaturday 6.55pmMCG

Richmond has won four and drawn one of its last six games against Port Adelaide. Its only defeat since 2011 was a crushing 57-point reversal in the 2014 first elimination final at Adelaide Oval. The Tigers returned to the scene of the crime last year to beat Port by 33 points, 11.10 (76) to 5.13 (43). Jack Riewoldt scored four goals in the win. The sides haven’t met at the MCG since the final round of the 2012 season when they produced a draw from a dead rubber with both sides out of finals contention. It was a see-sawing game with the Tigers leading by seven points deep into time-on before an Aaron Young goal and Dom Cassisi behind squared things up. Port’s only win against Richmond at the MCG in four games came in 2007. This is one of only two games the Power is drawn to play at the ground this season.RICHMOND $1.70 PORT ADELAIDE $2.13

MELBOURNE V ST KILDASaturday 1.15pm, Etihad Stadium

St Kilda’s plummet down the ladder in recent seasons hasn’t stopped its bullying of Melbourne. The Saints have won their last 12 straight games against the Demons, double the length of their previous best streaks from 1967-70 and 1971-75. Melbourne hasn’t beaten St Kilda in 10 years, its last victory by 18 points in the 2006 second elimination final. Nathan Jones, Sam Fisher, Leigh Montagna and Nick Riewoldt are the only remaining players still with their clubs from that day. Nick Dal Santo, Brendon Goddard and Mark Jamar also played in that match. Of St Kilda’s 12 straight wins only one of them has been by less than 17 points – a two-point win in their first meeting last year at Docklands in round 11. Montagna kicked the winner at the 26-minute mark to preserve the Saints’ winning run.MELBOURNE $1.92 ST KILDA $1.92

ADELAIDE V FREMANTLESaturday 1.40pm, Adelaide Oval

Fremantle has won its last four games against Adelaide – a new club record for the Dockers. The Crows have failed to reach 60 points in any of those four games, being stuck in the 50s for all of them. Adelaide last beat Fremantle at Football Park in the 2012 second semi-final by 10 points. Last year, the Dockers won at Adelaide Oval by 11 points in a game best remembered for the shoot-out between superstars Nathan Fyfe and Patrick Dangerfield who were opposed to each other on the night. Both went their separate ways though, Fyfe gathering 40 possessions, six tackles and a goal while Dangerfield also kicked a goal and had 38 possessions of his own along with eight tackles. The Crows shade this battle 19 wins to 15 while they also lead 14 wins to six in Adelaide. ADELAIDE $1.28 FREMANTLE $3.60

CARLTON V ESSENDONSunday 2.50pm, MCG

Widely tipped to fill the league’s bottom two rungs, Carlton and Essendon meet for the first time this year at the MCG. Last year, they met just once for the first time since 1992. The Bombers won in round three by 21 points, 16.9 (105) to 11.18 (84). Joe Daniher, David Zaharakis and Ben Howlett all kicked three goals. The league’s two most successful clubs filled the bottom two positions 10 years ago in 2006. Both sides won only three games and drew with each other. It is 16 years since they filled the top two rungs on the ladder, Carlton ultimately missing the grand final in 2000 after being beaten by Melbourne in the preliminary final. Carlton hasn’t beaten Essendon since 2012, losing four and drawing once since then.CARLTON $1.57 ESSENDON $2.40

BRISBANE V SYDNEYSunday 12.40pm, Gabba

Sydney has won 15 and drawn one of its last 18 games against Brisbane since the Lions’ last grand final appearance in 2004. Brisbane’s only wins since then both came in 2009. The Swans have since responded with eight wins in a row, their longest streak against the Lions. The narrowest of those eight wins has been 20 points and the Lions have failed to pass 68 points in their last seven games against the Swans. Their only meeting last year was at the Gabba in round 15 when Sydney won 10.10 (70) to 7.7 (49). The Lions led 7.3 to 6.4 midway through the third term but were outscored 4.6 to 0.4 after that. This will be the sides’ third straight meeting at the Gabba where the Swans now lead nine wins to eight with one draw. BRISBANE $6.50 SYDNEY $1.11

West Coast has won its last two games against Collingwood but the Eagles haven’t won three in a row against the Pies since their club record run of 10 straight wins from 1994-2000. Their only meeting last season saw the Eagles win by 31 points at Docklands, 11.21 (87) to 7.14 (56). Josh Kennedy and Mark LeCras kicked three goals apiece. This game though is in Perth where the sides last met in 2014, resulting in a 60-point win to the Eagles. Scott Lycett and Jack Darling both kicked four goals as the Eagles scored 10 goals to three after half-time. Collingwood’s last win against West Coast was also in 2014 at the MCG when it won by eight points. The Eagles shade this fixture 23 wins to 22 with a famous draw in the 1990 qualifying final. SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 6BY CHRIS KENDALL

CENTRAL DISTRICT V NORWOOD saturday 12.10pm, MY MONEY HOUSE OVALchannel seven

The Bulldogs stunned Port last week with a high pressure, hard running game that the Magpies were unable to contain. Nick Holman’s best game for the club was complemented by Dallas Hill’s four goals and coach Roy Laird will be hammering home the need to maintain similar pressure on a Norwood outfit which faded noticeably in the second half against Sturt last week.

The Redlegs have had flashes of brilliance mixed with frustrating passages and coach Ben Warren will be pondering how the group can flick a collective switch rather than in bursts. The onball brigade, such as Matthew Panos and Jarryd Cachia, maintain their usual solid numbers. But more versatility in attack is a key to being less predictable for opposition defences. Central appears well placed to bank another two points if it can maintain its same self belief as last week.TIP: Central District 13-24

SOUTH ADELAIDE V ADELAIDESunday 2.10pm, Hickinbotham OvalLive stream SANFL App and www.sanfl.com.au

Undoubted match of the round, with the winner being the only undefeated team for the season. The fashion in which Adelaide is finishing games so strongly is proving a headache for opposition teams to counter, particularly given many have been well in touch at three quarter time. South has been finding gears when needed, and the number of options in attack are proving difficult to hold for lengthy periods.

The unheralded defence at Noarlunga is also setting a sound tone, with Brad Crabb, Tom Fields and Matt Rankine linking well with the midfield to set up scoring options. This will be their stiffest test to date against a team whose hard running and quick spread is opening up the opposition repeatedly on the counterattack. There is a real case to be made for either team to win without surprising, but will just lean to Adelaide to take the points in an entertaining tussle.TIP: Adelaide 1-12

STURT V PORT MAGPIES Sunday 2.10pm, Peter Motley OvalLife FM

Sturt keeps flying under the radar in quietly moving to third following an impressive victory against Norwood last week. A very even team effort was again the key and is increasing the headaches for opposition coaches to counter. The Magpies coaching box is still adjusting to 2016, with coach Chad Cornes publicly slamming his players for playing selfish football in a disappointing loss to Central last week.

Ensuring all of the AFL listed players are working to the same gameplan is an ongoing challenge for the AFL reserves teams. It will be intriguing to see how the Magpies respond this week against a team playing an impressive brand of football. If the Double Blues are allowed the same latitude seen in the second half against Norwood, then they may be very hard to reel in, particularly with a number of players capable of snaring two to three goals. This is a real flip of the coin game, but will just lean to Sturt to continue its run.TIP: Sturt 1-12

NORTH ADELAIDE V GLENELG Sunday 2.10pm, Prospect OvalLive stream SANFL App and www.sanfl.com.au

Glenelg is playing an impressive brand of football without the rewards, again falling short last week against the Adelaide Reserves. The efforts at the stoppages were crucial in slowing Adelaide’s momentum and a similar effort will be needed against a North side finding that one bad quarter each week is hindering its undoubted progress.

The pleasing aspect for both coaches is that a number of less-heralded players are stepping up this season to take their chances and reduce the pressure on more-heralded teammates. The likes of Tigers Josh Scott and Carl Nicholson, and Roosters Callum Wilkie and Stephen Tahana have been at the forefront on some impressive team efforts and can hold a real key here. Glenelg appears to have a couple more second-level players capable of swinging the momentum here in a very close encounter.TIP: Glenelg 1-12

soccerJob not done yetT

he job is not finished for Adelaide United as it heads to this week’s A-League grand final at Adelaide Oval, needing to bring

home the one trophy the club is yet to hold.

The Reds can put past disappointment behind by beating the Western Sydney Wanderers in front of a vociferous home crowd on Sunday.

The top-two sides are again coming together for the season’s showcase encounter.

The key to Adelaide’s chances will be its defensive actions in keeping the Wanderers at bay while also creating opportunities of its own.

The Reds are recognised as the most defensive in the league as far as letting opposition goals in this season, but Sunday will be different as one lapse could prove costly.

Western Sydney will be hungry for its own success as well, having been runners-up in both 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons.

It will not want to let another go by either, which should ensure a top contest awaits.

The two sides last met in Adelaide in round two when the Reds were struggling to find their feet under new coach at the time and now Coach of the Year Guillermo Amor but eked out a 1-all draw.

Since then there have been two other clashes at Pirtek Stadium for dour nil-all draws on both occasions.

However, the Wanderers have shown that their scoring capabilities are much better than those results suggest from more recent performances.

They won’t give in as revealed by their comeback effort in last week’s semi-final against Brisbane Roar in which they were 0-3 down before gaining their grand final berth with a fifth goal late in extra-time to win 5-4.

Pacy winger Romeo Castelen, who scored a hat-trick last week, will need close attention from Adelaide. But Amor must also be mindful of the Wanderers talent right across the park such as fellow strikers Mark Bridge and

Brendon Santalab along with midfielder Mitch Nichols who can be just as damaging in front of goal.

Then there is also creative former Red Dario Vidosic who could be explosive off the bench.

Adelaide United’s semi-final hero Bruce Djite has declared the side’s “family” feeling and team-first ethos will drive it to title success.

“This family will beat any team any day,” he said.

“It’s a competitive advantage and it takes years to build.

“It doesn’t matter who we face on Sunday, I know they are not as tight as we are.

“Everyone does their job and that helps the team win.”

That team closeness will be a crucial factor in limiting its opponent’s attacking prowess.

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic will definitely have all his players ready for the clash and they will certainly be confident after last week.

However, the Reds will be looking to take advantage of any cracks in their opponent’s armour which did reveal some defensive errors that let the Roar in last week.

Western Sydney is vulnerable down back which must be exploited by the home side when the opportunities present.

Reds defender Michael Marrone will make up a crucial component of Adelaide United’s back four that have been tight for several weeks now and will need to be so again.

Marrone could be assigned the task of restricting Castelen’s influence on Sunday.

“We’re excited and we know that we have to enjoy these moments because they don’t come around too often, especially playing at home,” he said.

“We’ll be ready and prepare in the best way that we can for the Wanderers.

“There’s been a really good response from the team heading into this match already, and we’ll be looking at using the strong momentum we have gathered to get that last victory of the season.

“We’ve been in the position where no-one wanted to know us eight or nine games into the season, so we’re going to enjoy it all.

“But our story is not done yet.”

The sea of Red at Adelaide Oval on Sunday will make waves and hopefully we’re celebrating the club’s first A-League championship at the finish.

Go United!

It was an eventful Friday night at University Oval last week as the home side showered itself with its first win of the new season.

As the lights went out and sprinklers came on during the last quarter, Adelaide University had its opposition’s measure to run out worthy 23-point winners.

Nick Beneke and Will and Seb Paynter soaked up the pressure instilled by Henley to guide the Blacks home.

They will be hoping to black out their opponents again this week and ensure the duck egg stays alongside Unley Mercedes Jets name.

The Jets will be looking for some reprieve from having to play both of last year’s grand finalists first up in their inaugural top flight journey.

After testing their two more fancied outfits, they will no doubt be looking forward to meeting a side on a more level basis on Saturday.

For their recent opponents, it is time for the 2015 grand final rematch.

Payneham Norwood Union will be eager to make a statement early in the season for the rest of the competition to worry about.

Pierce Seymour put in another stellar display backing up his round one performance for the Falcons while Mack Haynes and David Aston were prolific contributors.

Rostrevor OC last week by just seven points after being up for most of the day.

Despite being jumped at the outset, ROCs rallied to keep their opponents within reach and finally got on top late to earn a crucial two points in their first victory of the season.

Charlie O’Malley, Anthony Medhurst and Oliver Wilkie have got the ball rolling now so expect them to highlight their qualities to be a premiership threat from here on.

Rostrevor OC will be out at Largs Reserve on Saturday to add further misery to a winless Port District.

It must be top-of-the-table weekend as Tea Tree Gully and Prince Alfred OC are in line

for top billing at Park 9 on Saturday in what should be a classic contest.

The Gullies were ruthless in disposing of Port District by 79 points last week and the Reds outclassed Salisbury North after the main break to record a comfortable 58-point victory.

Another tough physical encounter can be guaranteed between these two willing clubs which may favour the visitors in Tea Tree Gully but Prince Alfred OC is a really fit unit that may be able to outrun its opponents.

Usual suspects Alex McKay, Adam Cockshell Connor Elphick and Trent Melville from the Gullies and Cameron Graetz, Adam Perryman, James Dalwood and James Thomas from the Reds will have major input in determining the outcome.

While the Hawks took a 13-point advantage into half-time, they struggled to maintain it in the second half which is an area coach Gavin Chaplin will be looking for his players to put in a four-quarter effort against Henley this week.

With its first win on the board, Rostrevor OC could begin showing its premiership qualities from here on. Photo: Jayson Vowles

Vili’s Division 3

Broadview has had its points removed from its first round victory following an alleged breach of the APPS regulations.

It had been assessed by the league that the club had played players over its allocated points distribution which affects the number of recruits a club can play in any one week.

Broadview officials are considering an appeal into the loss of points and percentage on the basis of differing interpretations of the complex system but are not allowing it to distract its on-field direction of still achieving success this year.

The Tigers, especially Scott Burnett and Matthew Schmidt, responded with a determined effort to defeat Portland last week by 29 points to in effect get their season started.

While the club hopes a favourable resolution

Gepps Cross and Seaton Ramblers, both Rams and sitting on one win, look set for a keen contest at Duncan Fraser Reserve

on Saturday. The Gepps rams enjoyed a solid 10-goal win against Kilburn last week with Joshua Bald (six goals), Brodie Hudson and Ashley Benz among the best. Seaton Ramblers fell 18 points short against Walkerville at home with Callann Annett, Daniel Polanski (four goals) and Rocco Rugari among the best. The home ground swings it to Gepps by 12-26 points.

Flinders Park has enjoyed a solid start to the season with three wins, this week meeting Plympton at home. The Reds set up their 17-point win against Athelstone with a strong third quarter. Daniel Blythe, Joel Baldwin and Chad Comitogianni (three goals) led the way. Plympton recorded 30 scoring shots but lost to Golden Grove by 36 points with Jack Hoad,

Nicholas Webster and James Vanderhaak starring. The home side by 44-62 points.

Golden Grove and Mitcham should go in to their game at Harpers Field with confidence. The Kookaburras’ best in their winning game against Plympton were Todd Sheppard, Oliver Graham and Joshua Ingram. Mitcham, although it lost its first game of the season last week to Pembroke Old Scholars by 37 points, saw good games from Daniel Hardy, Simon Tucker and Ben Geytenbeek (three goals). A close call but the Grove by 16-28 points.

Pembroke is unbeaten and and looks to have a decided edge against Kilburn at Haslam Oval. The Kings were too strong for Mitcham last week after kicking seven goals in the third quarter to set up a 37-point win. Fraser Pinkney, Ben Williams and Alexander Catford led the way. The Kings by 62-78 points.

Athelstone and Walkerville look evenly matched at Max Amber Sportsfield. The Raggies were in the match at half time against Flinders Park, fell away in the third before responding to go down by 17 points. Angus Owen, Scott Barabas and Luke Rander were among the Raggies’ best. Walkerville beat Seaton Ramblers away by 18 points with Ty Allen (two goals), Ryan Madden and Josh Partington standing tall. Again the home ground could be a factor with the Raggies tipped by 16-30 points.

can arise from its current predicament, its coaches and playing group are well focused on their next encounter against Scotch OC on Saturday.

That leaves St Peters OC, Old Ignatians and Modbury as the unbeaten sides after two weeks of competition.

The top two outfits meet this week in what should be an enthralling clash of college rivalries as SPOC hosts Old Iggies for leading title contender honours.

St Peters OC, led by Tom Butler and Michael Mittiga, easily dispatched Gaza by a whopping 101 points last week.

Old Ignatians coach Jeremy Cini has his troops playing a well-known contested style which is reaping success at present.

His side, in particular Will Abbott and Jacob de Poi seemed to have everything in control

at the final break last week but relaxed in the last quarter.

The Hawks face Gaza at home on Saturday to keep their record intact after Blake Marshall and Matt Fogden steered them to a demanding 27-point victory against PHOS Camden but it took them until the second half to find their feet.

SMOSH West Lakes will be out to achieve a win in its own right after being handed the points for Broadview’s indiscretion.

The Lions are home against the Phantoms.

Nine News Division 5

One of the best matches of the season so far should be on show this week when Westminster Old Scholars host Eastern

Park. The Dragons are on top with three wins, last week beating Kenilworth by 29 points away. Scott Blesing led the charge for the Dragons, while Daniel Wakelin and Ben Fisher (three goals) were solid. Eastern Park conceded 16.10 against Pooraka but still won by 70 points at home, the teams sharing 15 goals between them in the last quarter. Shawn Mansell was outstanding for the Demons with 11 goals, while Chris Knapp and Bradley Woodward (five goals) also stood tall. The Dragons could have the edge at Glandore Oval but not by much, 12-22 points.

Hope Valley and Kenilworth will be hoping their fortunes turn for the better when they

Greenacres, right in the middle of a tight Division 5 competition where sides are still working out their place in the title race.

The Dragons are showing finals’ qualities early in the season but must repeat those efforts against top sides to really prove themselves.

They get that chance on Saturday against Smithfield sits just above them on the ladder making it a telling contest as well.

Peter Smith and Jarrad Clark-Rantasa will need to be at their best again though to contend with the powerful Panthers.

Smithfield is good at pushing aside up-and-coming contenders with the likes of Scott Webber and Daniel Marston imposing themselves as they did in their side’s serviceable 36-point win over CBCOC last week.

Lockleys will be ruing missing opportunities last week in its shattering one-point loss to Blackfriars OS in the top-of-the-table encounter.

The game lived up to expectations with both sides unwilling to give up their unbeaten status without a fight.

Battlelines drawn for Dragons, Demons

Dragons ready to fire

BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Scores were level for practically the last five minutes of the contest after the Demons had kicked 4.1 into the breeze and held their opponents goal-less with it. But it was to no avail as the Hounds scrambled a point with only 10 seconds remaining and no time for the home side to respond.

A lack of rotations on the bench hurt Lockleys in the last term so it was a creditable performance and it would welcome the rematch later in the season and potential finals battles to come.

This week the Demons host CBCOC while Blackfriars OS head to Elizabeth.

The Eagles are surprisingly winless at present, along with Pulteney, which shows the competitiveness of the competition.

Glenunga kept Elizabeth entrenched at the base of the ladder to achieve its first win of the season.

The Rams had things mostly their own way, before a slight fade-out in the final term but the contest was done then.

Glenunga’s Tim Mitchell, Guy Ward and co will take much-needed confidence to Rosewater on Saturday.

The Bulldogs, coming off a disappointing loss to Hectorville, are sure to put in more of an effort this week.

The Hounds kept their opposition to just one goal up to three quarter-time after which Rosewater began to give a bit of a yelp, reeling the deficit back to 26 points at the finish.

Hectorville’s Dylan Kahl and Josh Ingall would not have been happy to give up such a sizeable margin so Pulteney could be in for some punishment this week.

meet at Hope Valley. Both sides sit near the bottom of the ladder after four rounds. Hope Valley had a bye last week while Kenilworth fell to top side Westminster Old Scholars by 29 points, Nicholas Chesser (three goals), Davin Natt and James Siemering were among the best. Hope Valley can just get home by 8-20 points.

Pooraka and Edwardstown renew old rivalries when they met at Lindblom Park. The Bulls sit seventh and went down to Eastern Park by 70 points last week, despite kicking 16.10. Adam Nitschke, Tyson Barnes and Frank Timpano played well for the Bulls. The Towns had to fight hard all day to hold out Salisbury by 12 points at Edwardstown after leading by seven points at half time. Colby Blyth starred with seven goals, while Brinley Duggan and Toby

Case stood tall. Not much in this but Towns can get home by 14-26 points.

Salisbury and Colonel Light Gardens meet in an intriguing second versus fourth contest at Salisbury Oval. The Magpies battled all day to just fall to Edwardstown last week with Jay Mansfield, Nathan Kennedy and Brett Herrmann showing the way. Colonel Light Gardens has shown good touch since being promoted, last week finishing strongly to go down to North Haven by 15 points after trailing by 31 points at quarter time. This week looks tough for the visitors with Salisbury getting the nod by 20-34 points.

North Haven has the bye.

Fitzroy and Woodville South lock horns this week at Fitzroy Sport Club with the Lions keen to bounce back from their

92-point loss to Brahma Lodge on Anzac Day. The Lions couldn’t contain their hosts, going down 23.23 (161) to 11.3 (69). Woodville South recorded a solid 35-point win against Houghton Districts with Alex Dankiewicz, Nathan Pearce and Laurence Gosling among the best. The Cats by 46-62 points.

Houghton Districts hosts Adelaide Lutheran in a fifth versus bottom contest. The Raiders saw good games from Dave Keetch, Jason Dolan and Jesse Schulz in their loss to Woodville South last week. Adelaide Lutheran lost at home to Mawson Lakes by 29 points with Jeremy Borgas, Mark McFarlane and Christopher Koenig (three goals) among the best. The home side by 18-30 points.

Mawson Lakes has the home ground but the contract will be tough against top side West Croydon. The Saints beat Adelaide Lutheran last week by 29 points with Nathan Delbridge,

A second win in a row has consolidated a nice gap from finals challengers on the Division 7 ladder for Central United.

The fifth-placed Bulldogs will look to build on a percentage when they face North Pines this week.

Central United endured a tight contest against Adelaide University last week but held strong when it counted.

Josh McKenna continues to be a target in the goal front, kicking five, in his side’s heart-pounding six-point triumph over the Blacks.

Adelaide University needs to find a win soon to stay in finals contention but it will be tough it against undefeated Unley Mercedes Jets this week.

The Jets looked to have a difficult assignment on their hands last week with Payneham Norwood Union taking the accolades in the first half of their clash.

However, the visitors slowly gained the momentum after the break to swing the game in their favour before really getting on top in the final quarter.

Josh Zweck, Michael Bellifimini and Alex

Darren King, Lachlan Kennett and Ivan Novosel (eight goals) among the stars. West Croydon is the only unbeaten side last week beating Ingle Farm by 66 points. Nathaniel Khan, Nathan Dickenson and Nicolas Symons led the way. Another win for the Hawks it seems by 38-52 points.

Ingle Farm and Mitchell Park clash in a second versus eighth match up at Rowe Park. Hard to go past the Bulldogs by 22-38 points.

Trinity Old Scholars has the home ground but Brahma Lodge is flying and can pounce again by 26-38 points.

Borghesan lifted their work rate to ensure their side would share its unbeaten position with just two other sides, Prince Alfred OC and Salisbury West.

The Reds are strong after a compelling 77-point victory over North Pines but they have the bye this week.

Jake Turner, Zac Matthews and Todd Andrews of the Crabs will hope to cause an upset after recording their second success of the year with a hard fought 10-point win over St Pauls OS last week.

In another tight tussle, they trailed for most of the second half but two late goals changed the game. The Saints will be trying to keep Payneham Norwood Union winless on Saturday.

FIVE POINT EXTRA

IT’s a jokeA LITTLE OLD MAN BOARDS A BUS with bowling balls in each of his front pockets. He sits down next to a beautiful young blonde lady and she can’t help but glance quizzically at the man’s bulging pockets. It was an uneasy few minutes before, finally, the little old man can take no more. “Bowling balls,” he nods reassuringly. The blonde seems a little shocked and continues to stare.Moments later, she says, “Does it hurt as much as tennis elbow?”

ONE DAY A RATHER INEBRIATED ice fisherman drilled a hole in the ice and peered into the hole and a loud voice said,“There are no fish down there.”He walked several yards away and drilled another hole and peered into the hole and again the voice said,“There’s no fish down there.”He then walked about 50 metres away and drilled another hole and again the voice said,“There’s no fish down there.” He looked up into the sky and asked, “God, is that you?”“No, you idiot,” the voice said, “it’s the rink manager.”

Donald set to become Aussie bowling coachC

ricket Australia looks set to announce former South African quick Allan Donald

as its next bowling coach on a short-term deal.

The former Proteas spearhead will oversee Australia’s bowlers on their tour of Sri Lanka later this month, before potentially filling the role in the summer series against South Africa, says News Corp Australia.

An appointment would be a massive coup for Australian cricket.

Donald took 330 wickets in a Test career which spanned 10 years, and helped the development of Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander as the lightning quick trio who took South Africa to the top of the Test rankings.

Donald has worked previously with Mitchell Starc in the IPL, and would play a key role in the careers

of Josh Hazlewood and James Pattinson as the transition of the Australian bowling group takes charge.

Cricket Australia is still working towards announcing a full-time replacement for Craig McDermott, who stepped down from the role of bowling coach after the World T20 in India.

Jason Gillespie remains the No.1 target for the spot. However that would require luring him away from his position as head coach of English county club Yorkshire.

Meanwhile, Australian bowler John Hastings will be replaced by fellow Victorian quick Scott Boland for Australia’s one-day international tour of the West Indies after succumbing to an ankle injury.
