“Jousting” in Asturias

• Jousting” is a tradition in Asturias.• Tens of riders participate in them and each of the races

is celebrated in all of the Principality in a journey from town to town to participate in two or up to three trials each weekend.

• They go at a gallop on the horse and place their pole or pen on the grommet of the ribbon, and without it falling to the other side of the makeshift field.

• The objective is to take the greatest • number of ribbons possible, given the• degree of difficulty.

The race of the Madrenas (Asturian wooden shoes)

• The goal is to arrive first with the madrenas on.

• They use madrenas, which are a traditional Asturian shoe. They are shoes made from one piece of wood, closed, and with a high heel. All participants line up at the starting line with their madrenas on. A voice shouts, ready, go! And they begin the race, trying to finish without ever losing their madrena.

“Panoyas” Race: THIS IS THE GAME

• Among the different popular/traditional Asturian games, that are passed down from generation to generation, we have the race of

panoyas (ears of corn). Consists of collecting and carrying ten ears of corn, one by one, placed one meter apart, in a basket, as fast as possible. The first to finish wins.

In realiry, this game is usually played at school festivals, such

as the Amaguestu (Asturian Harvest Festival).

THE FROG: The game consists of a frog made of metal with an open mouth put on a drawer, and also has two holes, a mill and two bridges. Each player has ten round metal pieces, and the objective is to introduce the chips in the mouth of the frog. The score depends on the area, usually in the frog ten points, five points in the mill, two on each bridge and a point on each hole, but may vary in each drawer with you play you play with.

La cucaña“La cucaña” has different names. The origin of La Cucaña is in the ritual of placing a large tree trunk in a public place of the people during the holiday of spring and harvest. This tree is known by the name "May" or "maya. It allows:

Contest of the Mine Builders• This sport consists of placing logs of wood which are

mounted to a frame. The team is made up of a worker and his helper, that have 40 minutes to make a mine box. To participate in the contest you must be a mine worker and have reached the qualifications of chopper, miner first grade, or driller.

• Grading: the perfecting of the work, the face of the work, the sets and measures, the plumb, and time (if you exceed 50 minutes, you are eliminated)

LOS BOLOS (BATIENTE)Bowling

• In the past, the bowling courts served as a meeting place for the people of the village, as there were also bars near each bowling court in Asturian villages. In Asturias there are several types of bowling games. Bowling is a game which consists of throwing a round ball from a spot to a marker in order to knock down the largest number of pins in the least throws possible.

• Scoring is done in the following way:• If a ball passes outside or within the “road” and does not

knock down pins, you obtain no points. The ciebu, which is a wooden fence protected with rubber encloses the area: The pins that go over the higher part of the “ciebu” are worth 50 points each..and so on.

• This event consists of carrying an egg or another roundest object on a spoon and racing to the finish line without dropping the egg or running while the egg is out of the spoon.
