Physical Education and Sports Studies is one ofthe largest subject areas within the single andcombined Honours programme at NewmanUniversity College with research forming anintegral part of its scholarly activity.

The Physical Education and Sports Studies coursesprovide a broad, yet in-depth study of the majordisciplines within sports and exercise science. Theapproach is one of applied scientific enquiry, makingclear links between laboratory based studies and theimpact of sporting performance from beginner toelite level athletes across a range of sports.

A feature of physical education and sports studies atNewman is the excellent relationship between staffand students. Staff know students on an individualbasis, and students are given the opportunity toimprove their understanding of sport and exercisescience by participating in research with staff. Thiscollaborative approach leads to high quality workbeing produced by students when they undertakeindividual projects.

Courses available:• Single Honours Sports Studies - BASES

endorsed

• Combined Honours Sports Studies(major, joint, minor)

• Undergraduate Primary Initial TeacherEducation specialising in PE

• Postgraduate Secondary PhysicalEducation (PGCE)

• MSc/MA Physical Education and Sports Studies

Developing applied knowledgeTo aid students’ understanding of sport and exercisescience, work placements are embedded in allcourses, allowing students to gain relevant, graduatelevel experience in the sports industry and refine theircareer choices.

Newman also works closely with a range of sportsteams providing sports science support to junior leveland elite sports people including Coventry Blaze icehockey team, Trojan mixed martial arts team,Lordswood and Solihull basketball academies,Warwickshire hurling team, Great Britain U-17 ladiesbasketball squad as well as a number of individualathletes. This work involves testing and monitoring ofdifferent components of fitness key to their chosensports across the training year. This information theninforms the training and conditioning programs of theindividuals/teams.

A number of professional coaches also deliverpractical elements across the different programmes. In addition, level two and three coaches work with arange of focus sports at Newman includingbasketball, football, hockey and rugby.

Sports facilitiesIn recent years Newman has invested significantlyin the facilities for sports students, including a newsand-based artificial outdoor sports pitch forfootball and hockey.

The facilities available for sports studentsincludes:

• Squash Courts (2) • Fitness Suite• Sports Hall• Gymnasium• All-weather Pitch

Human Performance Laboratory This specialist area provides facilities for laboratorypractical sessions and teaching exercisephysiology and biomechanics. The specialistequipment used for exercise physiology, psychology, motor learning and biomechanics islocated in this laboratory.

Bodpod RoomA purpose built room where environmentalconditions are well controlled to ensure accuratemeasurement of body composition. The room alsostores the metalyser and oxycon pro gas analysisequipment.

Fitness Assessment Suite

The fitness assessment suite is a specialist roomused for conducting physiological assessmentswith a range of populations including individual andteam athletes, students as well as paediatricpopulations. This room is also used for teachingand learning purposes (laboratory practicals anddemonstrations) in exercise physiology, psychology, biomechanics and motor learning. Thesuite contains a range of specialist equipmentincluding a Douglas bag system with gas analyser, blood lactate analysers, Bassin anticipation timerand Quattro Jump force platform. This room alsocontains a Woodway treadmill, numerous Monarchcycle ergometers and Concept II rowers.

Teaching and assessmentIn PE and Sports Studies students are taught usinga variety of methods including lectures, workshops, seminars, practical sessions and problem-basedlearning. Similarly, assessment methods vary frommodule to module and include a combination ofwritten examinations, presentations, practical testsand assessed coursework. Coursework mayinclude a working portfolio, laboratory manuals, journal articles, reports and essays. Contact hoursvaries by module but typically around 30 hours.

BSc Sports Studies

The Single Honours Sports Studies course isendorsed by the British Association of Sport andExercise Science (BASES). This endorsementindicates that the course provides the opportunity todevelop knowledge and skills that BASES considersessential to enter into the profession. This may bepostgraduate study, supervised experience, work inelite sport or in a health environment, amongstothers. The endorsement scheme considers thecurriculum, practical experience gained by studentsand resources available. At least 10% of studenttime is spent in each of the sub-disciplines ofbiomechanics, physiology and psychology, and atleast half of their total time is spent in these threeareas. 5% of student time is dedicated tointerdisciplinary study and 5% is devoted to bothresearch methods and independent study in the fieldof Sport and Exercise Science.

This course provides an insight into the scienceunderpinning sporting performance. Within thecourse, there is the opportunity for students to selectmodules based on personal interest and potentialcareer choices; for example, work in the health andfitness industry, teaching PE, coaching and sportsdevelopment.

“ Studying at Newman on the Sports Studies degree course can only be described as first class - not only

from the class size point of view, but the personality of the staff and the course enabled me to settle in

and really engage my love of sport. Within my second year Spring term I undertook a placement at

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. The work placement had a massive effect on my outlook as a career

and has contributed in helping me to choose a career pathway as a football coach. After leaving

Newman, the combination of work experience and knowledge gained through my degree has been

fundamental in my career where I have completed a year of FE lecturing with Acade, my football

players at Sheffield United FC. My current career roles are now as a sports coach within two primary

schools teaching P.E curriculum lessons, football coach within a regional football skills development

centre and assistant manager to the Doncaster Rovers Belles Reserves - where I work on a weekly basis

with a range of female England football players. In a million years I wouldn’t have expected to go into

such exciting and challenging work environments - where only the experiences, relationships and

knowledge gained while at Newman has lead to these opportunities.

Joseph Burton Sports Studies graduate ”

All degrees at Newman include a work placementelement enabling students to link their academicstudies to real-life scenarios, which Newmanbelieves contributes to it having one of the bestgraduate employment rates.

A key part of the sports studies courses is theopportunity to undertake a work-related learningexperience with vocational relevance. Studentshave enjoyed placements with West BromwichAlbion FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC

Work Placementwhich has led to paid employment. Workplacement is an important element of the coursebecause it develops students’ ability to work in avariety of fields after graduation. Past graduatesnow work in sports coaching, teaching, sportsdevelopment, sports and leisure management, sports science, the armed forces and police, andsports promotion.

Students will choose six taught modules inaddition to a module in Research Methods.Students are therefore able to developspecialisation while gaining knowledge andunderstanding across a range of topics in thearea of Physical Education and Sports Studies.

Entry requirements

An entry requirement of 2:1 in a relevantdiscipline is required to ensure that studentshave the underpinning knowledge and academicskills to complete the programme successfully. However, students with lower formalqualifications but with relevant vocationalexperiences will be considered on an individualbasis.

STUDENTProfiles

Whilst on placement at WestBromwich Albion FC I was able toexperience a whole variety ofactivities, including coaching inschools and education sessions beingdelivered within the educationcentres, whilst travelling around theWest Midlands to schools shadowingand sometimes leading sessions, delivered to children from year 2 upto college age from a variety ofbackgrounds and cultures. Myplacement enabled me to gain somevaluable time and experience in awork related setting. This can onlyhelp my career prospects withineducation and sports coaching, which I’m hoping will be a field Iwill be working in once I havegraduated.
