RULES OF SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES Players must respect the rules of

the sport. Players who don’t put themselves

and others at risk. If the nature of the game is

dangerous (boxing, football etc) then there is going to be stringent rules to minimise the chances of serious injury.

RULES OF SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES

Official and coaches have a responsibility to ensure that players under their control participate in the right spirit and don’t break the rules.

When the environment can be dangerous to the athletes wellbeing, there are rules to protect them eg: the heat policy in tennis.

MODIFIED RULES FOR CHILDREN

Modification of game rules for children has reduced the risk of injury to players.

New games have been developed that build on the basic skills of the original game eg: kanga cricket, minky, netta ball and mod league.

Also there are minor changes to rules in adult games that are implemented at different age groups eg: cricket, under 19’s are restricted to the amount of overs bowled so they have enough rest therefore preventing overuse injuries.

MATCHING OF OPPONENTS A child’s readiness for sporting

competitions can be measured according to:

- Age- Size- Maturity- Social Skills- Ability to follow instructions

MATCHING OF OPPONENTS What should be taken into account

when matching opponents?-Variations in size and strength- Motor skills Children need to be matched to

develop skills and have fun rather than receive an injury, be disappointed and drop out of sport.

MATCHING OF OPPONENTS Coaches and sports officials need to

take into account that children grow and develop at different rates and that uneven competition can place the competitiors at risk of injury especially if one is stronger than the other.

To address this issue some contact sports have allowed players of smaller physiques to play under age.

MATCHING OF OPPONENTS Grading systems have also been

implemented to promote even competition and reduces the risk of injury but allows enjoyment and enthusiasm.

However, in some areas where there are not enough teams and individuals this system cannot be implemented eg: small towns like Coonamble.
