Minus two key players, the Coyotes were faced with an enough together challenge on the glass. The result was a solid start in that area and a rough finish in Saturday afternoon’s 87-53 loss to the No. 19- ranked Huskers at brand new Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lin- coln, Neb. “We were a little con- cerned with how we would adjust, and I don’t think we handled it particularly well,” said USD head coach Amy Williams, making her head coaching debut at her alma mater. “We had to have some players step into different roles.” The Coyotes (7-6) were without sophomore starter Heidi Hoff (knee) and sopho- more reserve Margaret Mc- Cloud (family matter), who combine to average 10 re- bounds. In that stat Saturday, Ne- braska (9-2) finished with a significant 46-33 edge — by far USD’s worst finish on the glass this season. “We knew they’d be tough, but not having Marge and Heidi, those are two of our best rebounders,” said Coy- ote senior post Polly Harring- ton, who had seven points and five rebounds. “But we tried to come in with the mindset to rebound as hard as we could. “It did hurt us a little bit, though.” Replacing Hoff in the start- ing lineup for USD was junior Raeshel Contreras, who had a team high 17 points. And be able to adjust and find people that can go be rebounders.” The Coyotes could have had a lineup full of McClouds and Hoffs and might not have made a difference, especially early. Nebraska started the game on an 11-0 run and used a 5-point swing (a three- pointer followed by two free throws after a USD foul) late in the first half to take a 40-20 cushion into the break. “We were a little gun shy early, and not quite ready to step up and make plays we needed to make,” Williams said.
