No. 19 Huskers Cruise Past USDBY JEREMY [email protected]
LINCOLN, Neb. — Not thatit would have made much ofa difference against the BigTen Conference favorites, butthe University of SouthDakota women had to tinkerwith their lineup.
Minus two key players, the Coyotes were faced withan enough together challengeon the glass.
The result was a solidstart in that area and a roughfinish in Saturday afternoon’s87-53 loss to the No. 19-ranked Huskers at brand newPinnacle Bank Arena in Lin-coln, Neb.
“We were a little con-cerned with how we wouldadjust, and I don’t think wehandled it particularly well,”said USD head coach AmyWilliams, making her headcoaching debut at her almamater.
“We had to have someplayers step into differentroles.”
The Coyotes (7-6) werewithout sophomore starterHeidi Hoff (knee) and sopho-more reserve Margaret Mc-Cloud (family matter), whocombine to average 10 re-bounds.
In that stat Saturday, Ne-braska (9-2) finished with asignificant 46-33 edge — byfar USD’s worst finish on theglass this season.
“We knew they’d be tough, but not having Marge andHeidi, those are two of ourbest rebounders,” said Coy-ote senior post Polly Harring-ton, who had seven pointsand five rebounds. “But wetried to come in with themindset to rebound as hardas we could.
“It did hurt us a little bit, though.”
Replacing Hoff in the start-ing lineup for USD was juniorRaeshel Contreras, who had ateam high 17 points. And
without McCloud, the Coy-otes were considerablysmaller off the bench in an ef-fort to grab rebounds.
“We knew that was goingto be the stat that would giveus a chance to stay competi-tive,” Williams said.
In the first half, at least, the Coyotes stayed right withthe taller Huskers on theglass — both teams had 19rebounds at halftime.
Nebraska eventually fin-ished with a 46-33 edge, though, and also dominatedin second chance looks. TheHuskers out-scored USD 16-3on second chance points.
“That’s critical,” Williamssaid. “We’re going to have tofind a way to rebound evenwithout Margaret in thelineup. And be able to adjustand find people that can gobe rebounders.”
The Coyotes could havehad a lineup full of McCloudsand Hoffs and might not havemade a difference, especiallyearly.
Nebraska started thegame on an 11-0 run and useda 5-point swing (a three-pointer followed by two freethrows after a USD foul) latein the first half to take a 40-20cushion into the break.
“We were a little gun shyearly, and not quite ready tostep up and make plays weneeded to make,” Williamssaid.
And that was about all thedrama the game provided. The Huskers — thanks to 10three-pointers — shot 50 per-cent after halftime and theCoyotes were limited to 29percent for the game.
Sophomore Tia Hemilleradded 11 points and six re-bounds for the Coyotes, while junior Nicole Seekamphad 11 points, five reboundsand four assists.
“We gave up too manythrees, and we didn’t re-
