B B SECTION SECTION MAY 13, 2009 ON THE ROAD A.W. DORSEY Tribune Sports Writer Diamond Trojans to Face West Laurens When Peach County defeated LaGrange last week in the first round of the GHSA playoffs, it meant a new opponent would be coming to the Valley for the second round. That opponent is none other than our old rivals from down in Laurens County, the West Laurens Raiders. The Raiders got the shot by defeating some more old friends of the Trojans, the Mary Persons Bulldogs from Forsyth. The Raiders also had to play three games before taking the final game on Saturday. West Laurens is 21-8 overall, 9-3 in region regular season and 2-1 in the playoffs. Peach on the other hand is 18-9 overall, 12-2 in the region and 2-1 in the playoffs. West Laurens is a solid ball team, led by power-hitting outfielder Davey Hartley and Senior pitcher A. J. Wright; both bring a lot to the table. To counter these, Peach will have to play near perfect base- ball. If you have seen Peach play, you will note that we too have a good ball team and with some good Senior leadership, we should be able to take the Raiders down. The way the playoffs are bracketed this year, if Peach continues to win we will play all games at home except the Championship Game. Come out Wednesday and watch the Trojans and Raiders resume where we left off a couple of years ago. At this writing the time of the game had not been determined, but will be at 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. If we get it before then, we will post it some where in the paper or you can check with the school. LET’S GO TROJANS Spring Football Practice Report: Trojans Showing Speed; Taylor on the Mend August cannot be far away. Spring football practice has begun. That can only mean one thing. The pigskins will soon be flying. When I was there on Monday there were prob- ably 75 young men working their you know whats off. It was almost like the real thing, coaches screaming instructions, and getting in a player’s face if he didn’t do something right. When I was there, they were working on some fundamen- tal stuff that will only help them get better when the Friday nights get real. It is too early to make any kind of prediction as to the record we will put up this year, but based on what I saw, we should do all right. We have good speed overall, especially when Travis Richmond gets the ball in his hands. The report I am getting is that Patrick Taylor will resume the quarterbacking chores and we can only hope he avoids an injury. Lamar Zanders will assume his post as wide receiv- er. The kicking game is in the capable hands – or should I say feet – of Rustin Evatt. On the offensive line you will see big Telvin “Juicy” Zanders and Tevarus Ages. On the defen- sive side you will see Courtney Mathis and Randolph Williams who is, in my humble opinion, one of the most improved Trojans. While Richmond gets the ball for long yardage, LaBrandon Johnson will get the call when we need just a yard or two. We don’t have any monster- size guys like we did a couple of years ago when Sam Chester and Deon Armstrong wore the black and gold, but what we lack in size we will make up with finesse. Plan on getting your tickets early so you will not miss any electrifying action that the Trojans will give you on Friday nights. Dugout Club to Hold Chicken Q. The Peach County Dugout Club will hold a fundraising BBQ chicken dinner on May 16 between 11 a. m. and 2 p.m. The plates are $7 each and will have BBQ chicken, slaw, bread and chips. The dinner place will be at the Byron Healthcare building on Highway 49, close to Giant Foods.
