HONOLULU—The No. 20 University of Hawai’i women’s volleyball team opens its 2017 season with the Texaco Rainbow Wahine Invitational this weekend from August 25-27. Competing in the high-powered, three-day tourney are Marquette, No. 22 San Diego and No. 13 UCLA. The ‘Bows open against Marquette on Friday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai’i returns five starters and 12 letterwinners from last year’s squad—including all-Big West first team players Emily Maglio, Savanah Kahakai, and Norene Iosia. It will be the first time in 42 seasons that Dave Shoji will not be at the helm of the Rainbow Wahine program. First year head coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos will begin a new era this season. Ah Mow-Santos is only the third head coach in program history. She is considered one of the most decorated players in UH history, with an impressive resume that includes two first-team All-America selections, three Olympic Games appearances, and is a member of the school’s Sports Circle of Honor and Hawai’i Sports Hall of Fame. Last year, the Rainbow Wahine finished the season ranked No. 17 in the final AVCA coaches poll after posting a 23-6 overall record. Hawai’i captured their second-straight Big West title and 25th overall conference crown with a 15-1 BWC record. The ‘Bows competed in their 35th NCAA tournament where they defeated USC in the first round but fell to Minnesota in the second round in Minneapolis.

Opponents This Week...All three opponents in this years Invitational competed in last year’s NCAA tourney. Marquette advanced to its sixth-straight NCAA tournament after finishing 23-9 overall and second in the Big East Conference. It will be UH’s first meeting against the Golden Eagles. San Diego was ranked all season long in the AVCA poll and finished at No. 22 after posting a 24-6 overall record. Hawai’i is 3-1 against the Toreros all-time but fell in its most recent meeting vs. USD in five sets in 2013. UCLA recorded a 27-7 overall record last year and placed third in the powerful PAC-12. The Bruins advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals where they fell to Minnesota in four. UCLA finished the season ranked No. 6 and UH’s all-time record against the Bruins is tied at 37-37.

Ah Mow-Santos Era BeginsRobyn Ah Mow-Santos will compete in her first game as the head coach of the Rainbow Wahine this week as she takes over the reins from Dave Shoji whose legendary career spanned the last 42 seasons. Ah Mow-Santos was two-time first team All-American setter under Shoji. She played trom 1993-96 and led the ‘Bows to a 66-4 combined record including the NCAA Championship match in 1996 during her collegiate career. She is just the third head coach in the 43-year history of Rainbow Wahine volleyball. Following her collegiate career, Ah Mow-Santos went on to compete for the U.S. Women’s National Team from 1999-2008 and was regarded as one of the top international setters in the world. She was the team’s starting setter in the 2000 and ‘04 Olympic Games and in 2008, she helped guide Team USA to a silver-medal finish at the Beijing Olympics. She also played professionally in Italy, Portugal and Switzerland. While playing for Volero Zurich in Switzerland, she earned the Swiss League’s most valuable player award. At the conclusion of her playing career, Ah Mow-Santos was a student assistant for two seasons as she continued to pursue her bachelor’s degree and later served as Shoji’s assistant coach from 2011-15. Shoji finished his career with a 1,202-204-1 career record during his career. The 1,202 wins is the second most in NCAA history. He led UH to four national championships (1979, ‘82, 82, ‘87) and 25 conference titles. Under Shoji UH re-ceived 86 All-American selections, eight national Players of the Year awards, and five Olympians. He was named National Coach of the Year five times and was named Coach of the NCAA 25th Anniversary Team.

Hawai‘i Ranked No. 20 in AVCA Preseason Coaches PollHawai’i was tabbed No. 20 in the AVCA Division I Preseason Coaches Top 25 poll. The Rainbow Wahine concluded 2016 with a 23-6 record and No. 17 final ranking in Dave Shoji’s 42nd and final season. Texas is the preseason No. 1 edging out defending national champion Stanford, who received more first place votes than the Longhorns (35-25). UH has been ranked in the every preseason coaches poll since 1982. This year’s ranking marks the lowest since 1993 (#22) and only the second time the team has been selected No. 20 or lower in program history. The ‘Bows have been ranked 499 total times in the Top 25, which ranks them at No. 3 all-time in AVCA history.

UH Picked to Finish First in Big WestHawai’i was selected to capture its third straight Big West Conference championship in the women’s volleyball preseason poll as voted on by the BWC’s nine women’s volleyball head coaches. The Rainbow Wahine, who have gone a combined 31-1 en route to its last two regular-season titles, received six first-place votes and 78 points. Cal Poly received two first-place votes (71 points), while Long Beach State received the other first-place vote and 65 points to be slotted third. This year marks a new era as former UH All-American setter and assistant coach Robyn Ah-Mow Santos takes over the program following the retirement of legendary coach Dave Shoji. UH went 23-6 overall and 15-1 in the Big West in 2016. The Rainbow Wahine advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished 17th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) Poll.

Outside Hitters Looking to Fill VoidThis year’s outside hitters need to fill the void both offensively and defensively left by the graduation of two-time All-American and two-time Big West Player of the Year Nikki Taylor and All Big West first team player Annie Mitchem. Taylor was the team’s terminator the last two years. As a senior, Taylor led the league and Hawai’i with 4.54 kills per set, 0.61 service aces per set and 5.76 points (kills + blocks + aces) per set. She finished the regular season ranked No. 2 in the NCAA DI in aces per set; No. 5 in points per set; and No. 14 in kills per set. Taylor also led Hawai’i with 386 kills, 52 total aces, 490.0 total points, was second on the team with 97 blocks, and third on the squad with 196 digs. Her averages in kills, aces, digs (2.33), and blocks (1.15 p/set) were all career-highs. Upon returning after missing the first three weeks of the season, Mitchem came back with a vengance

Iosia Setting the Pace; Makes the U.S. Junior National TeamComing back after starting in 26 of 29 matches last year as a freshman for the Rainbow Wahine, setter Norene Iosia was able to distribute 971 assists. She was also second on the team with 31 service aces and 251 digs while also adding 53 total blocks. Iosia had a busy summer playing on the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team. She competed in the 2017 FIBA Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championships in Boca del Rio and Cordoba, Mexico. Iosia and MacKenzi Welsh (Michigan) were the two setters selected to the squad after being chosen from the 16-player training group from July 2-11 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Granato Selected to U.S. Collegiate TeamThis past summer, junior outside hitter McKenna Granato was selected to the U.S. Collegiate National Team-Minneapolis (CNT-Minneapolis). Granato trained and competed alongside 35 of the nation’s top collegiate volleyball players in Minneapolis, Minn. She was the lone representative of the Big West Conference. The CNT-Minneapolis squad, which was part of USA Volleyball’s High Performance pipeline, is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team, will train from June 22-26 at the University of Minnesota. Afterward, the athletes will be assigned to one of three 12-member teams and compete in a round-robin format at the Minneapolis Convention Center from June 27-30. Granato ws one of nine outside hitters on the roster. Last season as a UH sophomore, she was second on the team with 293 kills (2.9 kills per set) and third with 24 service aces. Granato notched 30 total blocks and 167 digs as a sopho-more for the Rainbow Wahine.

Kahakai Enters Senior Season In Control of Back RowSavanah Kahakai has been the starting libero for the Rainbow Wahine since her sophomore year. Now as a senior, Ah Mow-Santos is happy with how far she’s seen Kahakai come from when she coached her in club. Her court presence and ability to speak to the girls as a leader and run the court is what has landed her the role of starting libero. Kahakai started all 29 matches last season and became the 14th member of the Rainbow Wahine 1,000 career dig club. She enters 2017 with 1,001 career digs. As a junior she tied her career-high of 23 digs in a match four times and notched double-digit digs in 23 matches.

Maglio Leads the Middles With Quiet ConfidenceSenior Emily Maglio has impressed the Rainbow Wahine coaching staff since stepping into a starting role at middle hitter as a sophomore. She continues to strive to improve her game after earning AVCA All-America honorable mention and all-Big West first team honors last year. Maglio started every game last season, averaging a league high .400 hitting percentage with 133 total blocks. With Maglio’s work ethic, the coaching staff believes that she will once again be a solid force in the middle for the ‘Bows. She may also expand her role to play defense and play all the way around the six rotations. For her career, Maglio has put down 432 kills averaging 2.01 per set with 246 total blocks (18 solo) and 1.14 blocks per set. Maglio has played in 73 career matches during her collegiate career.
