The dream started over 50 years ago when my dad was a camp director and I was a camper. From the time I was five I dreamed of becoming a camp director. I fell in love with camp at first sight. I loved how it looked, how it smelled, what I got to do when I got there, but most of all, I loved the way it made me feel. As a kid, I would watch and learn from everything my dad did as a camp director. In fact, it was ultimately his decision not to retire for over 50 years that led me to Ramapo. You see, after college I got to work along side my dad for 12 years. After that time I let my dad know I was ready to take over. However, to my surprise, he politely informed me that he had no intention to retire any time soon. Thus began my quest to find my own camp to own and run where I could be the director.

In November of 1990, my wife Michele (who I met at camp) and I risked everything we had to purchase Ramapo. Although the dream started 50+ years ago, it became a reality 25 years back with our first summer in 1991. At the end of that summer, a ten year old boy was telling me what an amazing summer he had. He let me know he was going to live the next ten months of school waiting for the two months of camp. It was that inspirational sentence that became our mantra “ten for two” (1042). Since that time, “ten for two” has been adopted throughout the camp industry by campers and staff alike. It also gave me the words that summed up how I felt about camp so many years ago. Today’s world is surely not the same as it was a quarter of a century ago. I believed very strongly in the power of camp when we first began Ramapo, but I believe in it even more now as children are growing up in a world where they are constantly connected to technology. Ramapo provides a unique, one-of-a-kind experience run by an amazing group of year-round camp professionals who are filled with more passion, enthusiasm, knowledge and heart than you will ever find in one organization. After all these years, I still love camp – how it looks, how it smells, what I get to do there, and how it makes me feel. But most importantly, I love how camp makes all of your children feel. Ramapo makes you feel good. It makes you feel confident. It makes you feel successful. It makes you feel happy. It makes you want to do the “ten for two.”

25 years is a long time and we proudly celebrate our silver anniversary as the owners of Ramapo. Silver is radiant. It is brilliant. It is everlasting. And it also describes what happened to the color of my hair over the 25 years. This summer is an extremely special one for Michele and I. Ramapo has been a favorite summer home for so many children, including our own. We came to Ramapo with one little girl named Lindsey and another one named Courtney came shortly thereafter. Ramapo helped us raise our own children. Both of our daughters grew up in camp like their dad and are now part of the future of Ramapo. And for the next 25 years, they will join us as the 3rd generation of Kulchins to be taking care of children.

And so, as our 25th summer begins, our year-round team at Ramapo is once again ready, willing, and able to lead our summer staff of superstars in giving your children the best summer of their lives.

We don’t want to bug you. . . As of today, Ramapo is a lice-free environment! In an attempt to keep it this way, we are asking for your help. As you know, schools and camps are prime targets for outbreaks of these annoying parasites. If your child contracts lice during camp, you must contact the camp office ImmedIAtely. lice can be quickly and easily treated, and we’re happy to provide you with any help you may need. At camp, we take a number of precautions to help prevent lice from spreading. Not only do we discourage the sharing of personal items, but at any activity where there is shared protective equipment (helmets), campers wear surgical hair nets as a barrier. this has proven to be an incredibly successful prevention method. If you have any questions regarding lice or would like a list of professional companies which deal with lice that we have found helpful in the past, please contact the Camp Office.

25 YEARS ASPapa Stu

For 25 years I have not only been the Assistant Director of Ramapo, but I have also been responsible for our International Staff that come from all over the world to enrich the summer experience of our Ramapo campers. The International Program started at Ramapo 25 years ago. Our very first summer we had 4 internationals, and today we have 26 international staff from over 10 different countries. Since I am responsible for their well-being while they are at Ramapo and far away from home, they decided that I would be their American “dad” and they would call me “Papa Stu.” I have had the opportunity to work with and learn about the varied cultures and countries they come from. I help them to have an understanding of camp and I give them some history of America. Over the years, we have had internationals who came for just one summer and never left. They are now part of our year-round team. Other internationals came for a summer, but ended up returning for several more. And so many internationals who came for just a summer experience, but found that their lives were so positively changed forever. The internationals leave Ramapo with what they call the Ramapo International Mantra – “Ramapo - The best summer of my life!” Our campers have the unique opportunity to learn from this extraordinary group of people and learn about the different cultures as well as countries they come from. Our campers get to witness firsthand that the world isn’t so big after all. I am fortunate to have been able to form so many friendships that I still stay in contact with today, and I receive more birthday and father’s day cards than anybody I know! The Ramapo experience truly extends well beyond our borders to the four corners of the world!
