Athletic Code of Conduct

Academic Requirements

All participants in athletic activities at Brunswick Middle Schools must meet academic eligibility requirements.

The program is twofold, with a credit check and minimum grade point requirement each 9 weeks.

A probationary program is available to those not meeting the minimum grade point requirements.

Must have received passing grades in a minimum of FIVE classes in the grading period immediately preceding in order to be eligible.

If passing 5 classes, you must have a 1.8 minimum grade point average for that grading period. They will be given an opportunity to participate in a probationary program if you do not have a 1.8 GPA.

Drug/Alcohol/Tobacco Policy

Student athletes are not allowed to possess, use, sell, give, transmit, or be under the influence of any drug at any time.

Prescription drugs, unless specifically prescribed are not allowed.

The possession or use of any tobacco product is also prohibited.

Consequences for the SALE/DISTRIBUTION of drugs and/or alcohol

First Violation◦Prohibited from participating for one calendar

year.◦Cannot attend awards ceremony◦May petition to participate after the initial 12

month period from date of 1st violation.Second Violation

◦Indefinitely prohibited from participating in athletics and extra-curricular activities.

Consequences for Possession and/or use of Drugs/Alcohol

First Violation◦Suspension from 100% of scheduled activities

including playoffs and awards ceremonies, or 50% of scheduled events if student completes a drug/alcohol/tobacco assessment.

Second Violation◦Suspension from participation in athletics/co-

curricular activities for one calendar year.Third Violation

◦Prohibited from participation in athletic/co-curricular activities while attending BCS.

Parties

Hosting parties where drugs and/or alcohol is present will be viewed the same as a distribution offense.

To avoid discipline, students who host the party must immediately:◦Ask the individuals who brought the drugs and/or

alcohol to leave,◦Call/inform parents, and◦Call the police. Students who follow this procedure

will not be viewed as distributors of drugs and/or alcohol.

Students who attend parties where drugs and/or alcohol are present will also be disciplined. Students who use the drugs will be disciplined in accordance with the drug and alcohol policy.

If a student attends and does not use drugs or alcohol must leave immediately.

If the student fails to leave, discipline will result in the following:

Consequences for attending a party where drugs/alcohol are present:

First Violation◦Student will miss one game/event but can still attend

practice.Second Violation

◦Student will miss 2 weeks of scheduled activities, including all practices and games. The student will not be able to have any team contact during this period. If the student desires to continue practicing, he/she must do this off school premises.

Third Violation◦Student suspended from participation in athletics, co-

curricular and extracurricular activities for one calendar year.

Self Referrals

Voluntary referrals do not carry any punitive consequences.

Students are allowed to carry one voluntary referral during their participation.

Referrals can be made to the coach, AD, teacher, administrator, guidance counselor or the district prevention specialist, Kathy Fulkerson, [email protected], 330.273.0292.

Students cannot use self-referral as a method to avoid consequences once a code of conduct rule has been violated.

Equipment/Materials

Students are responsible for the care/keeping of all materials issued to them as participants in a BCS activity.

Participants who fail to return uniforms, equipment or supplies at the designated times will be fined the cost of replacing property at current prices.

The school may hold grades, certificates, diplomas, records, and may deny further participation in Brunswick activities until appropriate compensation.
