April 13, 2012 Dear Roman Family, It is my pleasure to greet you at this 2012 Roman Catholic High School Alumni Association Sports Hall of Fame. I appreciate your attendance at this prestigious gathering of Cahillites, as we honor Roman alumni and distinguished guests who have achieved admirably in their respective sports and by their service to God, community, and Roman Catholic. We love to talk about the individual and team accomplishments of Roman Catholic. We enjoy conversations about legendary players, coaches and teams. This evening, we reminisce from the class of 1937, Larry Larthey, to our current football coach Joe McCourt ’01, to this year’s scholar-athlete Stephen Paul ’12. I congratulate all of the Sports Hall of Fame recipients. In 1904, Roman won its first championship with football. The championship banners in the gymnasium include a team from every decade since then. We are proud of our continued athletic heritage at Roman. Striving for excellence in all that we do is important. The way we practice and perform are indicators of coaches, players and teams forming a bond to be the best that they can be. I hope that Roman Catholic continues to do well in all that we do: athletics, academics, activities and alumni involvement. Please help us keep the traditions and championship spirit alive at Broad and Vine. Essentially, we strive to love and serve our God with all our heart and strength. This is at the center and soul of a true champion of Roman Catholic! God bless you and God bless the Roman Family! Peace,
Fr. John B. Flanagan

April 13, 2012 Dear Friends of Catholic High, I extend to you the warmest of welcomes this evening. This is a very special event for us at Roman Catholic, and we do look forward to it each year. Today we put the present on hold and rewind back to our glorious past and our legion of heroes who constantly remind us of our bright and promising future. Congratulations to our new inductees and their very proud families. We have a rich history, and you are now an integral part of it. Tonight as we eavesdrop on the countless stories that will fill this room about this game or that meet or match, we all vicariously share in your glory and the glory that you have brought to Catholic High. You took your coach’s challenge for excellence seriously, you worked hard and gave it your very best, and you succeeded. Roman Catholic has always put forth the maximum effort to fulfill our mission of education - the total person. The legacy of Thomas Cahill’s dream is indelibly imprinted in the mind, body, and spirit of each and every one of our students. Our sports programs have always been the great equalizer of any obvious differences of race, creed, or color. The team is the great melting pot where young men meet, bond, and form lifelong friendships. The strength of our Cahillite tradition has always been our diversity, and that is still true today 122 years later. The presence of God and the strong sense of spirituality that are mentioned by the coaching staff to their players are paramount in promoting our mission of Spirituality through our sports program. I take a great deal of pride as Principal of Roman Catholic to be able to offer every Varsity Catholic League Sport to our young men and their families. There is truly an opportunity for every student to excel in the sport of his choice in one of the most respected leagues in the nation. I thank our Athletic Department, Mr. Dennis DiGiovanni ’02, and Mr. John Pensabene for an excellent program. I thank our coaches, assistant coaches, managers, and moderators for the quality time that they spend with our students. Once again, Congratulations to our new inductees; this is truly your day. I hope that you are as proud of this wonderful honor as we are proud of you and your fantastic accomplishments in the name of the Purple and Gold. Tonight Roman honors its heroes, and so it should be. Gratefully,
Mr. Robert P. O’Neill

LARRY LARTHEYCLASS OF 1937
Larry Larthey was one of those special Cahillites whose incredible accomplishments on the playing field were exceeded by the exemplary life he led following graduation.
Larry Larthey, the son of Irish immigrants, hailed from Gesu parish in North Philadelphia.
A stellar athlete, Larry excelled at both football and track. In football, he was the recipient of numerous honors and distinctions. In track, Larry was the captain of his team, and was also the Catholic League Sprint Champion.
In addition, Larry was also an outstanding boxer for his local Philadelphia boxing team.
For his exceptional play in football and track, Larry was offered a scholarship to Fordham University, but instead chose to serve his country, and enlisted in the U.S. Armed Services. During World War II, Larry was deployed overseas, but was sent back to the States by the army after his youngest brother, Frank ’40, was killed during battle in France. Larry’s other brother, John, was also deployed overseas, and Larry served as a drill sergeant for the duration of the war.
Larry’s motto was: “Always give more of yourself than expected to improve the lives of others.” That was never more apparent than the day Larry happened to be passing by a burning building and ran in to save a toddler from the flames. The newspaper featured a photo of Larry holding the child with the headline “Sprint Champ Saves Child From Burning Building,” and Larry was hailed as a hero by the local media. Roman alumni from across the region beamed with pride.
Larry and his wife Ann raised 6 children (Francis, Lawrence ’68, Dolores, Clare, Henry, and Carol), and he retired as a Prudential Life Insurance Agent. The SHOF committee is proud to posthumously induct Larry Larthey into the RCHS Sports Hall of Fame.
1947 SWIM TEAMIn 1947, two of the greatest
athletic teams to ever represent the Purple and Gold made their mark in the annals of Philadelphia scholastic sports history.
One, the 1947 Football team, is widely known, but the other team, while not widely known among the general public, is held in such high regard by competitive swimming enthusiasts, that in many ways, their accomplishments are just as incredible, and they will finally be properly recognized tonight as one of the greatest teams in Catholic High sports history.
The 1947 Swimming Team was the first Catholic High swimming team to win the Catholic League title. In addition, the team also won the coveted City Title, as well as the prestigious National Catholic Championship title.Members of the team won an astonishing 13 individual titles, with Allan Rhodes ’47 winning 5 titles and Bill Dorsch ’48 winning 4. Dorsch’s backstroke time was so impressive that he gained national recognition.
Remarkably, there are six current members of the R.C.H.S. Sports Hall of Fame that were on the 1947 Swimming Team (including Moderator – Father Paul Cahill ’26).
In addition, returning members of the 1947 team then went on to help the Cahillites win the 1948 Catholic League championship the following year!
The members of the 1947 Swimming Team are:Manager – Sam Marshall, Coach – ‘Chap’ Rafferty, Moderator – Rev. Paul J. Cahill, Captain – Allan Rhodes, Jack Kennedy, George Lanning, Bud Rhodes, Bill Dorsch, Joe McCrossen, Jack Smith, Bill Hoctor, Jack Fagan, Ted Wolpert, Tom Kennedy, Joe Smith, Jack Claffey and Frank Lawlor.
The SHOF committee is proud to induct the 1947 Swimming Team into the RCHS Sports Hall of Fame.
RAY DOVELL
CLASS OF 1954Ray Dovell arrived at Broad and Vine
in 1950, hailing from St. Francis Xavier parish in Fairmount.
Ray quickly established himself as a skilled basketball player at Roman, as well as a leader. By the time he was a senior, Ray had become one of the best players in the Catholic League and was chosen as the team captain. He helped lead the Cahillites to a respectable 8-6 record and Ray was the 2nd leading scorer in the Catholic League that year with 19.2 ppg. His outstanding play that year earned him an All-Catholic selection.
Ray was also selected as one of six “Men of Distinction” in the 1954 RCHS Yearbook.
Following graduation from Roman, Ray attended St. Joseph’s University and was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society. He received a B.S. in Accounting in 1958.
Ray coached basketball and baseball for 10 years in the Juniata Park Boys Club and was also inducted into the Brewerytown Fairmount Hall of Fame.
Ray retired as a Construction Engineer for the City of Philadelphia and was a Master Chief in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He is also a former member of the Professional Society of Civil Engineers.
Ray and his wife Margaret raised 3 children (Grace, Raymond, and Joseph) and now have 7 grandchildren.
The SHOF committee is proud to induct Ray Dovell into the RCHS Sports Hall of Fame.
JOHN SPINOCLASS OF 1964
John Spino arrived at Roman in 1960 from St. Bridget’s parish in East Falls. Known for his speed and agility, John was a star football player and track athlete for the Cahillites
His 98 yard TD reception against Cardinal Dougherty is a Catholic League record that still stands today!
He was chosen as one of Roman’s “Men of Distinction” in the RCHS 1964 Yearbook, and, not surprisingly, was voted “Most Popular Student”.
After graduating from Roman, John founded and coached the East Falls Track Team (boys and girls), and two boys on that team went on to win gold medals at the prestigious Jesse Owens Meet in California (RCHS alums:John Connor ’84 and Pat DiCicco ’82.)
John was also an assistant football coach at Roman (1988-1991), St. Joe’s Prep (1992), and St. John Neumann (1993). He also coached the East Falls Falcons in the Keystone State Football League for 15 years, winning 5 league championships.
John continually gave back to his community. He engineered the remodeling of Cahill Field in 1988-89, was a Roman Alumni Trustee, and a founding member of the RCHS SHOF Committee. John was on the East Falls Development Corporation’s first Board of Directors, was elected as Committee Person and Ward Chairman for the 38th Ward, and was a Republican Party candidate for State Legislature.
John worked as an Operating Engineer for the IUOE Local 542 from 1969 to 1994, and worked at City Hall in the Office of Marriage Licenses & Deeds. In 1995, he was presented with the “Knights Legion of Goodness” by the Italian American Press.
John and his wife, Darlene, have 2 children, Michele and John ’90, and 3 grandchildren; Marie Elena, Olivia, and David.
John passed away in 2007 and for all of his numerous accomplishments, perhaps the one for which he will always be remembered is the incredible number of lives that he touched and friends that he made during his life.
The SHOF committee is proud to posthumously induct John Spino into the RCHS Sports Hall of Fame.
KEITH COADYCLASS OF 1968
Because of Roman’s unprecedented and sustained excellence on the basketball court over the last 40 years, it’s important to remember the players and the teams who laid the foundation for that success in the late 1960’s.
Keith Coady was one of those special Cahillite players who helped set the stage for Roman’s emergence as a Philadelphia high school basketball powerhouse.Keith arrived at Broad and Vine in 1964, hailing from St. John the Baptist parish in Manayunk where he played in the extremely competitive CYO league. He quickly established himself as a player at Roman and was a starter during his four year career at Roman.
As a senior, Keith played in one of the most memorable games in Cahillite basketball history. Facing heavy favorite, and eventual Catholic League champ, O’Hara, in a quarterfinal at the Palestra, the Cahillites lost at the buzzer in triple overtime. Despite the tough loss, the game marked the first playoff appearance for Roman since 1959, and it also served notice to the Catholic League that Roman was back as a basketball power. Keith was one of the leading scorers for the Cahillites in that playoff game with 13.
For his senior year, Keith led the Cahillites in scoring and was named All-Catholic and All-City. He also received the monthly Markward
Award for basketball.Keith also played four years of baseball at Roman as a pitcher and first baseman.
Following graduation, Keith continued his basketball career and played four years at Rider. He also played for the Whitemarsh Rugby Football Club from 1972 to 1985, served as captain for 2 years, and represented the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union’s “select side” over 30 times. Keith has also been rowing competitively since 1998.
Keith and his wife, Marianne, live in Flourtown and have two children, Luke (also a Roman alum) and Anna.
The SHOF committee is proud to induct Keith Coady into the RCHS Sports Hall of Fame.
FRANK SYKESCLASS OF 1972
The tiny, legendary basketball gym at Broad and Vine is still regarded as one of the most difficult to play in by visiting teams. In the early 1970’s, the raucous Roman students would fill the stands for Friday afternoon games, seated only several inches away from the players. The Cahillite players and coaches used the loud, intimidating gym’s small dimensions to their advantage, and would often employ a trapping, smothering defense to frustrate and overwhelm their opponents. One of the best defensive players in Roman basketball history fondly remembers those afternoons in the legendary gym. “I would give anything to play in Roman’s gym again on a Friday afternoon,” Frank Sykes said recently. “There was nothing better.”
Frank Sykes grew up in Roxborough and was from Holy Family parish. Prior to entering Roman in 1968, he had already developed a reputation as a solid athlete in both basketball and baseball. He played three years of Varsity basketball under coach Speedy Morris. Frank was a tenacious defender and nearly always drew the tough assignment of guarding the opposing team’s best player, but Frank could score and rebound as well, and during his senior year he led the Cahillites in scoring (14.9 ppg) and rebounding.
Also during his senior year, Roman won the prestigious Archbishop Ryan Christmas Tournament as Frank did a great job in defending future NBA player, Joe Bryant (Bartram) in the Championship game.He was selected All-Catholic in 1972 and was awarded the Markward Senior Award and the Thomas Cahill Award for basketball.
Frank also played four years of varsity baseball for the Cahillites.
Frank retired from the US Postal Service and now resides in Bucks County with his wife, Donna. They have two grown children, Frank and Melissa, and are the proud grandparents of 2 year old Camryn Marie.
The SHOF committee is proud to induct Frank Sykes into the RCHS Sports Hall of Fame.
JOEL RIVERSCLASS OF 1993
On their road to the Catholic League Football Championship game in 1992, the Cahillites featured one of the toughest defensive units in the Catholic League. Roman’s top defensive player that year was defensive tackle and nose guard, Joel Rivers.
Heading into his senior season, Joel was already known throughout the league as one of the best
defensive lineman as he was named a 2nd Team All-Catholic the previous year.Joel anchored Roman’s defense his senior year as he helped lead the Cahillites
to an undefeated regular season record at 6-0-1. Roman defeated O’Hara and Bonner in the playoffs to advance to the CL Championship but came up short against an undefeated Archbishop Ryan.
For his outstanding play that year, Joel was selected First Team All-City and First Team All-Catholic. He was also named to the All-Southeast Pennsylvania Team, as well as being named to the All-Decade (1990’s) Team.
Joel was also an honor student at Roman with an outstanding average of 93.The SHOF committee is proud to induct Joel Rivers into the RCHS Sports Hall
of Fame.
BILL MOWERCLASS OF 1994Bill Mower was born and raised in Roxborough and hailed from IHM parish. As a young kid playing football for the Roxborough Eagles for 7 years, coaches recognized his potential, so it wasn’t a big surprise that shortly after he arrived at Broad and Vine, he helped lead Roman’s freshman football team to an undefeated record in 1990. Bill became a starting offensive lineman his sophomore year, and was a key member of the 1992 Southern Division Championship team as a junior.
For his outstanding play during his junior year, Bill was named 2nd Team All-Catholic.Bill continued his stellar play as a senior, helping the Cahillites to a 5-2 record and another playoff berth. This time, Bill was named a 1st Team All-Catholic as well as being selected to play in the 1994 City All-Star game. He was also selected as the Most Outstanding Lineman of the annual Roman vs Roxborough Thanksgiving Day Game.Following graduation from Roman, Bill was a 3 year starter at Ursinus College. During his junior year, along with his fellow offensive linemen, he was named the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Also during his junior year, Ursinus went undefeated in conference play, winning the title, and advancing to the NCAA Division III playoffs. During his senior year, Bill was named co-captain and 2nd Team All-Centennial Conference.Bill currently works for SEI Investments, and lives in Collegeville (St. Eleanor’s parish) with his wife Casey and sons, Jack and Shane. He’s also an RCHS Alumni Trustee. The SHOF committee is proud to induct Bill Mower into the RCHS Sports Hall of Fame.
JOE McCOURTCLASS OF 2001
Many that saw Joe McCourt play football claim that he was the greatest player to ever wear the Purple and Gold. Even older alums, who had seen many great players in their day, often acknowledged that “this kid could be the best ever.” His feats and accomplishments on the field were so extraordinary, that he is not only placed among the elite in Catholic League football history, but he’s considered one of the greatest players in Delaware Valley scholastic sports history.
Joe arrived at Broad and Vine in 1997. He was a 4 year football player and he received the Bob Evans Award 3 times (1998-2000). Joe was selected a 1st team All-Catholic an astonishing 5 times, and he is the only player in Catholic League history to receive 1st Team All-Catholic honors for offense, defense, and special teams in the same year: RB, LB, and K.
Joe was the Philadelphia Daily News Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000, the Inquirer Player of the Year in 2000, and he was 1st team All-City in 1999 and 2000. Joe was selected MVP of the Catholic League in 2000.
He was selected as Player of the Decade for the 2000’s for all three leagues (Multi-Purpose player) as voted by Ted Silary – Daily News. He was 1st Team Multi-Purpose player on Silary’s 30 Year All-City team. He won the Maxwell Award (Jim Henry Award winner) for the top scholar athlete in the Tri-State Area. He was a key member of the 1999 CL Championship Football team, and holds the RCHS career rushing record with 3,316 yards.
Joe was also a 4 year baseball player at Roman. He played center field and was selected 1st Team All-City and 1st Team All-Catholic in 2000 and 2001.
Joe was also Roman’s MVP in 2000 and 2001. He was selected for the prestigious Carpenter Cup in 2000 and 2001. Joe was also a 4 year basketball player at Roman, with 3 years on varsity. He played for 2 Catholic League Championship teams, and was also a Markward Award winner.
Joe was also an excellent student at Roman and maintained a 4.0 average.
After graduation, Joe went on to Lafayette College, was a 4 year football player, won 2 Patriot League Championships, and holds numerous Lafayette College football records.Joe is currently working at Harcom College and is the Head Football Coach at Roman. He’s led the Cahillites to the 2010 & 2011 CL Championship games.
The SHOF committee is proud to induct Joe McCourt into the RCHS Sports Hall of Fame.
SCOTT PAXSONCLASS OF 2001It is often said that football games
are decided “in the trenches”, within the battles along the offensive and defensive lines. Control the line, and you control the game. In 1999, Roman’s Hall of Fame Championship Football Team was able to control both sides of the ball because of one of the best, and most physically imposing players in the history of the Catholic League - Scott Paxson. As a defensive lineman, Scott was
nearly unstoppable. Despite the fact that he was often double and triple-teamed by opponents, Scott consistently got to the quarterback or dropped running backs for losses. As a tight end, Scott was deceptively quick and agile. When he wasn’t delivering crushing blocks, he was a favorite target of Roman quarterbacks, and his size and power often required more than one defensive player to bring him down.Scott was a 4 year football player at Roman. As a junior, he was one of the best players on the Catholic League Championship team, and he was selected 1st team All-Catholic as a tight end, and 2nd Team All-City as a defensive lineman.
As a senior, Scott was one of the best two-way players in the entire Delaware Valley as he was selected 1st Team All-City for defense, and 1st Team All-Catholic for offense and defense!
Scott was also chosen for the All-City and All-Catholic Decade Teams (2000’s) for defense and was also selected for The Big 33.Scott also played 3 years of varsity
basketball (2 Catholic League Champion teams) and 2 years of varsity baseball as a catcher for the Cahillites.
Following graduation from Roman, Scott accepted a scholarship and went on to star at Penn State as a defensive lineman, and he was chosen 1st Team All Big-Ten Conference following his senior season.
Scott is now a 5 year NFL veteran, won the Super Bowl while with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and is currently with the Cleveland Browns. The SHOF committee is proud to induct Scott Paxson into the RCHS Sports Hall of Fame.

Patrick E. WardScholar-Athlete Memorial Award
Patrick E. Ward was raised in St. Francis Xavier parish and then went onto RCHS where he graduated in 1966. During his years at Roman, “Patty” was a guard on the football team, ran track and sang in the glee club. He was voted most popular student in his senior year. “Patty” was killed in Vietnam in August 1968. There is a park named in his honor at 24th and Aspen St. in the Fairmount section.
Special Awards
Stephen Paul ’12Roman Catholic High School’s choice for the 2012 Patrick
Ward Scholar-Athlete Award is Stephen Paul. Although there were many outstanding scholar-athletes in this year’s senior class, very few excelled academically and athletically as well as Steve has. From the moment he entered Catholic High in the fall of 2008, Steve immediately began to set very lofty goals for himself. Now, four years later, Steve has surpassed all of them in a most impressive fashion.
Born and raised in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia, Steve is a member of St. John the Baptist Parish and graduated from St. Bridget’s elementary school. As an honors freshman, Steve quickly set himself apart as a hardworking, brilliant, and dedicated student. His efforts immediately began paying dividends for Steve, as he achieved first honors every year and a class rank in the top 10 percent of the senior class. This year, Steve has continued to challenge himself by taking Advanced Placement courses in United States History and Psychology as well as an advanced course in Art.
Steve is much more than just a tremendous student. He is the epitome of a well-rounded individual. Freshman year also began Steve’s athletic career. As a three-year member of the varsity golf team and a four-year member of the varsity swim team, Steve quickly demonstrated that he has many talents and that he uses them to the fullest. During his senior year, Steve earned the title of captain for the swim team where he helped lead the team to its best record since the team was reinstituted.
Steve is also a member of the school’s mock trial team which made it to the semi-final round of the city championship. Recently, Steve was chosen as Rector for the school’s Kairos retreat program where he helped organize a four-day retreat for his fellow seniors. If that weren’t enough, Steve is also a member of the National Honor Society, the Junior AOH, Ambassadors, and the ASIST Program.
As impressive as Steve is, his future is just as bright. Steve has already received college acceptances from Penn State University and West Chester University. He has also received both acceptances and scholarships from Catholic University of America and Temple University. For these reasons, Stephen Paul was the perfect choice among the faculty to receive the 2012 Scholar-Athlete Award.

A TRIBUTE TO JIM CAMPBELLCLASS OF 1952
Jim passed away October 13, 2009. We both attended Our Lady of Mercy school, RCHS, and LaSalle University. We ran track together at OLM and Roman. We did a lot of things together growing up in North Philadelphia.
He was a great friend and joy to be with at all times. He loved all sports especially tennis and he was well read and a good teacher. Jim was kind, gentle and understanding. He was a true gentleman.
We miss him very much. He will live in our hears forever. His spirit will be with us always.
