Movie Time in UtahDeep powder. Huge airs. Chilling cinematography. It’s all part of Warren Miller’s latest “Children of Winter”. The TGR Boys Are Back.Doing it all over again, Teton Gravity Research’s “Under the Influence” premiered at Harry O’s in Park City Sept. 26 and will repeat in Alta at Our Lady of the Snows, Monday, Nov. 24. Tickets are just $5 at the door. The 13th feature examines the passion, people and places that inspire us to ride. Locations include: Jackson Hole, Haines AK, Switzerland, Romania, Pemberton BC, Utah, and Montana. For more info and to view the trailer, click over to www.tetongravity.com.

Greatest Ski Movie EverMatchStick Productions’ “Claim: The Greatest Ski Movie Ever” debuts at the Jim Santy Auditorium in Park City, Oct. 10. MSP’s 20th ski film release pokes fun at themselves and the industry as a whole. The film includes the introduc-tion of 15-year-old phenom Sean Pettit, a speed riding session from Chamonix, France, and epic high-definition scenes shot on location in Whistler, Chamonix, Courmayer, Valdez, Aspen, Chatter Creek and more. Tickets are $15 the night of the show and at the Helly Hansen store at Redstone. An additional showing of “CLAIM” at the Jim Santy Auditorium in Park City will be held on 10/11 and 10/12. Visit www.skimovie.com/tour for a sneak peek and more info.

SLC’s 7th Annual Ovarian Cancer Climb4Life The Black Diamond Equipment-sponsored Climb 4 Life, rolled back into Salt Lake for a killer weekend of climbing with pros, schwag, parties, food and fun. Both experienced climbers and newcomers were wel-comed (including men and kids). Pro athletes joined volunteers, Exum guides and a hundred participants to climb for ovarian cancer research in Little and Big Cottonwood canyons and American Fork Canyon. The pros set up topropes on routes of all levels so you didn’t have to do any-thing but climb until your arms gave out. Most people climbed anywhere from five to 10 routes in one day. This year, the event raised more than $100,000. A portion of the funds will go to support the local Women-to-Women ovarian cancer support group, the Utah Ovarian Cancer Ini-tiative. Don’t miss this event next year. It’s a great way to meet women, climbing partners and the rock. www.herafoundation.org.

Ski Utah Gold Passes on Sale These bad boys go fast so if you’ve got a spare $3400, plunk it down now for a 2008-09 Ski Utah Gold Pass. The pass offers 40 days of skiing at each of these: Powder Mountain, Alta, Park City, Soli-tude, Deer Valley, Brighton, Snowbird, The Canyons, Beaver Mountain, Brian Head, Snowbasin, Sundance, and Wolf Mountain. And it’s fully transferable, so your friends and family can use it if you have to work. When you do the math, 40 days at Deer Valley alone would pay for that pass. Full-day DV tickets are $83 this

winter ($86 during holiday periods)! The cheaper Silver Pass ($2300) is valid for 30 days of skiing at each participating area in Utah and is non- transferable. If you’re interested, email Ski Utah at [email protected]. Include your contact informa-tion with email and phone number.

Letter From The EditorIt’s 3:43 a.m. in Utah…but only 11:43 at night in Maui. We just got back from one of those cheesy luaus where the food is mediocre, the show kitsch and yet you still wind up having a great time. It helps that there’s an open bar with the tender free-pouring. A few more days and we’ll be back in Park City and I’ll be wondering what happened to the summer. Like Goto, our 60-year-old Japanese surf instructor from the Opelu Surf School in Lahaina said about the waves: You wait and wait, then all of a sudden it’s on top of you so you better be ready to paddle hard and ride it for however long it lasts because it’s over like that. He snaps his fingers. And there went summer. Is that a bad thing, really? When the falls and winters are so spectacular along the Wasatch and down south? But now that it’s gotten cooler, the Stump Jumper is begging for a spin, the climbing shoes ache from the weekend at Climb 4 Life and my pup yaps to hike the San Rafael Swell. Wish I could have stayed another two weeks in Maui- maybe get good enough to hang ten on a short board (or at least try) but the time is ripe to kick the moun-tain sports back into gear. Grab a Sports Guide for info on night climbing, fall gear picks and swaps, what’s coming this winter to the resorts and get amped for the coming months. Don’t look back on what was but grab that wave and go gangbusters for what is now.

Wellness Trends Go To The DogsA new survey conducted by Harris Interactive, reveals the dawn of “howl-istic” practices among dog lovers nationwide. Ninety-two percent of adults who have a dog agreed their pup’s emotional health is as important to them as their physical health. Those sniffing around the Web check out Dr. Jodi Smith’s pet answers on JustAnswer.com, the largest expert advice provider on the Internet. With over 50,000 queries specifically about dogs each month, JustAnswer.com is an information hub for those looking to improve the quality of life for their dogs. Dr. Smith offers these basic tips:No matter your pace, integrate your pup into your personal wellness plan, use quality ingredients in your dog food, apply basic safety rules to both you and your dog (don’t exercise on full stomachs, keep hydrated, stay out of severe weather and remember to stretch), praise and prattle. Dogs are great listeners and will patiently hear out the story of your whole day in return for a belly rub or scratch behind the ears.

Sign Up For SundanceWhether you like to plan ahead or make decisions on the fly, it’s time to think about your Sundance Film Festival tickets. Registration for Festival Passes and Ticket Packages began September 23. Locals will have until Oct. 3 to sign up for a slot to purchase Locals passes and packages to the 200 dramatic, docu-mentary, and short films presented at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. The regular public has until Oct. 10 but those general passes and packages are more pricey. After the 3rd’s deadline, the Festival system randomly assigns purchase timeslots to registrants and sends out an email notification that in-cludes the date and time you have been assigned to return to the website to make your purchase. One of the local favorites is the Adrenaline Pass [$400, January 16-25, 2009]. You get admission to all screenings before 10:00 a.m. and after 10:00 p.m. and admission for one to the Awards Night Party on Sat-urday, January 24, 2009. Buying this one leaves plenty of time to ski but you

better plan on drinking lots of coffee and Red Bull. For the first time ever, locals will also be able to have the first opportunity to purchase a package and a pass normally offered through National Festival Pass and Ticket Package sales: Express Pass B, Discovery Package, and Of-ficial SFF 09 Credential. Go to http://festival.sundance.org for the details.

Down With Private ClubsUtah’s liquor laws may soon be a little less screwy if Utah’s Governor Huntsman has his way. Utah is the only state where you have to join a “private club” in order to drink in a bar that serves hard liquor. It’s basically a $5-20 cover charged that leaves a sour taste in the mouths of ski vacationers who otherwise might ‘barhop’ and spend loads of money freely and willingly in our popular winter state. Hunts-man agrees that the present restriction hurts tourism and has asked the legisla-ture to toss it out. The smoking ban in Utah bars takes effect this January (yay) so there’ll be no need for the private club designation. (Smoking in public areas is prohibited under Utah law.) This new proposal’s biggest hurdle is the LDS Church with its strong distaste for imbibing. Close to 90 percent of Utah’s lawmakers is Mormon. The Church’s only comment so far is, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes that Utahns...can come together as citizens, regard-less of religion or politics, to support laws and regulations that allow individual freedom of choice while preserving Utah’s proven positive health and safety record on limiting the tragic consequences of overconsumption of alcohol.”
