As part of the High School curriculum, Se- niors are required to perform a Senior Capstone Project and/ or Internship. That is when the wheels started turning for Dawson Portner, who is a cur- rent baseball player for the Tea Legion Post 266 Tincaps and Tea Area Titan baseball teams. On Monday and Tuesday, August 24 and 25, Dawson organized a free youth base- ball clinic at the Tea Athletic Complex. The camp was offered to current 3rd-6th graders to come out and learn some fundamentals around hitting, pitching, catching, throwing, and having fun with players and volunteers alike. “Having a love for the game since I was at these ages, I thought having a baseball camp would be a great way for me to share my talents, as well as to give back to the young players in Tea,” Portner said. He estimates having around 35-40 participants on both evenings and also credits vol- unteers within the community. “Rod Fortin was my mentor for this Senior Project and with his help and network within Tea and the surrounding areas, we were able to make it a great camp by getting outstanding volunteers for the camp,” Port- ner said. He said that volunteers in- cluded several Tea Tincap Le- gion players and coaches, Tea Park and Recreation coaches and volunteers, as well as several parents and family members that showed up for the camp and couldn’t help but wanted to be part of it. “It was a great experience for not only them, but me as well. It’s a great group of kids that I can’t wait to umpire next summer,” said Portner. “Thanks to everyone who helped make this camp possible!” Portner offered his thanks to the City of Tea for their partner- ship in offering use of the field space and equipment to be able to offer the camp for free, as well as advertising the camp through their Facebook page. This week’s Athlete of the Week for Titan girls’ soccer is Brooke Deckert. Brooke was nominated by head coach, Mark Anderson. She is a Junior midfielder and a Captain on the soccer team. “Brooke is usually the most consistent player on the field. Her teammates know they can depend on her to be there on and off the field,” said Anderson. At the end of the 2019 season Brooke started preparing for the 2020 season. She took advantage of school being canceled due to Covid-19. She stayed mentally and physically prepared so she could help lead her team. “Brooke motivates her team and coaches by staying positive in all situations she works hard at practice to learn from her Coaches and to teach those who need help,” Anderson added. Congrats, Brooke. TAHS senior holds youth baseball camp ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Brooke Deckert This week’s Athlete of the Week for Titan girls’ softball is Addisyn Hansen. Eric Munson was sec- ond with a score of 80.
