Today we welcome the officials, players and supporters of Wickham Market FC for our first home game of the season and it’s great to be back at the Victory Ground. Mark and Bob Flack have done a fantastic job in getting the ground looking as good as it does after the punishing summer. I know the grass isn't as thick in places as they would like but I think everyone would agree they have done a remarkable job under the circumstances. If you see them about please thank them for all their hard work. As a first team squad we have gained a couple of new players, Kurt Waterfield is our new goal keeper and has already made a great impression, while Jack Durey has also joined us from Cornard. I am sure that both are go-ing to make a major contribution to the squad. We have also dual signed Ben Mayhew as our cover Goal Keeper, who has already proven to be a significant addition. We wish all our new players a long and happy time with the club. There are lots of good things going on at the club at pre-sent, but I must highlight the under 18 Thurlow Nunn team. Julian Read and Neil Van Holland, assisted by Na-than Banks and Jack Warnock have done a brilliant job with the team. They have currently won their last three games and last week beat Ipswich Wanderes to reach the last 16 of the County Cup. Lots of the boys have played for the A team and Reserves already this season and I’m sure some of them will follow James Pam in mak-ing their First team debut as he did against Bacton. Most of these boys have come through the youth teams as a result of Paul White and Tim Martin’s coaching and I’m delighted that they have joined Kevin in the managing of the Reserves.
I hope you enjoy this afternoons game

I would firstly like to welcome Tim Martin and Paul White, who have recently joined the Reserves coaching team. They both come from last season’s impressive U18’s youth team and I know our team will benefit from their experience.
This season has started off much the same as last year with the Reserves not having a settled side for our first 3 league games. In fact we have already used 29 players - that’s over half our total for last season and only 4 players have played in all 3 games. The large number of changes has made it difficult for the players to build an understand-ing and to establish patterns of play.
Our first game away to newly promoted Trimley saw a tough game to start with. After battling back from conced-ing 2 early goals we went in at half time level. Conceding 2 late goals saw us on the wrong end of a 4-2 score line.
This season we have a strong group of young players com-ing through to the adult set up. In the first game, four U18’s were given the opportunity to show their talent.
The youth were again called upon for a tricky away fixture at Westerfield. A big strong group of experienced players who all had a good understanding and appeared to have played together for a while. Our young team, with 7 of the 13 players under 20 years old, started slowly, taking time to settle and to work out the opposition’s game plan. Eve-rybody had to work very hard to establish ourselves in the game but when we got the ball on the floor and started to pass it around, we caused Westerfield problems and de-servedly took the lead. A neat through ball from Danny Hill played into Tom Emerick and he ran on and slid it under the keeper. We were put under sustained pressure at the end of the first half, which saw Olly Chaplin saving a penal-ty but even he couldn’t stop the equaliser, a close range header that levelled the score at the half-time.
Three of the midfield four were U18’s and they grew into the game in the second half. Passing the ball around and creating chances for Tom Emerick, whose pace had caused the Westerfield defence problems all game long. Man of the Match Tom Emerick turned provider when his two pull backs saw Tommy Martin and Josh Thomas get on the end to seal a 3-1 away win.
After a tough start, unable to field a settled side and play-ing two of the strongest sides in the league, the Reserves have got their first points of the season and are now look-ing forward to the challenges of beating last year’s points tally and further developing the clubs young players.

Baggies Manager explains that faith keeps him calm Former West Bromwich defender turned manager Darren Moore says his faith in Jesus Christ has played a pivotal role in his career. Moore, who represented Baggies over 100 times in his ca-reer took the helm of his former club at The Hawthorns in April on a temporary basis following the sacking of Alan Pardew. He has now been given the post permanently after a sensa-tional spell in charge despite the club being relegated. He said’ God has had a big influence on my career ever since I joined Bradford in June 1997. There I travelled to training each day with Wayne Jacobs and the friendship we formed led to the start of my journey in faith. ‘Wayne was a Christian and I was inspired by his testimony. Everything about it seemed so right to me’ ‘Soon I invited God into my life. Since then throughout my time at Ports-mouth FC, WBA, Derby County and Barnsley FC before I went onto the football pitch. I would give thanks to God for giving me the opportunity to play. However, after the kick off Im focused on the match and my aim is to try to help my side to win. After the match I would give God thanks for the opportunity of taking part and for keeping me free from injury. I’m grateful to Him for that . God really gave me confidence on the pitch. Before I used to beat myself up under the pressures of the game. ‘I’ve got a certain peace now and I’ve got someone to turn to. Now as a manager I know to not only give my best, but also to go out and enjoy myself.’

Sporting 87 announce a major new sponsorship deal
Sporting 87 are delighted to announce a major new sponsorship deal with Getaway Cars. The deal will see Getaway Cars logo on all the clubs Youth and Adult teams playing shirts. Last season Getaway cars sponsored the home and away playing shirts of the First team who play in the SIL Touchline Division 1, along with the Clubs u18 Thurlow Nunn team. Following the success of that deal the Club and Getaway Cars have announced a two year deal. This will be a long term partnership, which will see all 30 of the youth teams carrying the Getaway cars logo on the front of their playing shirt, and First Stop Travel on the neck of the shirt.
Jonathan Warnock, Sporting 87 Director of Football said ‘We are so grateful to Glenn Edwards from Getaway Cars. Running a football club is becoming more chal-lenging so this support is invaluable, and this is a major deal for us . ’
The deal will also see Getaway Cars take advertising in the First team programme, Glenn Edwards of Getaway Cars said ‘ We are a local company that supports several local community groups where we can. Sporting have a great influence in the local community and we are delighted to be able to support them. It worked well last year, and having our logo on all the youth teams will give us a large exposure.’
Darren Brown said ‘ We are delighted that all of our thirty youth teams will carry the Getaway Cars logo on the front of our playing shirt, inline with the rest of the club’

Hello and welcome to the Victory Sports Ground for another season. I know that for some of you the season is well underway and the World Cup is already a distant memory, but mainly due to late holidays I have only just got into watching games. My first live game of the season was the other night watching the u18s in the County Cup over at Sudbury. A great performance in a keenly fought game saw a fine 5-3 win. A really enjoyable evening and the promise of a good season to come. It was good to catch up with a few people on the touchline too. My previous live game had been seeing Cov get promot-ed at Wembley at the back end of last season, their first promotion from any division in over 50 years. Another hugely enjoyable day – not many of them spent watch-ing Cov over the years. I hope it is not another 51 years till the next promotion. A great encouragement already this season has been the enthusiasm of a friend of mine whose son has just joined the club. He has been really impressed with every con-tact with the club they have had so far, which is a great testament to those involved in the youth set up. On my way to the u18 game the other night I tried a ‘short cut’ in Sudbury which just left me getting really lost around the one way system. Eventually I stopped to ask directions and was pointed the right way by some-one who, amazingly, also has a son who joined Sporting this summer. As I was thinking about this today I was reminded of a couple of verses in the Bible where Jesus said ‘Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls’. For those of you who are feeling lost and not knowing where you are going, Jesus is offering a new way, a new direction (letting him guide your path as the yoke guided the oxen), rest and peace. Perhaps it is time to stop going round and round your own one-way system and be guided by the One who really does know the Way. Enjoy your footy and I look forward to catching up with you soon.
