Piovesana aims to raise bar as she prepares for Nanjing medal in the under-63kg cat- egory at the Cadet World Championships in Miami last year. Now she is aiming to raise the bar by fighting her way onto the podium at the second edition of the Youth Olympics in Nanjing in August. And buoyed by her 2013 suc- cess, the Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls pu- pil is adamant she can still perform when the going gets tougher at under-19 level. “Getting a bronze medal at the Cadet World Champion- ships in Miami last year is the biggest thing I’ve done,” said Piovesana. “We had to qualify but I don’t even know how I man- aged to do it and there was no pressure on anyone from the British team as no-one really expected us to do it. “It might be a bit too early for the Commonwealth Games this year but I’m hopefully go- ing to the Youth Olympics in China in August, so that’s my main event of the year. “I would like to do better but to even get a bronze in that would be a big achievement, it’s almost as big as the Olympics but for my age group which is under-19s, so to even be there would be great.” Piovesana can look to fellow Brit Jade Jones for inspiration should she fight in Nanjing – the taekwondo player winning gold at the inaugural Youth Olympics in 2010 and then London 2012. Closer to home Gemma Gib- bons and Karina Bryant won silver and bronze respectively at the Olympics in 2012 and – almost two years on – Pioves- ana is still feeling the effect of their success. “Since 2012 British judo has really improved, especially ju- niors now. We’ve never had gold in the Olympics so hope- fully it can be me one day,” she added.
