Persepolis goalkeeper Hamed Lak was the hero as he saved An Nassr’s fourth spot-kick - taken by Maicon - as the Islamic Republic of Iran side advanced to their second AFC Champions League final in three years and denied Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr a maiden appearance in the continental final. Play was centred around the pitch with a relative advantage for Al Nassr in the opening quarter of an hour, but it took 18 minutes for the first chance of the match to arrive as Bashar Resan found space inside Al Nassr’s half and lined a low drive that crept wide. Ten minutes from the half-time whistle, Al Nassr were awarded a penalty after Resan brought Khalid Al Ghannam down inside the box. Hamdallah stepped up confidently and chipped it into the back of the net ‘Panenka’ style for his seventh goal of the 2020 AFC Cham- pions League. Persepolis needed just six minutes to restore parity after Vahid Amiri dispossessed left-back Awad Khamis deep into Al Nassr’s half and fed Resan who whipped in a cross for Qara who guided his header past goalkeeper Brad Jones to make it 1-1 in the 42nd minute. Al Nassr were dealt a blow at half-time with Khalid Al Ghannam withdrawn through injury to be replaced by Ayman Yahya. With 20 minutes left, Sultan Al Ghannam was stretchered off with a persistent groin injury, following his namesake into the treatment room as coach Rui Vitoria introduced Osama Al Khalaf in his place. Hamdallah got on the end of several crosses in the final 20 minutes but was unlucky not to convert; first the Moroccan controlled Abdullah Al Khaibari’s cross with his chest and struck on the half-volley, but his attempt went wide, then minutes later he headed Pity Martinez’s set- piece off the ground and behind for a goal kick as the game headed for extra time. Persepolis were reduced to 10 men in the final minute of an oth- erwise quiet first half of extra time as midfielder Ehsan Pahlavan received his second yellow card of the night following a challenge on Al Nassr substitute Abdulrahman Al Dossari. Playing with a numerical disad- vantage for the remaining quarter of an hour, Persepolis showed some resilient defending in the face of an avalanche of Saudi attacks and were able take the game to the penalty shootout. Hossein Kanaani and Abdullah Madu converted from the spot then Siamak Nemati and Martinez fol- lowed suit. Milad Sarlak made it 3-2 for Persepolis and substitute Abdul- rahman Al Obaid ensured the score was level after three shots each. It was the turn of the other two centre-backs; Shojae Khalilzadeh scored for Persepolis but goalkeeper Lak saved from Maicon to hand his side the advantage. Substitute Ali Shojae sealed the Iranian side’s victory with the final spot-kick to send them into the final with a 5-3 win. AFP – PARIS Novak Djokovic demolished Colombian lucky loser Daniel Galan to reach the Roland Garros last 16 for a record- equalling 11th successive year yesterday as unheralded Daniel Altmaier struck another blow for the underdogs. World number one Djokovic swept past 153rd- ranked Galan 6-0, 6-3, 6-2, his most challenging moment coming when he helped groundstaff lay more clay on the surface of Court Philippe Chatrier after rain had made it treacherous. “I played pretty solid today, I’m happy about that,” said Djokovic, the 2016 champion who is chasing an 18th Grand Slam title, after his 71st win in Paris. Djokovic, who has dropped just 15 games in three rounds, took his 2020 record to 34 wins against one loss as he continues his bid to become the first man in half a century to win all four Grand Slam titles twice. Next up is Russian 15th seed Karen Khachanov who put out Chile’s Cristian Garin. The day after world number 239 Hugo Gaston and Sebastian Korda, ranked at 213, made the last 16, German qualifier Altmaier kept the sport’s outsiders in the headlines. The world number 186 stunned seventh seed Matteo Berrettini of Italy 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, becoming just the fourth man in 20 years to reach the round of 16 on his Grand Slam debut. Victory also means an unexpected financial windfall for the 22-year-old who is guaranteed at least $221,400 having earned $173,600 in his entire six-year career. Altmaier paid tribute to three-time major winner Stan Wawrinka for his help when he missed virtually all of 2018 through injury. Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas made the fourth round for a second successive year when Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene retired with a right foot injury. The 22-year-old was on court for just 80 minutes and was leading 6-1, 6-2, 3-1 when Bedene called it quits. Next up for Tsitsipas is Bulgarian 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov who also profitted from a retirement with Roberto Carballes Baena 6-1, 6-3 down when he gave up due to illness. The Spaniard had shocked ninth seed Denis Shapovalov in the previous round but that five-hour epic came back to haunt him. Russian 13th seed Andrey Rublev, the champion on clay in Hamburg on the eve of Roland Garros, eased past veteran South African Kevin Anderson in just 94 minutes. Rublev didn’t face a break point in his 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 win as he moved into the last 16 for the first time where he will face world number 63 Marton Fucsovics, the first Hungarian man in the second week since Balazs Taroczy in 1984. Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur became the first Arab woman to make the last 16 with a 7-6 (9/7), 2-6, 6-3 win over Bela- rusian eighth seed Aryna Sabalenka. Jabeur, seeded 30, who made the quarter- finals at the Australian Open in January, faces either 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza from Spain or Danielle Collins of the United States for a place in the last-eight. American fourth seed and Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin eased through with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Romanian qualifier Irina Bara. Zhang Shuai became the first Chinese woman to reach the last 16 since former champion Li Na in 2012. Zhang, 31, defeated French wildcard, and world number 357, Clara Burel 7-6 (7/2), 7-5 and will next face seventh seed Petra Kvitova who came back from 1-5 down in the first set and saved two set points to see off 18-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez 7-5, 6-3. Spain’s Paula Badosa, ranked at 87, wept in her courtside chair as she reached the round of 16 at a Slam for the first time. The 2015 junior champion, who put out former US Open winner Sloane Stephens in the last round, defeated 2017 champion in Paris Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 6-3. NBA: James, Davis propel LA Lakers past Miami HeatAFP — MIAMI

Anthony Davis and LeBron James powered Los Angeles to a 124-114 victory over the Miami Heat that put the Lakers two wins away from their first NBA title since 2010.

The injury depleted Heat hung on as well as they could, but 33 points from James and 32 from Davis were just too much.

Davis, playing in his first NBA Finals, over-powered a Heat defense missing injured Bam Adebayo.

He added 14 rebounds as the Lakers took a two games to none lead in the best-of-seven NBA Finals in the league’s quarantine bubble in Orlando, Florida.

“He’s a big-time player,” James, playing in his 10th championship series, said of Davis, whose 14 rebounds included eight offensive boards.

“He understands the position we’re in.”

Davis made 14 of his first 15 shots from the field, finishing with 15 baskets in 20 attempts.

For the second straight game James approached a triple-double, added nine assists and nine rebounds.

Jimmy Butler led the Heat with 25 points and Kelly Olynyk added 24 off the bench as the Heat had to make do not only without Adebayo but with star guard Goran Dragic, who was sidelined by a left foot injury.

The Heat will try to pull back a victory in game three today.

Ganna wins opening stage ofGiro d’Italia

REUTERS — PALERMO

Italian Filippo Ganna won the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia yesterday, a 15.1-km individual time trial between Monreale and Palermo, to claim the first Maglia Rosa leader’s jersey of this year’s race.

The Ineos-Grenadiers rider, who claimed the time trial title at the world champi-onships last week, clocked 15 minutes 24 seconds to beat Portugal’s Joao Almeida by a massive 22 seconds.

Briton Geraint Thomas, also from Ineos-Grenadiers, was the best of the pre-race favourites when he took fourth place with a time of 15:47 with his compatriot Simon Yates losing 26 seconds to the 2018 Tour de France champion.

Two-time champion and home favourite Vincenzo Nibali had a disappointing ride, finishing 1:06 behind Thomas, with Dane Jakob Fuglsang and Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk also losing precious time - down 1:24 and 1:21 on the leader, respectively.

Fuglsang’s Astana team mate and co-leader Aleksandr Vlasov of Russia lost 54 seconds to Thomas.

Astana, however, lost key climber Miguel Angel Lopez, sixth overall in the Tour de France, who was taken into an ambulance after crashing heavily when he hit a bump on the road.

The Giro was rescheduled from its original May 9-31 dates with the start being moved from Hungary to Sicily amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Lady Princess wins as Qatari-owned horses continue to sparkle in ParisTHE PENINSULA — PARIS

In the presence of H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Qatari-owned horses continued to dazzle at the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris yesterday.

The Sheail bin Khalifa Al Kuwari-owned Lady Princess claimed an impressive victory in the QREC-sponsored Gr1 P/A Qatar Arabian Trophie des Juments, for four-year-old fillies over 2,000m at the Paris-Longchamp yesterday.

Lady Princess’ win was yet another demonstration of Qatar’s leadership in Purebred Arabian racing, especially as it took place only 24 hours fol-lowing two other Gr1 P/A vic-tories landed by Al Shaqab Rac-ing’s Alawsj in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches and Sheail bin Khalifa Al Kuwari’s Hadi De Carrere in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pou-lains at St. Cloud.

Nasser Bin Sherida Al Kaabi, QREC CEO, took part in the trophy presentation of the day’s races.

These victories further enhance the standing of Purebred Arabian races spon-sored by Qatar, reflect the success of QREC’s vision of pro-moting Purebred Arabian racing worldwide and foster Qatar’s pioneering image in this discipline.

Lady Princess (General) was the impressive winner of the Group 1 Purebred Arabian race of the day, the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments (Group 1 PA) for owner Sheail bin Khalifa Al Kuwari.

These colours were also carried to success yesterday in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr1 PA) by Hadi de

Held up in last for the majority of the race, Valia then

came with a strong run up the middle of the tack and easily got the better of both Nemean Lion (Golden Horn) et Step by Step (Sidestep).

La Liga: Atlético Madrid and Suárez held by Villarreal AP — MADRID

Atlético Madrid struggled again with Luis Suárez in attack, and was held by Villarreal for its second straight 0-0 draw in the Spanish league yesterday.

After opening with a 6-1 rout of Granada - with Suárez coming off the bench and scoring twice - Atlético had played to a scoreless draw at promoted Huesca. That game marked the Uruguay striker’s first start with his new club after being told by Barcelona that he wasn’t wanted anymore.

Suárez and the rest of Atlético’s team had a lack-luster performance then, and again on Saturday against Villarreal. They were unable to create significant scoring chances at its Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Villarreal squandered a few good opportunities to come away with the victory, frustrated by Atlético goal-keeper Jan Oblak.

Unai Emery’s Villarreal, which entered the season amid high expectations, was coming off two wins from its first four matches. It lost 4-0 to Barcelona at the Camp Nou Stadium last weekend.

Expectations also rose for Atlético after it signed Suárez and he scored two goals and set up another in about 20 minutes off the bench against Granada, but there was only disappointment after the consecutive scoreless draws going into the international break.

Suárez, starting in place of Diego Costa and playing alongside Portuguese forward João Félix, had few chances in front of goal, just as had happened against Huesca.

Meanwhile, a 90th-minute goal by Kevin Rodrigues gave 10-man Eibar a 2-1 victory over Valladolid in a match between winless teams.

Man City held by Leeds; Chelsea click into gear

AFP — LONDON

Manchester City were forced to settle for a pulsating 1-1 draw against Leeds as Rodrigo cancelled out Raheem Sterling’s opener, while Chelsea’s big spending began to bear fruit as they thrashed Crystal Palace 4-0 yesterday.

While Chelsea clicked into gear and City struggled to find their rhythm, James Rodriguez guided Everton to the top of the Premier League by scoring twice in a 4-2 win over Brighton.

City were humiliated last weekend when Leicester won 5-2 at the Etihad Stadium and Pep Guardiola responded by splashing out on Benfica defender Ruben Dias.

Dias made his debut at Elland Road and the Portugal centre-back had his work cut out for him in an entertaining game packed with chances at both ends.

Sterling fired City into a deserved 16th-minute lead, cutting inside on the left edge of the penalty area driving his low shot inside the far post.

But City’s failure to turn their early dominance into more goals proved costly as Rodrigo pounced on a mistake by Brazilian goal-keeper Ederson to turn the ball home from close range in the 59th minute. City have won just one of their first three league games and still look short of the standard required to overhaul champions Liverpool.

Their lack of cutting edge without injured strikers Sergio

Aguero and Gabriel Jesus will concern Guardiola with just days until the transfer window closes tomorrow. For promoted Leeds, this buccaneering performance was further proof that Marcelo Bielsa’s commitment to attacking play can flourish in the top-flight.

Frank Lampard has asked for patience after Chelsea’s £220m splurge in the market ($285m), but the pressure was on the Blues to respond after a disappointing 3-3 draw at newly-promoted West Brom and a League Cup exit to a much-changed Tottenham in the past week.

For the first time Lampard was able to field five of his new signings as Edouard Mendy and Ben Chilwell made their Premier League debuts with Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner also starting.

Chilwell had the biggest impact as he opened the floodgates with a thunderous strike at the far post five minutes into the second-half before his cross teed up Kurt Zouma to double Chelsea’s lead.

What should have been a

routine win for the hosts did not go without controversy as Jorginho then slotted home two penalties after Tammy Abraham and Havertz had been felled inside the area.

However, for the second spot-kick, captain Cesar Azpilicueta had to intervene to take the ball off Abraham with the England striker desperate to get on the scoresheet.

Everton will head into the Mer-seyside derby against Liverpool after the international window with maximum points from their first four games as James again shone for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

The Toffees also have the Premier League’s form striker in their armoury as Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring by heading home his ninth goal of the season to celebrate his first ever call-up to the England squad.

Jordan Pickford’s howler let Brighton back into the game as the Everton keeper dropped Leandro Trossard’s weak effort at the feet of Neal Maupay, who turned home an equaliser.

Chelsea 4 (Chilwell 50, Zouma 66, Jorginho 78-pen, 82-pen) Crystal Palace 0Everton 4 (Calvert-Lewin 16, Mina 45+2, Rodriguez 52, 70) Brighton 2 (Maupay 41, Bissouma 90)Leeds 1 (Rodrigo 59) Manchester City 1 (Sterling 17)
