VII International Conference on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering

Roma (Italy), 17-20 June 2019

SPONSORSHIP

It is a great pleasure and an honour to extend to you a warm invitation to attend the 7th lnternational Conference on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering (VII ICEGE) in Roma, Italy, 17-20 June 2019.

After the increasingly successful conferences held in Tokyo 1995, Lisbon 1999, Berkeley 2004, Thessaloniki 2007, Santiago 2011 and Christchurch 2015, the Italian Geotechnical Society (AGI) on appointment by the ISSMGE Technical Committee 203 (Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and associated pro-blems) is delighted to announce that Roma will host the 7th International Confe-rence on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering (VII ICEGE) from 17 to 20 June 2019.

As in the previous editions, the conference topics will address, through general and parallel sessions, the most recent developments in earthquake geotechnical engineering, stimulating fruitful technical and scientific interaction within the fields of seismology, geophysics, geology, structural as well as infrastructural engineering.

We believe that VII ICEGE will provide an excellent opportunity to present recent experience and developments to an audience of engineers, geologists and seismologists, consultants, public and private contractors, local national and international authorities, and to all those involved in research and practice rela-ted to earthquake geotechnical engineering.

Last but not least, the ‘Eternal City’ of Roma is one of the most attractive and emblematic locations in the world, thanks to its impressive cultural heritage, the pleasant weather and its extraordinary social life, not to mention the taste of the Italian food.

The Eternal City will offer you a wonderful journey through Science and History!

ISSMGEThe ISSMGE is the pre-eminent professional body representing the interests and activities of Engineers, Academics and Contractors all over the world that actively participate in geotechnical engineering.

The International Society had its origins in the First International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foun-dation Engineering held in Harvard in 1936. A total of 206 delegates attended from 20 countries. In order to ensure continuation of this very successful initiative, an Executive Committee was set up with Karl Terzaghi as President and Arthur Casagrande as Secretary.

As a truly global organisation, the ISSMGE provides a focus for professional leadership to some 90 Member Societies and around 20,000 individual members. The growth in membership has been matched by increasing activities, largely through the establishment of many active Technical Committees and Task Forces.

IN ITALY

ICEG

E7

The seismic history of the Italian territory highlights awful losses in terms of casualties and huge social and economical costs. In sum-mary, since 1000 A.D. 220 events occurred with epicentral MCS intensity ≥ VIII.

www.7icege.com

ROADMAP

In the last 20 years five destructive earthquakes occurred along the Apennine Chain in Italy, i.e. one each five years on the average; the data in the Table show that the induced damage and number of fatalities was very variable, despite the comparable magnitude. Such statistics once more demonstrate that the social costs of earthquakes in Italy are not directly related to the seismogenic activity, but also to the local variabi-lity of subsoil conditions, structural and infrastructural vulnerability and exposition. The influence of subsoil conditions on ground motion and related effects was increasingly highlighted by these earthquakes: the first three and the last of them showed significant phenomena of site amplification, ground deformation and landslides, while in the fourth one diffused liquefaction were also observed. The Italian Geotechnical Society (AGI) produced a significant effort in supporting the Civil Protection Department (DPC) and the communities stricken by these earthquakes, by different experimental and analytical activities regarding the geotechnical aspects of the emergency and reconstruction plans. Such supporting activities significant-ly addressed the development of advanced research in earthquake geotechnical engineering.

In the past two centuries earthquakes with magnitude between 5.5 and 7.2 caused about 150,000 casualties; moreover, they damaged and/or destroyed a considerable part of the Italian historical and cultural heritage, whose value is not quantifiable.

In the last 50 years, earthquakes with magnitude between 5.5 and 6.9 caused monetary losses for over € 150 billion. Even considering the present situation of the building stock and the possible occur-rence of future earthquakes according to the rate of earthquakes in the past centuries, expected costs are of the order of € 2-3 billion per year and are then in line with the expenses of the last 50 years.

Central Italy 2016VISITL’Aquila and the Aterno River Valley

The town of L’Aquila and the surrounding areas of the Aterno river valley were both devastated by a Mw 6.1 earthquake on April 6, 2009. L’Aquila is an ancient town (13th century) located about 120 km east of Rome, at an elevation of about 700 m above sea level, surrounded by the Apennines highest mountains.

Visitors will have the opportunity to observe the status of the reconstruction 10 years after the 2009 earthqua-ke, which caused huge damage to public and private buildings as well as to the cultural heritage. A guided walking tour through the old city centre of what has been defined as “the largest construction site in Europe” will allow to discover the newly disclosed beauty of restored ancient buildings and churches by visiting the construction site of a historic building subject to retrofit works, but also by strolling through sectors where the reconstruction has not yet started (a restricted access “red zone” still exists).

The tour will include a visit to the shallow cut-and-cover excavation works of the “smart tunnel” which is being constructed to host the new utility network (power, gas, water, communication) serving the city centre and the nearby districts. Information on the geological and geotechnical characteristics of the area, on the main featu-res of the 2009 earthquake (including significant site effects), as well as on microzonation studies and on post-e-arthquake reconstruction plans will be provided during the tour.

Starting from the city centre, the tour will continue with the visit to one district of the C.A.S.E. Project, an impressive tem-porary housing program launched in the aftermath of the 2009 earthquake to host 15,000 homeless people, pending the rebuilding of their homes. The project comprised 185 buildings provided with seismic base isolation systems, constructed in just 8 months in 19 areas of the municipality of L’Aquila. It will also be possible to visit some villages located near L’Aquila (namely Onna, Castelnuovo) which were totally destroyed by the 2009 earthquake, as it is still clearly visible.

The tour will then move on to the upper Aterno river valley. This area comprises several municipalities, such as Campotosto, that were dama-ged by the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake and also, but more severely, by the 2016-2017 Central Italy seismic sequence. This village is located near the Campotosto Lake, one of Europe largest water reservoirs, impounded by two concrete dams and one earth dam. The Campotosto lake is located approximately 40 km north of L’Aquila at an elevation of about 1,300 m above sea level, in the heart of the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga Natio-nal Park, and is known as a tourist attraction thanks to its wilderness and beautiful mountain landscapes. A big concern about the dams is due to the presence of an important fault system, activated during the 2016-2017 seismic sequence, which will be illustrated during the visit. IC

Central Italy 2016VISITAmatrice and Norcia Villages

A technical site visit will be arranged to the areas hit by the 2016 – 2017 seismic sequence in the central Apenni-nes, one of the most seismically active areas in Italy. The technical visit will focus first on the Amatrice village, the so-called “the town of 100 churches” that was inserted in 2015 into the list of Italy’s most beautiful ‘borghi’ (historic hamlets), thanks to its Roman, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. During the August 24th 2016 event, Amatrice suffered cumulative effects of damage patterns that led to the complete destruction of its historical centre. A technical team will drive visits into the Red Zone. The reason for widespread damage will be thoroughly explained, the results of microzonation studies will also be presented together with the phases of post-earthquake design and reconstruction.

ICEG

E

After lunch, a visit will be organised to the village of Norcia, which has a long seismic history. Norcia did not suffer extensive damage during the seismic sequence thanks to effective retrofitting measures carried out after the 1997 earthquake. However, during the events of October 26 and 30, severe damage occurred to its artistic and monu-mental heritage such as the medieval Basilica of San Benedetto which has partially collap-sed. Thanks to a number of severe retrofit interventions carried out in Norcia some deca-des ago, we can now learn from past expe-rience through the words of academics an professionals who were directly involved in those projects. The surroundings of Norcia offer a magnificent landscape and pretty small villages among which Castelluccio di Norcia where the “Feast of the Fiorita” takes place every year on the third and the last Sunday of June.

Historically, this area of the central Apenni-nes has been prone to frequent landslides, sometimes with severe consequences. The tour will include several stops at sites several sites where the effects of landslides triggered by recent seismic events are still visible, and also at sites where stabilization works have already been carried out.

Central Italy 2016VISITRoma Metro Line CA technical visit will be organised to the underground construction sites of the new Metro Line C that underpass the historical centre of Rome. Line C was conceived to link the city’s eastern quadrant to its northwest one. Starting from the Pantano terminus in the Municipality of Montecompatri, the line stretches for about 25.6 Km, approximately 9 of which on the surface and 16.5 under-ground, cutting through historic city neigh-bourhoods as Centocelle, Alessandrino, Pigneto, Appio as well as through historic centre itself, before reaching the Prati area in vicinity of Piazzale Clodio. Its completion will create a truly integrated public transport network.

Important historical monuments of Roman Age, such as the Church of Santo Stefano Rotondo, the Anfiteatro Flavio (Coliseum) and the Basilica di Massenzio are mainly encoun-tered along the route of the line. This makes the construction process more problematic due to the presence of buried archaeological remains coupled with the need of minimising the impact of tunnelling and deep excavations on the historical and monumental heritage. A visit will be organised to the construction sites of the underground station at Fori Imperiali along with those of a deep ventilation shaft, close to Villa Celimontana, and of a circular shaft, close to the Aurelian Walls at Porta Metronia. This latter was excavated to install the sleeved grout tubes (tubes á manchette – TAMs) to inject grout in the soil between the tunnel and the wall foundations, in order to compensate for ground loss and stress relief caused by tunnelling. Details about the techni-cal visit will be given in due time according to the activities in progress in 2019, at the time of the Conference will be held. IC

EA truly historical Roman edifice, the building exhibits the priceless markings of some of the greatest masters of the later Renaissance, such as Giacomo della Porta, Vincenzo della Greca and Lorenzo Bernini, whose classic works can also be seen in Piazza Navona, Piazza Barberini and at the foot of the Spanish Steps;

The Senate Room - the Angelicum's most prestigious conference room - is adorned with precious art pieces including the Triptych of St Andrew, Lippo Vanni's 14th century masterpiece, and a crucifix dating back to the 13th century.

Roma, the Eternal City, has just about the richest, fullest history of any town on earth, thanks to its unique position in the world’s greatest Empire, its significance as a religious and cultural centre, its turbulent centuries of aristocratic and papal rivalries and upheaval and along the way acquiring some of the finest art and architecture to survive from the last two thousand years.

Everywhere it is possible to find treasures of incomparable beauty made of squares, palaces, alleys, chur-ches and fountains. It would be very hard to introduce all the tourist attractions that Rome has to offer. The historic center of Rome is one of the biggest UNESCO World Heritage Site.
