With only a few months to go until we will be sending Scrolls of Friendship around the world in September 2011, we are working with our partners to secure the funding needed to produce a festival of the quality and scale that is refl ective of talent and business excellence in Preston, Lancashire, the North West of England and indeed in the UK. The Guild will consist of the traditional civic programme, community events and a variety of major cultural and sporting events.

Future City, our festival site on Moor Park, will be the heart of the 10 day celebrations to mark 10 years as a city and will exemplify the values of the Guild – creativity, innovation, sustainability, the warm Lancashire Welcome and most importantly the People’s Guild. The people of Preston, local community groups, businesses, resident groups and many other partner organisations are getting in touch with us to get involved in the Guild and we want to harness this community spirit to make the biggest and best Guild yet a reality.

Preston Guild 2012 provides a one-time opportunity to capture the attention of a national and international audience and attract ‘all back to ours’ after the Olympics 2012.

What better way to showcase talent and business excellence from the North West of England, along with the rich cultural and heritage offer of the region? The unique Preston Guild celebration - a celebration that has its roots in excellence of trade and service - has brought communities together for more than 800 years. It is a not to be missed opportunity to position the city as a key player in the North West and leave a lasting legacy for the local community.

The Guild is a milestone in the lives of many Prestonians, as well as a major festival that in ’92 attracted more than one million visitors, more than the Rio Carnival. This document provides initial information about the Festival, its background and marketing campaign and outlines sponsor opportunities. We appreciate that the most worthwhile sponsorship package can only be put together in conversation with yourselves. Preston Guild 2012 will offer a range of business opportunities and with your support we will leave a lasting legacy for Preston and beyond.

We look forward to meeting you and your colleagues to talk about how you will get involved in Preston Guild 2012.

Thanks for your support

Preston Guild 2012 is a year-long festival programme, celebrated only once every generation (20 years) and we have ambitious plans to celebrate with the local community and national and international visitors. In 2012 we have the unique opportunity to showcase the best of Preston, Lancashire and the North West of England not just to the UK, but to an international audience, by inviting ‘all back to ours after the Olympics’.

“ Preston Guild 1972 holds a special place in my memory. I was 13 years old (just getting interested in making animated films at the time too) and attended many of the street celebrations and festivities held throughout that eventful and memorable week – from pageants and parades, fetes on Moor Park and a special flyover from, the then new, Concorde and the most amazing firework display I’d ever seen on Avenham Park. As a teenager I was made very aware, from parents and teachers, of how special the occasion was and how unique Preston is in still holding this historic tradition. One of the most meaningful highlights for me was being made a Preston Guild Burgess – along with my siblings, following in the age old custom.”

Guild Burgess Nick Park on his memories of the Guild.

Page 6: Sponsorship information pack

People descended on Preston to attend the Guild, trade their wares, participate in processions, balls and associated events and generally enjoy themselves. Of course, since the advent of Free Trade, the original purpose has changed. However, the renewal of those rights, although now symbolic, is an essential element of the Guild and with burgesses hereditary and honorary arriving from around the world to reaffirm their historic status in the first week of September, it has become a major celebration of social and economic progress and a vehicle for vision of the future.

Preston Guild is the only Guild still celebrated in Europe today and as such is a vital part of Britain’s rich cultural heritage and tourism offer. The 2012 celebration will be the first Guild in the 21st century and the first since the granting of Preston’s city status in 2002. Held only

once every twenty years, the Guild plays an important role in the development of Preston as a thriving and important Lancashire city. The changing times mean that each Guild has its own identity but shares a heritage of over 800 years. Residents and visitors, artists and businesses, athletes and performers – everyone gets involved in Preston Guild.

In 2012 we have the unique opportunity to showcase the best of Preston, Lancashire and the North West of England not just to the UK, but to an international audience, by inviting ‘all back to ours’ after London 2012. Preston Guild 2012 will be a year of celebration and we will be organising events throughout the year to excite people to celebrate, spectate and, most importantly, participate in the lead up to, during and beyond the core Guild period from 31st August to 9th September 2012.

Preston Guild 2012 is the next celebration in a tradition that has been carried on over generations for more than 800 years. The Guild originates from Preston being granted merchant status in 1179, which gave only Guild burgesses the right to trade in the town. The holding of the Guild, once every 20 years since 1542, was a major occasion and the cause of much celebration across the city.

“ 2012 is an exciting year for me. Not only do I hope to compete in the London Olympic Games but also be a part of the 2012 Preston Guild celebrations. Sport will be an important part of the celebrations with the City also becoming the UK European City of Sport. I would like to offer my support to the Preston Guild and hope this is one we will also remember for many years.”

“ Happy memories were at school. I remember we decorated a float with all the kids in the school and stood on the float - I don’t know what it was - waving at the crowd. But probably my crowning moment of Preston Guild was singing in the choir, in front of four hundred people at the Guild Hall. Probably not something you’d associate with me - singing in a choir - but I remember most of the songs we did. It was a great night.”

Guild Ambassador Andrew Flintoff on his memories of the Guild.

Our Vision for 2012Future CityFuture City on Moor Park will be a specially designed tented site incorporating a range of attractions, from a 5,000 seat arena with paid entry to a number of top acts to small outdoor stages programmed for free attendance by our young producers. An activity area, international food court, fairground, exhibition hall, broadcast zone, cabaret venue and other fun elements befitting a future city will all be built for the ten days of Guild week from August 31 to September 9, when the spectacular firework finale will take place against the backdrop of PNE stadium.

We will be scheduling acts during 2011, with some names ready to announce in September 2011 when we launch key headlines for the year. Performances in the arena, which will also house the major youth event, will suit a range of audiences and include major rock and pop names, well known comedians and favourites of stage and screen. We will be working with a nationally known festival promoter to secure the best possible line up. Work is underway this year on Moor Park to ensure that the site is prepared and ready for the build!

The Civic and Ceremonial ProgrammeThe civic and ceremonial element of the Guild 2012 programme is what keeps the Guild traditions alive and has done so for over 800 years. It is the bedrock of the celebrations and it is here where the story of the Guild is best passed on to

the younger generation. We are working with schools to develop a resource pack that not only highlights opportunities to get actively involved, but also helps educate the younger generations about this unique tradition. Every Guild has also been reflective of its time and a milestone which puts the focus on the developments of the city and indeed society. We will make sure that this holds true for this Guild, which will be the first in a New Media age. In addition to the existing traditional scrolls of friendship, we will have a virtual scroll to allow for well-wishes and messages from around the world, as well as a third scroll which is being sent to India, Pakistan and China to include places that have a special connection to Preston’s diverse community. Procession floats, discussion forums, art projects – we are encouraging everyone to look back to the rich history of the Guild, but also to look forward to the future!

The Cultural and Sporting ProgrammePreston Guild 2012 will be a year of celebration, with peaks of activity from September 2011 till the end of 2012. Work is already under way for a range of projects and the Guild team have been speaking to hundreds of groups and individuals about their involvement in the Guild and many are planning their contribution now. In a Take-off call out we have been encouraging artists to come forward with their ideas for Preston Guild 2012. After receiving more than 50 inspiring applications, we are now progressing a number of these projects, all of which include

community involvement and will have their final output during the core Guild period in September 2012. In addition the annual events programme will be significantly enhanced and we will champion participation - being an active part of the event rather than a viewer.

There will also be a range of sporting events, highlighting Preston’s great accolade as UK European City of Sport 2012 and its success in attracting the UK Corporate Games, which are expected to generate around £3m for the local economy and put the focus on Preston’s sporting venues. The Guild 2012 will take the opportunity to integrate this and other sports events into the programme to ensure wide participation across the North West population.

Connecting PeopleOutside the main public celebrations, the Guild 2012 will provide partners with opportunities to get together and network. The involvement of high profile public and private sector organisations will allow for many discussions about the future of Preston, how the city should market itself and how Preston and the wider Lancashire region can exploit their central role in the North West. The event will form synergies between local business leaders, the council, private and public sector partners. This great occasion can bring the public and private sectors in the region together to develop a bright future for the local community.

“ I am born and bred Prestonian and started my football career playing for Preston North End in the early 70s, so events in Preston are still extremely important to me. With each Guild that has come and gone there have been changes to the shape and face of Preston. PNE have been up and down the leagues and the Town of Preston has become the City of Preston. The Guild will once again put the spotlight on our proud city! We will also celebrate the success of achieving UK European City of Sport 2012 status and bringing events like the UK Corporate Games to Preston. The Guild will once again remind Prestonians of their history and let them take pride in what they have achieved, but it will also be forward looking as I believe that Preston has the potential to have a great future.“

“ Each Preston Guild marks a memorable stage in my life. As a seven year old with a vivid imagination and an inclination to daydream, I remember being jolted awake by the real-life magic of the Guild’s torchlight procession in 1952. The last two Guilds have marked exciting moments in my adult life. In 1972 I began a degree in English at Lancaster University and by the 1992 Guild I’d finally got myself a literary agent and was about to embark on a ten year journey to the publication of ‘The Spook’s Apprentice’. With my fourth Guild in sight I am now a full-time writer. So yes, each Preston Guild is memorable. It is a beacon lighting up the experience of Prestonians and it marks and celebrates the journey of their lives.”

Writer, Joseph Delaney, on the importance of Preston Guild 2012.
