2011 Weed Control Guide

W eed management has become one of the top priorities for crop producers. Each year

the picture of managing weeds becomes more complex, in the availability of products, in the timing of use or in the many and varied options and mixes that are available to producers. To simplify the decision-making process and to provide a useful reference tool, Top Crop Manager publishes its annual Weed Control Guide for cereals, dry beans, canola, flax, lentils and peas. As it has for the past few years, Dow AgroSciences is sponsoring this feature, and we are grateful for its contribution.

With this year’s edition of the weed guide, we have decided to streamline the tables, combining some products with the same formulations. It makes for a different look to the guide, but it is a move that we believe will serve to simplify the end product while adding value.

Once again, we have done all we can to make the tables as user-friendly and concise as possible. Keep in mind, however, it is a guide adapted from crop protection resources published annually by each province, and is not a definitive text. Growers should always double-check provincial guides and product labels to avoid errors.

The Top Crop Manager Weed Control Guide is laid out with products listed for each crop by trade name and in alpha-betical order, with major grassy weed products listed first, then major broadleaf products, then the tank-mix partners. We have highlighted products that are solely for herbicide-tolerant crops. This format allows growers to compare their options of grassy weed and broadleaf weed

products. Then, after making their choice, to take the second step of comparing the tank-mix choices and picking one that best suits their grassy and broadleaf weed spectrum.

Product ratings for each weed are the same as provincial guides and tank-mix ratings are based on the better rating for each weed attributed to the products in the tank mix. In some cases, the ratings of efficacy for a product may differ from one application timing to another. Note that this guide includes only one rating.

The ratings provided in the tables should be used as a guide when selecting herbicides. Growers should be aware that the actual control obtained may vary greatly depending a variety of param-eters, including soil type, moisture conditions, weed pressure, weed size and environmental conditions. Also, remember that some tank mixes have additive effects and products may be more effective on specific weeds when used together. As well, sometimes they are antagonistic, and will be less effective on a particular weed than when used separately.

Again, we strongly advise growers to check provincial guides and product labels for full details and as a cross-reference.

Each year, new products are intro-duced and some are withdrawn from the market. Due to publication lead time conflicting with confirmation of regis-tration for new products, we may not have been able to include all of them. We suggest readers make suitable notes in their copy of the chart as new products are introduced.

Tougher, more flexible one-pass control of wild oats and broadleaf weeds.

New TandemTM is the most flexible, high-performance weed control

available for wheat. In fact, only Tandem delivers tougher one-pass control

of wild oats and broadleaf weeds PLUS better resistance management. It

combines two active ingredients that deliver the best possible control of

wild oats, kochia, cleavers, chickweed, hemp-nettle, and much more,

across all soil zones. Get even greater control when tank mixed with 2,4-D

or MCPA. Accomplish more. In Tandem. From Dow AgroSciences. Call
