Spokane Fly Fishers www.spokaneflyfishers.com September, 2016 SEPTEMBER 14, 2016 MEETING SPEAKER: PAT WAY “STEELHEAD, THE GRAND RONDE, THE CLEARWATER AND THE SNAKE RIVERS” By: Jodi Fitts, Vice President SFF In September, our presenter is Pat Way of Northwest Outfitters in Coeur D’ Alene. He is very excited to speak to us about steelhead techniques used on the Clearwater, Snake and Grande Ronde Rivers. He also plans to demystify all the various equipment and nomenclature involved in fly fishing with a spey rod. Pat spent his early years in Denver with his mom. He was lucky enough to have a Big Brother, through Big Brothers of America. That man started his passion of fly fishing. When Pat was in the 4 th grade, his mom, a single mother, moved them out of Denver and into the Pacific Northwest. Here, he continued to learn and teach himself how to fly fish. The presentation will start at 7:00 PM. Please come early for good seat Pat Way and Mike Beard are co-owners of NW Outfitters in Coeur D’ Alene, Idaho. It is the only independently owned Orvis store and they are very lucky to have one of the few certified Orvis Fly Fishing Schools. Everyone in the store is a self-taught fly fisherman and they truly understand the needs of the beginner. Their shop’s philosophy is, “There is no such thing as a silly question.” Their shop is a great place to take a fly fishing class, a casting class (they have their own pond,) or learn to tie flies. NW Outfitters are proud supporters of all the local fly fishing clubs, Project Healing Waters, Casting for Recovery, Spokane Women on the Fly, and they volunteer with the Life Sport classes at Post Falls, CDA and Lake City Schools. ONE FLY CONTEST REPORT - BROWNS LAKE - JUNE 10 TH TO 12TH By Mike Berube

This yearrsquos One Fly Contest was an awesome event There were 6 anglers some new faces in the bunchhellipgreat to see There were several more club members there but only 6 participated This year the Outingrsquos Committee was spot on when they decided to pick a lake Browns that the club had not fished in awhile or had an event at The weather was questionable that weekend The weather even around the 10

th of June can be interesting at

Browns Lake with its location just north of Usk WA We found out who the hearty campersfishermen are in the club because the temps were down and the wind and rain were up Although the weather was questionable all weekend there were lots of fish caught This lake has rebounded and hopefully will be back on our radar for future events As long as you were prepared (we all were) with rain gear hats and gloves the fishing was actually pleasant Thanks to all the hearty club members who attended and made it through the weekend Everyone hit the water at 10 AM Prior to that the formality of registering your ldquoOne Flyrdquo and discussing event rules was conducted More importantly we got some great info on locations of fish and tactics to use from Randy Ishihara and Jeff Voigt Thanks guys They both had 25 + fish days on Friday A combination of rainbows cutbows and cutthroat A lot of the cutties stretched to 18rdquo Most armed themselves with a full sink line and their favorite lake pattern A Black Leech pattern sz 10-12 or a similar size Olive Willy were the flies of choice The Black Leech seemed to be the most productive Randy had eight in his net in the first 30 minutes then lost his fly He crossed his fingers for the next 2 and a half hours That was the winning total I finished second with 7 and Jeff Voigt took the third spot with 6 In total 27 fish were caught in 3 hours Add the 12 more Judy caught (she didnrsquot register or she would have won) and thatrsquos a pretty impressive total for 3 hours of fishing Randy Jeff and I each won a gift a card to a local fly shop ($30$20$10) This event usually has a little picnic following the fishing but due to some personal events I had going on in the evening there was none this year Thanks to everyone who helped with putting the event on and persevering the weather I would encourage all members of the club to consider hosting an event There are some club rules you need to operate by but you really can put your personal twist on an outing Tight linesmdashMike

INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF FLY FISHERS (IFFF) AND WASHINGTON STATE

COUNCIL OF THE IFF BY Rick Newman SFF IFFF Liaison

I am quoting from History page of the IFF website as I feel they know their history better than myself ldquoThe International Federation of Fly Fishers is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the betterment of the sport of fly fishing through Conservation Restoration and Education The International Federation of Fly Fishers and its Councils are the only organized advocate for fly fishers on a regional national and international levelrdquo

The Spokane Fly Fishers are members of both of these organizations The IFFF recently spent a considerable amount of time and effort to restructure themselves They realized that like many groups their members have aged they had few women involved they needed a way to reach more and younger fishermen They reduced the complexity of membership and paid special attention to Veterans reducing their membership costs They have changed from a printed magazine as their primary communications piece to their website (httpwwwfedflyfishersorg) as way to reduce expenses and improve communications In my opinion both timely and well thought out changes There are also many other changes too numerous to mention within this short article However the new IFFF is moving forward on the three major platforms of Conservation Restoration and Education Positive means and methods of accomplishing these platforms are in place There is a new education program designed to interest younger or new fly fisher people in to the sport There are grant monies available for conservation and restoration that can be used on local projects

One of the leaders in this challenge has been Len Zickler You may know Len as the guy that leads our fly casting instruction each year for our fly fishing school Len has been highly involved in all aspects fly fishing the Washington State Council of the IFF and the annual conclaves We are fortunate to have him assist us

In conclusion I invite all of our club members to visit the IFFF website and the Washington State councilrsquos websites (httpwwwfedflyfishersorg) amp (httpwsciffforg) There is a lot more information on fly casting fly tying fly tying patterns and conservation and restoration efforts I have to assume that club members that are already IFFF members already know about and use these sites Membership in these organizations has helped me become a better fly fisherman and I look forward to the recently incorporated changes to help improve our club and its efforts to spread the word about fly fishing

Hello SFF Club Members Has summer flown by or what The summer fishing season is certainly not over yet this article takes us into the beginning of the 2017 season I had intentions of dropping my Membership Chair position and found a couple of people who might consider assisting me in the coming year I really do prefer it that way as I have enjoyed the past year providing my contributions to the club I will be reaching out in the coming weeks to confirm the mentioned volunteers and should have a better idea on how to share some of the membership responsibilities The directory has gone to print With that said we should have close to 205 active member-ships for 2017 and approximately 90 memberships that were not renewed from 20152016 If you have any membership questions feel free to send me an e-mail at
