Terms and condi-ons 1. A$endance is limited to registered
physiotherapists with a current annual prac8sing cer8ficate.
2. All courses can be completed on a stand alone basis.
3. In order to be awarded the SPNZ Cer8ficate in Sports Physiotherapy, all 8 courses and associated assessments must be completed within a 6 year 8me frame.
4. The Level 1 course Promo%on and Prescrip%on of Physical Ac%vity and Exercise must be completed prior to comple8ng any Level 2 courses. All other courses can be completed in any order.
5. Course fees are payable prior to a$ending the course.
6. Course registra8ons can only be cancelled more than 2 weeks prior to the start of the course. In this instance, a refund will be given less a $30 administra8on fee.
7. SPNZ reserves the right to cancel a course if there are insufficient registra8ons.
SPNZ Cer-ficate in Sports
Physiotherapy
The SPNZ Cer-ficate in Sports Physiotherapy is made up of three Level 1 weekend courses and five Level 2 weekend courses. These courses have been developed using the Interna8onal Sports Physical Therapy Competencies and Standards. SPNZ Level 1 courses have been developed for qualified physiotherapists providing sideline management for individuals or sports team at any level. SPNZ Level 2 courses are currently under development. These will be available from early 2016 and are for qualified physiotherapists with sideline management experience who wish to advance their sports physiotherapy clinical prac8ce skills and/or pursue a career pathway in elite sport. Members who complete all SPNZ Level 1 and Level 2 courses within a six year 8me frame will a$ain a SPNZ Cer8ficate in Sports Physiotherapy. For those who choose not to complete the cer8ficate in sports physiotherapy, courses can also be a$ended on a stand alone basis. Level 2 – The Spor-ng Spine, Pelvis and Hip This course will provide you with advanced skills in the assessment and rehabilita8on of spor8ng injuries involving the spine, pelvis and hip. It covers normal mechanics and pathomechanics, diagnos8c imaging, management, rehabilita8on progressions and key considera8ons for return to training and sport. Topics covered will include the neck and thoracic pain in sport; the spor8ng spine and lumbar loading, training of the trunk musculature in athletes, the spor8ng hip and and sports-‐related groin injuries.
Level 1 – Immediate Care and Sports Trauma Management This course will provide you with skills to assess and manage emergency situa8ons on the sports field. It covers emergency life support following collapse, airway assessment and support, the assessment and stabilisa8on of spinal injuries, head injuries, internal injuries and common fractures and disloca8ons. You will learn how to assess and manage emergency medical condi8ons such as anaphylaxis, heat illness, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy. Emergency transport and transfer is also covered, with an emphasis on appropriate communica8on with other health professionals.
Level 1 – Promo-on and Prescrip-on of Physical Ac-vity and Exercise This course provides a scien8fic ra8onale and clinical skills needed for the promo8on of physical ac8vity and the use of exercise rehabilita8on in sports physiotherapy. It covers clinical measures of physical ac8vity, risk assessment for exercise prescrip8on, behavioural determinants of engagement in exercise and principles of goal se\ng. You will learn how to assess aerobic capacity and various aspects of neuromuscular performance. Key principles of exercise prescrip8on are reviewed along with strategies to enhance exercise adherence and screening for return to sport.
Level 2 – Injury Preven-on and Performance Enhancement This course will provide you with the key skills used in the enhancement of spor8ng performance and preven8on of injury. It covers the analysis of physical, biomechanical and technical needs of sport, iden8fying key factors affec8ng performance and injury preven8on. You will learn how to assess athletes and implement an individualised programme designed to op8mise movement efficiency, performance and minimise injury risk. You will learn how to develop a sport-‐specific screening assessment, how to monitor injury rates and target injury preven8on strategies within different spor8ng contexts.
Level 1 -‐ Sideline Management This course provides an introduc8on to sideline management for the sports physiotherapist. It outlines important ethical and professional prac8ce standards for sports physiotherapists, including the use of standing orders, SPNZ’s code of conduct and the latest on an8-‐doping regula8ons. It also includes sessions on pre and post-‐event prepara8on, including warm up, strapping and recovery strategies. Finally, this course teaches best prac8ce for on field assessment and management by sports physiotherapists, including sessions on sports-‐specfic first aid, splin8ng, concussion and return to play decision making.
Level 2 – The Spor-ng Upper Limb This course will provide you with advanced skills in the assessment and rehabilita8on of spor8ng injuries involving the upper limb. It covers pathomechanics, diagnos8c imaging, ini8al management, rehabilita8on progressions and key considera8ons for return to training and sport. Topics covered will include subacromial pain (e.g. swimmers shoulder); internal rota8on deficits and micro-‐instability (e.g. throwing/racquet sports); disloca8ons/labral tears/fractures (e.g. contact sports) mul8-‐direc8onal instability; common extensor tendinopathy in sport and common wrist injuries in sport.
Level 2 – The Spor-ng Lower Limb This course will provide you with advanced skills in the assessment and rehabilita8on of spor8ng injuries involving the lower limb. It covers pathomechanics, diagnos8c imaging, ini8al management, rehabilita8on progressions and key considera8ons for return to training and sport. Topics covered will include posterior thigh pain and hamstring rehabilita8on; the spor8ng knee, advanced rehabilita8on aber knee surgery; achilles tendinopathy and calf strains; common spor8ng injuries of the ankle and foot and management of the difficult ankle.
Level 2 – Sports Physiotherapy in Special Popula-ons This course provides you with the skills to prac8ce effec8ve sports physiotherapy in challenging popula8ons. It will cover key considera8ons in injury preven8on, performance enhancement and the assessment and rehabilita8on of injury in a variety of special popula8ons including children and adolescents, older athletes, athletes with chronic pain, athletes with metabolic and respiratory disorders and the disabled athlete.
