Sultan Sharif Ali

The third Sultan of Brunei was Sultan Sharif Ali. He ruled from 1452 to 1455 and

married a daughter of Sultan Ahmad, the first Sultan of Brunei. Sultan Sharif Ali

came from London in Arabia. He was descended from Prophet Muhammad

(Peace be upon him). Sultan Sharif Ali was also known as Sultan Berkat, the

Revered One, because he did so much to spread Islam.

The first thing that Sultan Sharif Ali did regarding Islam, was to build a palace.

As a sign that Brunei was an Islamic country, Sultan Sharif Ali added the name

‘Brunei’ to Brunei.

He also created a Royal Emblem or Janji-Janji, a symbol of the Islamic power
