SECTION C (25 marks)

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

It started in the middle of 1943, as the Germans were being pushed back from Russia. With raw materials scarce, Tull said, both the German and the Soviet armies were scrounging for metal. Hoarding was punishable by a firing squad. Already a few churches in Hiiumaa had been relieved of their clocks, he said, and the small village of Emmaste was worried that theirs might be next. The pride of the village, it weighed about 180 kilos, solid bronze, and had been in the tower since 1925. I was puzzled by Tull’s words -I couldn’t imagine a bronze clock so large but I didn’t want to interrupt his story. Tull explained that, one night in June 1943, six village men secretly buried the clock in the forest near Emmaste. Their plan was to return it to the tower after the war. But it didn’t turn out that way. After the war one of the young men was sent to Siberia and died. The other five, among them Einar Tark, escaped to Sweden ahead of the advancing Soviet army. One of them, Theodore Pruul, was captured and returned to Hiiumaa after the war. When the Soviet re-established control over the island, he kept quiet, fearing repercussions. The buried bronze clock would have been hard to explain. Meanwhile, other locals searched without success. The villagers had eventually decided that Tark, who was still alive in Sweden, had sold it. This is what had brought Jetter Tull to Hiiumaa. His mission: to find the clock and clear his friend’s name before he went to his grave. Unfortunately, time had fogged Tark’s memory. He couldn’t remember the clock ‘s exact location, and neither could Pruul. When we arrived in Emmaste, Tull directed me to a spot near an old farm. Back and forth I went with the metal detector, the old man close behind. At every beep of the detector, he jumped ahead and started to dig. But, alas, our search was in vain. At dusk I decided to give up.

“Maybe somebody else dug it up and sold it,” I said. ”At any rate, it’s not here”. We drove back to my flat, where he shook my hand, but I could see that his mind was elsewhere. However, I was glad to be through with the whole affair. One day in December I was sitting in the information center, watching rain and sleet fall outside. There were no tourists, so I was a little surprised to hear the outside door open and someone stamping their feet on the mat. A head poked round the corner, and a hand pulled off a wool cap to reveal the unmistakable bushy eyebrows and white hair. “I’ve got new information!” Tull said. He’d visited Tark in Sweden, who told him we had been looking in the wrong place. I glanced at the sleet outside, a sinking feeling coming over me.”Could you come back?” I asked.”The weather’s kind of bad, I don’t think the clock is going anywhere.” Tull would have none of it. ”A man’s honour is at stake!” he said. We rode in silence as the windshield wipers beat out a steady rhythm. Though it was only about one in the afternoon, the light was beginning to fade. We stopped on a gravel road about one kilometre south of where we’d searched the previous spring. There was a grove of trees, an abandoned car wash and what looked to be a grain-drying facility. It seemed a pretty unlikely spot but Tull grabbed a shovel from the boot and let me to the car wash. This is ridiculous, I thought as the light slowly faded and the wetness seeped through my clothes. The old man watched me silently. I think he read my thoughts .He pointed at a small cluster of trees barely four metres from where the car wash had been built. ”Please, just try that one last place,” he said. I crawled out of the ditch and mumbled out loud to myself, ”If this is really some sort of church icon and if God wants us to find it, we will. It is in His hand, not mine. I’m going to go home and forget about the whole thing!”. Not 30 seconds later the metal detector gave a loud chirp. There was something really large buried between the small trees.

Tull swept the leaves away and rammed the shovel into the ground .The blade hit something solid before it was even 15 centimetres down. He dropped to his knees, digging with his bare hands and throwing muddy dirt from between his legs like a crazed fox terrier. I watched in amazement as he uncovered a ring nearly a metre across, certainly nothing that resembles a clock. “Ah, that ain’t it, ”I said, and started to turn away. “What are you talking about?” Tull said. ”We’ve found it ! Get back here and help me! “ I did and as we dug down I saw a huge church bell. Suddenly I recalled that the Estonian word for clock was the same as that for bell. The former usage was so common that I had completely misunderstood the man from the start. “We need help, and we need to tell the old pastor of the church,” Tull said. ”He was in Emmaste when the bell was buried 5 years ago.” When we slid to a halt on the muddy road near the car wash, Pastor Reinvalla was the first one out of the car. He held on to Tull’s arm as they made their way to where the bell lay half-uncovered. He fell to his knees in tears. A couple of old women rode by on their bicycles and stopped to see why Pastor Reinvalla was kneeling. They walked up, took one look at the bell and were off like a shot. Soon villagers from Emmaste began to arrive. Four or five of us tried to pull the bell out. It wouldn’t budge. Finally someone brought a front-end loader. The bell was lifted up and carried about half a kilometre, where it was placed on the floor of the church. The pastor held a short service to bless and welcome it back to his home.
