    The essential spring of all

growth is within you. All that

you can get from without is

    some food - material or

spiritual - with which to build

    your own organism, and some

    stimulus to spur youto activity.

What is really essential in your

    development, you must do for

    yourself.

    - Alfred North Whitehead

A hundred times every day, I

    remind myself that my inner

and outer life depend on the

    labours of other men, livingand

Our MissionWerecognize ourtwin rolesas a responsiblemember of BharatiyaVidya Bhavan andas

a responsive memberof Indiansociety at large, and look at ourself in a wider context as

a 'Beyond MBA' institution by engaging with socially relevant segments, including

under-managed sectors of Indian society, through education, consulting, research and

    publication.

In all our activities, we emphasize the twin objectives of 'Influencing practice' and

    'Promoting value-basedgrowth'.

We influence practices in organizations of the participants of our various programs,

and hopefully, to improve the working of industry.

We also attempt to synthesize the apparent contradictions between western efficiency

and eastern ethos, and competition and collaboration.

In all our endeavours, we emphasize skills and attitudes as much as knowledge,

developing indigenous learner-centric pedagogy and adapting to global best

    practices.

As a self-reliant institution, we seek operational freedom, and encourage an

entrepreneurial, agile and flexible organizational culture towards cooperative pursuits

    of innovativesolutions.

Our community works to realize the objectives of the institution through self-

    accountability, professional disciplineand hard work.

    Deans Message

    Dr. M. L. Shrikant

    DBA (Harvard), Hon. Dean, SPJIMR3

At SPJIMR, the process of preparing an individual for a career in

management is based on the premise that training for professional

education needs to go beyond mere acquisition of information andknowledge. An additional requirement is what we term, a 'managerial

personality', which includes professional, entrepreneurial and

practical dimensions. Several innovative and unique initiatives have

been undertaken over the years to nurture this personality. The

Conclave is one such initiative, which aims at achieving the following

    fourobjectives:

First. The Conclave willfacilitate certain unique learning requirements

of each individual. Uniqueness is a function of the internal learning

attributes of an individual that influence the actual acquisition ofknowledge, skills and attitudes. By providing a forum for academia

and industry to interact meaningfully, the Conclave helps the

individual learner use different sources of knowledge acquisition.

Second. Provide continuous refinement and enrichment of

management science concepts, by capturing the essence of

management practices, which are quite tacit in nature. Practical

issues discussed between academicians and practitioners, can

unearth new dimensions of theoretical concepts, which will enable

    acquiringmanagement lessons beyond conventional means.

Third. Following unprecedented global economic crises, 'rules of the game'

of doing business have undergone substantial changes. This Conclave will

bring together an ensemble of eminent speakers and panelists who will

share their experiences and views, to throw new light on how the industry

should now prepare, to meet newer and bigger challenges thrown along

    their path.

Finally. The Conclave will be one of the ver y important means of achieving

business-academic integration. It will provide a platform for strengthening

symbiotic relations between the institute and industry. Such relations, we

believe aresocietal obligations for an educational institution likeSPJIMR.

SPJIMROperations Management SymposiumIndian businesses are requiredto adopt innovative solutions not only

to improve profitability and customer service but also to reduce

operational costs, without compromising on superior quality and

delivery parameters. This establishes the role of supply chain

management as a critical business fundamental, which is equally

applicable to both manufacturing and service organizations.

Competition within industries or between firms has transcended into

competition between supply chain networks, creating a battlefield of

fierce games and complicated strategies, which require greater

intellectual attention. This leads us to the theme, that we plan to

    deliberate upon:

Enhancing Corporate Competitiveness through Supply ChainManagement

However, this impact has mainly been restrictedto the hands of a privileged few, and has only marginally influenceddomestic growth. But, to continue delivering high performance(depth) and at the same time expanding the coverage, it needs toadapt itself to the sweeping changes in both the industry andeconomy today. The focus on use of technology in aspects of

education, healthcare, governance and in 'more disciplined' financialservices, especially in domestic markets, will become the order of theday, as new verticals and customer segments emerge. SPJIMRMarketing Effectiveness Conclave, 2010With increasing competitiveness and tight budgetary controls, marketing managers are under constant pressure to deliver results,

justify marketing spends and measure the contribution ofinvestments to bottom-line and brand equity. Can marketingimprove business health and aid in the growth? Is it keeping pacewith the increasing manufacturing efficiency? Can the stakeholdersshare their prevailing best practices, stimulate new thinking on howto measure and eventually suggest how to isolate the impact ofvarious marketing initiatives on theirbusinesses?

Two sequential events will cover this at theConclave: First, theSPJIMRMarketing Impact Awards, where only four selected finalists from thecorporate will showcase a recent business problem they havesuccessfully solved, which were measurable and which wassignificantly more impactful than those of their competitors. Second, quite logically thereafter, we move over to ourexpertpanel, to gathertheir viewson:

SPJIMRConsulting Symposium, 2010As the world resurrects from the throes of recession, 2010 requires

companies to have a fresh perspective about managing businesses.

Ability to navigate through, in today's new 'normal' world, requires

sustained innovation that would provide corporations an

opportunity to winin a flat world. Finding these opportunities amidst

the ensuing adversity would be the key to success in the race ahead.

What strategies could be adopted to identify and exploit these

    opportunities? Findout in our symposium:

SPJIMRHR Symposium Sunday, January 17, 2010Leaders, managers andeveryone associated with HR, love this maxim,

employees are the most important assets. Yet, most of them still

regard and manage employees as costs. The role of HR in not only

negating this but also in delivering value to the organization is of

paramount importance. Aligning HR practices to strategies and

business requirements make the entire effort of this value creation

proactive. Creating value is and should be the foundation of HR

architecture, based on which organizational capabilities are required

to be created and sustained. Seeking clarity and direction to such a

foundation thus needs to be discussedaround thetheme:
