The malacological collection
of the Zoological Museum of
Moscow State University
with a history of over 200
years, possesses a consider-
able type collection of mol-
luscs, marine as well as land
molluscs. This collection,
foundedby Fisher von Wald-
heim consists of specimens
of 539 taxa of which 258
taxa are represented by
nomenclatural types (holo-
types, lectotypes, syntypes)
of all classes of molluscs.
This book is a complete cata-
logue of this type collection.
The authors do not give
descriptions, only the scien-
tific names, synonyms, type
locations, and references to
the original descriptions of
all mentioned species. Many
species are illustrated by the
original drawings, others by
b/w photographs which are
specially made for this cata-
logue. References and an in-
dex complete this book. In
English and Russian.

This interesting book deals
with all kind of dangerous
marine animals: only a small
part (pages 46-57) is devoted
to the molluscs. The authors
give details about the dan-
gerous animals: where they
live, why they are dangerous
and what can be done to
avoid biting or poisoning.
The most dangerous mol-
luscs are the Conidae in par-
ticular Conus geographusand Conus textile, and the
cephalopodsbelonging to the
genus Hapalochlaena, the
Ring Octopus. The book de-
scribes also the symptoms
when you are bitten or poi-soned and what can be done
about it (first aid). In Dutch.
Dit interessante boek be-
spreekt allerlei gevaarlijke
zeedieren; slechts een klein
gedeelte (blzz. 46-57) is ge-
wijd aan de weekdieren. De
schrijvers geven bijzonder-
heden over de gevaarlijke
dieren: waar ze leven, waar-
om zij gevaarlijk zijn en wat
men kan doen om beten of
vergiftiging te voorkomen.
De gevaarlijkste weekdieren
zijn de Conidae, waarvan in
het bijzonder Conus geogra-
phus en Conus textile, en de
inktvissen behorende tot het
genus Hapalochlaena, de
ringoctopus. Het boek be-
schrijft ook de symptomen
van een beet ofeen vergifti-
ging en wat men ertegen kan
doen (eerste hulp).WF

anatomy, the systematics and
evolution, the geographical
distribution, the ecology and
biology. 88 species trom the
Chinese Seas are described,
with detailsabout the distrib-
ution and nomenclatural pro-
blems. Each genus begins
with an identificationkey. The references are divided in
two parts: the Chinese and
the other ones. In Chinese
with an English abstract
which gives also the identifi-
cationkeys for the genera.

88 soorten uit de Chinese
Zee worden beschreven met
bijzonderheden over de ver-
spreiding en nomenclatuur-
problemen. Elk genus vangt
aan met een determinatie-
sleutel. De geraadpleegde li-
teratuur is verdeeld in twee
delen: de Chinese en de ove-

The last book about this
region dates from 1977:
Seashells from Cape Verde
Islands by L.P.Burnay &
A.A. Monteiro, with only 47
species. In this new book
208 species are described
and illustrated in systematic
order, partly the results of
two scientific expeditions:CANCAP (1978-1979) and
CPAS (1998), Apart from the
shell descriptions the authors
also give informationabout
ecology and distribution. No
details about the animals. A
glossary, a bibliography and
an index complete this guide.
Het laatstverschenen boek
over deze regio dateert uit
1977: Seahells from Cape
Verde Islands doorL.P. Bur-
may en A.A. Monteiro, met
slechts 47 soorten. In dit
nieuwe boek worden 208
soorten besproken en afge-beeld in volgorde van de sys-
tematiek, hetgeen deels is te
danken aan de resultaten van
een tweetal wetenschappe-
lijke expedities: CANCAP
(1978-1979) en CPAS (1998).
Behalve de beschrijvingenvan de schelpen wordt ook
informatie verschaft over de
ecologie en verspreiding.Geen bijzonderheden over de
dieren. Een verklarende
woordenlijst, literatuurlijst

This guide introducés 220 of
the most familiar species
which inhabit the beaches,
shallow waters and intertidal
areas along the northwestern
coast of America from Cali-

Arctic in the north. 110 bi-
valves (among which is one
brachiopod), 93 gastropods,
2 tusk shells and 15 chitons.
One part (the colour guide)
gives reasonable colour pho-
tographs of the species with
size, range and habitat. The
other part (the black-and-
white guide) gives the same
details but also descriptionsand some comments. A spe-
cial section is devoted to the
siphons of some bivalves
with a siphon identification

In this book one of the
authors of the "Guide to
Worldwide Cowries" divides
the genus Zoila into five
groups: decipiens-group,
venusta-group, marginata-
group, roselli-gxoup and
friendii- group, with 11 spe-
cies, 8 subspecies and sever-
al forms and variations (the
latter two without taxonomi-
cal value). The author brings
a revised approach to evalu-
ate "the systematic units
'species' and 'subspecies'",which approach as well as
the interpretation may be
considered controversial by
some according to LindsayT. Groves in the foreword.
After some introductory
chapters the systematic part
gives a description of the
shells of all (sub)species and
forms, details about the dis-
tribution (all are from west
or south Australia), habitat
and size range. No details
about the animals. A discus-
sion is followed by refer-
ences and distribution maps.
Recent literature is included.
The second part of the book
consists of colour plates with
nice digital photographs of
the shells which mainly
belong to the private collec-
tion of the author. Some
plates should have a lighter
background because of the
dark (nearly black) colour of
the depicted specimens.
In dit boek verdeelt een van
de auteurs van de "Guide to
World-wide Cowries" het
genus Zoila in vijf groepen:
decipiens-groep, venusta-
groep, marginata-groep,
roselli-groep en friendii-
groep, met 11 soorten, 8 on-
dersoorten en verscheidene-
ne formae en variëteiten (de
laatste twee zonder taxono-
mische betekenis). De schrij-
ver introduceert een afwijk-
ende benadering om "de sys-
tematische eenheden 'soort'
en 'ondersoort'"
te evalue-
ren, een benadering die sa-
men met de interpretatie vol-
gens Lindsy T. Groves in het
voorwoord door sommigen
als controversieel kan wor-
den beschouwd. Na enkele
inleidende hoofdstukken
geeft het systematisch ge-
deelte een beschrijving van
de schelpen van alle (onder-
soorten en vormen, bijzon-
derheden over de versprei-
ding (alle komen uit West- of
Zuid-Australië), habitat en
afmetingreeks. Een bespre-
king wordt gevolgd door een
literatuuropgave en versprei-
dingkaartjes. Recente litera-
tuur is verwerkt. Het tweede
deel van het boek bestaat uit
kleurplaten met fraaie digi-
tale foto's van de schelpendie hoofdzakelijk tot de pri-vé-collectie van de auteur
behoren. Enkele platen vra-
gen om een lichtere achter-
grond wegens de donkere
(bijna zwarte) kleur van de
afgebeelde exemplaren.

This is a private edition of
the author. Research on some
taxonomical problems of this
poorly studied group led him
to "quite a few important dis-
coveries of interesting facts
on the world-wide genus
Mitromorpha". These are
brought together in this
paper. Ten species are de-
scribed as new to science: M.
(Mitrolumna) mediterranea
ffom the Mediterranean Sea,M. (M.) denizi from western
Sahara, M. (M.) canariensis,
M. (M.) swinneni. M. (M.)
gofasi, M. (M.) engli, M. (M.)
cachiai, M. (M.) hierroensis
from the Canary Islands, M.
(M.) azorensis from the
Azores and M. (M.) philip-
pinensis from the Philip-
pines. The book ends with a
selected bibliography.
wereldwijde genus Mitro-
morpha”. Deze zijn samen-
gebracht in dit werk. Tien
soorten zijn als nieuw be-
schreven: M. (Mitrolumna)

M.
van de
Canarische Eilanden, M. (M,)

Muricidae are described and
illustrated. 60 species are
dealt with of which eight
were introduced from else-

Twelve Japanese authors
worked on this tremendous
book. The text is in Japanese
and English. This book deals
with all classes of the Mol-
lusca which occur in Japan-
ese waters. Each species is
described briefly, usuallywith details about the habitat
and distribution and with
some synonymy. The sys-
tematic part is the most
important one with colour
pictures of nearly all the
5106 (!) species dealt with.
Often more than one picture
per species are given, some-
times with a photograph of
the living animal. An index
completes the book, without
any doubt a record in depict-
ing so many species in
colour in one book.
In totaal hebben twaalf Ja-
panse auteurs gewerkt aan
dit formidabele boek. De
tekst is in het Japans en En-
gels. In dit boek worden alle
klassen der weekdieren be-
handeld, die in Japan voor-
komen. Per soort wordt een
korte beschrijving gegeven,
meestal voorzien van habitat
en verspreidingsgegevens en
soms enige synonymie. Het
belangrijkst is het systema-
tisch deel met zijn kleurenaf-
beeldingen, gegeven voor
bijna alle van de behandelde
5106 (!) soorten. Vaak wor-
den meer dan één afbeelding
per soort gegeven, of ook
een afbeelding van een le-
vend exemplaar. Een register
complementeert het boek,
dat zonder twijfel het record
heeft van de meeste soorten
in kleur afgebeeld in één
boek. HD
The author lives on one of
the Kerama Islands, part of

only in Japanese. The many
photographs (often more
than four per page) of the
slugs, which are ordered sys-
tematically, bear the scientif-
ic name, the location and the
size ofeach depicted species
in English. A nice booklet
for those who love sea slugs.
