Spirogyra #4 • DESIGNED, PIECED, AND QUILTED BY: Caryl Bryer Fallert DATE: 2012 SIZE: 30" wide x 30" high (76cm x 76cm) COLORS: Blue, green, red, yellow gradations MATERIALS: Fabric: 100% cotton fabric • Batting: 50% cotton / 50% bamboo • polyester thread TECHNIQUES: Machine pieced & quilted IDENTIFYING MARKS: Signature & label OWNER: Caryl Bryer Fallert PHOTO: Caryl Bryer Fallert PRICE: $3200.00 Design Concept & Process: For many years a small clipping from a magazine hung over my desk. It was a picture taken through a microscope of spirogyra, a single-cell, filamentous algae, commonly known as pond scum. This the fourth quilt I have made, inspired by the patterns of dots and curving stripes found in that image. This one is quite different from the original inspiration but evolved from the three previous quilt designs. This entire quilt is a study in intersecting color and value gradations. The fabrics used are all from my Gradations collection for Benartex. The quilt top, including the dots, was pieced using my hybrid “applipiecing” method. Directions for applipiecing can be found at paperpieces.com. The dots are quilted in a pebbly pattern with thread that matches the background fabric, so the pebbles appear to float. The background fabrics are quilted in a small meander pattern with matching thread. The yellow and green stripes are quilted in wavy lines that echo the edges of the templates. The binding is a patterned fabric from my Multi-Tye-Dye collection for Benartex. Design Concept & Process:

For many years a small clipping from a magazine hung over my desk. It was a picture

taken through a microscope of spirogyra, a single-cell, filamentous algae, commonly

known as pond scum. This the fourth quilt I have made, inspired by the patterns of dots

and curving stripes found in that image. This one is quite different from the original

inspiration but evolved from the three previous quilt designs. This entire quilt is a

study in intersecting color and value gradations. The fabrics used are all from my

Gradations collection for Benartex.

The quilt top, including the dots, was pieced using my hybrid “applipiecing” method. Directions for applipiecing can be

found at paperpieces.com. The dots are quilted in a pebbly pattern with thread that matches the background fabric, so the

pebbles appear to float. The background fabrics are quilted in a small meander pattern with matching thread. The yellow

and green stripes are quilted in wavy lines that echo the edges of the templates. The binding is a patterned fabric from my

Multi-Tye-Dye collection for Benartex.
