Role of spirituality in influencing / enhancing Managerial effectiveness
An accumulation of skill set or knowledge, maturity & wisdom to handle situations and a
persons state of mind during decision making is the measure of managerial effectiveness. To
be highly effective as a manager one should learn to balance their five components ofpersonality: Physical, Emotional, Intellectual, Self-image/Ego and Spiritual. Gita Shibir classes
have enlightened us of the spiritual quotient that one possesses and high spiritual quotient can
be achieved by having Daivi sampatti (Inner Wealth). When it comes to managerial
effectiveness one needs to possess high level of self-management, stress management and self
motivation. These qualities are developed when one undertakes a process of cultivating these
qualities. Every manager possesses a particular set of values and goals. So to be effective one
should first align their personal goals with the organizational goals. Any sort of misalignment
may lead to underperformance of otherwise high performers in some other situation/place.
Like the saying goes Everyone is born a saint, inner Qualities like honesty, dedication to
duties, loving, kindness, respect for others, tolerance etc are naturally acquired values that we
possess and often are perceived as impossible to have. But these are the same qualities that
help us achieve our goals by providing tremendous mental strength and social support.
Though many would measure effectiveness of a manager by gauging the end result, but
effectiveness also includes how the target was achieved. A manager is effective if he knows the
art and importance of influencing people by leading by example rather than his official position.
To channelize one's energy towards attainment of the organization's goals it is important to
understand the motivating forces and moral proclivity of the workforce. During the times ofcrisis one can take smart and impactful decisions only with a positive frame of mind which can
be achieved by understanding self and staying in touch with ones spiritual side.
Another parameter for effectiveness of a manager is the context and culture of the place in
which the organization operates. Ethically in every action there is a crucial and rather fundamental
requirement and expectation from a good manager. He can have access to several confidential company
resources and documents at a higher position. It is imperative that he maintains integrity and takes
utmost care in handling and using them. Negative values often flows from higher level of organization to
the lower rungs and gets imbibed in the culture of the organization. A dishonest manager almost always
is used as an alibi by the subordinates.
In today's materialistic world which is growing at a high pace and going to higher levels of
capitalism spirituality assumes a larger role. Emotional maturity and spiritual reflections help us
to stay close to the realities of life and creates a profound and meaningful impact on the larger
society than just the organization we work for. This helps us answer the simple question we ask
ourselves, Whatis the meaning and purpose of our existence?
