B. Illustration from the BibleExodus 18:13-2313The next day, Moses took his seat to hear the people’s disputes against each other. They waited before him from morning till evening.14When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?”15Moses replied, “Because the people come to me to get a ruling from God. 16When a dispute arises, they come to me, and I am the one who settles the case between the quarreling parties. I inform the people of God’s decrees and give them his instructions.”17“This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed. 18“You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself. 19Now listen to me, and let

me give you a word of advice, and may God be with you. You should continue to be the people’s representative before God, bringing their disputes to him. 20Teach them God’s decrees, and give them his instructions. Show them how to conduct their lives. 21But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten. 22They should always be available to solve the people’s common disputes, but have them bring the major cases to you. Let the leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the load, making the task easier for you. 23If you follow this advice, and if God commands you to do so, then you will be able to endure the pressures, and all these people will go home in peace.”

Lesson: “One is too small a number to achieve greatness.” You need others to accomplish the task in efficient and effective way. You need people to go with you. And it takes leadership skill to make people follow you and go with you.

II. UNDERSTANDING LEADERSHIPA. Leadership Definition

- Leadership is influence, influencing other people to go with you.o “The very essence of all power to influence lies in getting the other person to

participate.” (Harry A. Overstreet)o “He who thinketh he leadeth and hath no one following him is only taking a walk.”

(John Maxwell)- Leadership is the ability to influence the people to go with you and bring them from here to

there

B. Important Leadership Elements 1. Knowledge – knowledge is an understanding of information.

- I KNOW it2. Skills – skills is an ability to perform task. A skill is useless without knowledge.

- I CAN do it3. Attitude – attitude is internal driver for behaviour – to do it or not to do it

- I WILL do it

Given that there is high level of knowledge and skills, the success or failure of any organization depends in the attitude of its member or constituents.

Page 3: Spirituality in Leadership

Right attitude is a MUST if you want to go from HERE TO THERE. Right attitude is a MUST if you want to go from NOTHING TO SOMETHING. Right attitude is a MUST if you want to go FROM ORDINARY TO EXTRA-ORDINARY. Right attitude distinguish a good leader from a bad one.

4. Vision – Know where you are going- Leading is giving the people a direction where to go and influencing them to go there with

you- Proverbs 29: 18 Where there is no vision, the people perish…(KJV)- Proverbs 28:18 Without revelation people run wild…

God-given dream is called vision while personal dream is called ambition. Selfish ambition comes when you force everything to happen in your own way at your own time just to achieve your dream/desire.

Great vision comes from God. When you neglect God and take Him out of the picture in your organization, you will just see your picture and every dream you want to achieve. Most of the problems in the organization are caused by people who only see themselves and their dreams.

5. Influence - Influence is not acquired. It is earned throughout life journey.

III. UNDERSTANDING THE 5 LEVELS OF LEADERSHIP (John Maxwell ‘Developing the Leader Within You”)

Position – RightsPeople follow because they have to. Note: The longer you stay here, the higher the turnover and the lower the morale of subordinates.

Permission – RelationshipsPeople follow because they want to. This level allows work to be fun. Caution: Staying too long on this level without rising will cause highly motivated people to become restless.

Production – ResultsPeople follow because of what you have done for the organization. Note: This is where success is sensed by most people. They like you and what you are doing. Problems are fixed with very little effort because of momentum.

People Development - ReproductionPeople follow because of what you have done for them. Note: This is where long-range growth occurs. Your commitment to developing leaders will ensure ongoing growth to the organization and to people. Do whatever you can to achieve and stay on this level.

Personhood – RespectPeople follow because of who you are and what you represent. Note: This step is reserved for leaders who have spent years growing people and organizations. Few make it. Those who do are bigger than life

Connect this to the Life and Leadership of Jesus

Vision: The vision of God is that time will come that God and His people will live together in His kingdomMission: To seek and save the lost and make them followers of Christ

What leadership style Jesus did?Jesus had no leadership position when He began his mission. He did not use His rights in order

for people to follow Him. But He focused first in building relationship with people until He was able to create His 12

disciples. => Permission: People follow Him because they want to.

Then together with His disciples, they continue the mission and they produce results: People were healed, people were transformed, and people received hope. This is a realization of their mission in the kingdom of God.

=> Production: His disciples follow Him because of what He has done for the kingdom of God.

Then He focused His time in developing His disciples. He equipped and empowered them to do and continue the mission to realize the vision. Most of His disciples became loyal to Him and eager to do the mission. His disciples were able to continue the mission even Jesus was not with them anymore.

=> People Development. His disciples follow Him because what He had done for them. Jesus added value to them

And today, almost all the people in this world have a high respect to Jesus and continue the work He had started.

=> Personhood. People follow Him because of who He is and what He represents

Page 5: Spirituality in Leadership

The reality today is this: You are part of the organization but you are not at the top leadership. But the organization has put you in a certain level of leadership position where it believes that you can be a great help to realize the vision of the organization.

Your personal mission as leader is to bring everyone to the vision of organization. And to bring everyone to the direction of the organization is to influence everyone. And you need the genuine leadership because leadership is influence => influencing everyone to go with you from here to there.

The Myths of Leading from the Middle of an Organization

Myth 1: The Position Myth: “I can’t lead if I am not at the top”Myth 2: The Destination Myth: “When I get to the top, then I’ll learn to lead”Myth 3: The Influence Myth: “If I were on top, then people would follow me.”Myth 4: The Inexperience Myth: “When I get to the top, I’ll be in control”Myth 5: The Freedom Myth: ““When I get to the top, I’ll no longer be limited”Myth 6: The Potential Myth: “I can’t reach my potential if I’m not the top leader”Myth 7: The All-or-Nothing Myth: “If I can’t get to the top, then I won’t try to lead”These are myths because some people think that to better lead people is to be at the top, which is not true.

The TRUTH is you can lead even you are at the middle of an organization. The TRUTH is you can influence the leader above you to trust you, rely on you, and look to you for advice. The TRUTH is you can influence your peers even you have the same position with them. The TRUTH is you can influence your subordinates not because you are in higher position.

V. HOW TO LEAD (INFLUENCE) OTHERS FROM THE MIDDLE? (SOME APPLICATIONS)1. Lead yourself well

- Ephesians 4:1 Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. (NLT)

- Ephesians 4:1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. (NIV)

a. Manage your emotiono Good leaders know when to display emotions and when to delay them – John

Maxwell b. Manage your thinking

o A minute of thinking is often more valuable than an hour of talk or unplanned work.c. Manage your words

o James 3:6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body…

d. Manage your time and your priorities. e. Manage your energy

o Activity without Direction – doing things that don’t seem to matter

Page 6: Spirituality in Leadership

o Burden without Action – not being able to do things that really mattero Conflict without Resolution – not being able to deal with what’s the matter

f. Manage your personal life (including family)o What would it profit a leader to climb to the top ladder of success but loses his

family and friends?g. If you want to influence people, lead yourself first. If you can’t lead yourself, who will follow

you, who will respect you, who will go with you?

2. Lighten the load of the leader above you- Hebrews 13:17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority…Do this so

that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.- You can lift your leader up or take him down. Or you can make the load of your leader

lighter or make it heavier, which do you think is good?- Remember this: If you will help the load of your leader, you help your leader succeed. When

your leader succeeds, the organization succeeds together with you. But if your leader fails because of heavy burden, the organization fails together with you.

- Lifting your leader lifts you also- When you lift up your leader, it makes you get noticed.

o Even others are not aware of what you are doing, the person being lifted surely noticed you. Lifting up your leader must be an ongoing process to make them feel you add value to them so they can also add value to you.

o When you lift up your leader once or twice the leader may respond, “Thanks”. o When you lift up your leader many times, he may say, “I need you”. o When you lift him up continually, he may say, “Let me help you.”

- When you lift up your leader it increases your value and influence. o The lift you give for the leader often leads to the leader lifting you. Load lifters have

a special place in the heart of their leader.- How to lift the load of your leader

a. Do the best you can in your responsibilities and be accountable to itb. When you find a problem, provide a solution. Don’t blame your leader for a problem.

Help him to find solution.c. Tell true information to your leader, nothing more, and nothing less. Good leaders want

the truth – even if it hurts. True information is vital for creating an effective plan of action.

d. Take an extra effort, extra responsibility and extra thinkinge. Stand up for your leader whenever you canf. Promote your leader to others

- When you lift up your leaders, you become a model to your peers and to your subordinates. You are demonstrating them to do the same because it is the right thing to do. Your peers and subordinates will likely help you to lighten your load. If that happens, you earned the opportunity to influence them. It means, it increases your leadership level.

- When you do good to others, God will reward you: Ephesians 6:7-8 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does…

3. Add Value to Others- Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.- Completing with one another is far better than competing with one another- 1 Corinthians 12:21-26 14Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. 15If the

foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. 16And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? 17If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? 18But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. 19How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” 22In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. 23And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, 24while the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. 25This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. 26If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.

- The truth is that every part of the body is valuable. Same also in the organization, every member has value.

- Good leaders know how to add value to others. To add value to others is to help them in their weaknesses and to develop them in their strengths

- When you add value to others they will feel you care for them- Leadership Principle: Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand (John Maxwell)

To be a better leader that adds value to others, understand this Leadership Loop:a. Caring – Take an interest in People

o People don’t care how much you know unless they know how much you careo Touch the heart first before asking for the hand

b. Learning – Get to Know Peopleo Hear stories from your peerso Discover their best skillso Appreciate their differenceso Try to put yourself in their shoes

c. Appreciating – Respect Peopleo Treat others with respecto Appreciate people for who they are and they will be more likely to respect and

listen to you in returnd. Contributing – Add Value to People

o Help your peers to improve and develop without strings attachede. Verbalizing – Affirm People

o Acknowledge their accomplishments. Say positive things about them to your leader and peers. Sincerely compliment them.

f. Leading – Influence Peopleo If you do the Caring, Learning, Appreciating, Contributing, and Verbalizing, you built

relationship with them, you gain credibility and shown that your motives are good.

Page 8: Spirituality in Leadership

With that track record, you have earned the opportunity to influence them. But it should not end here. The next phase is important.

g. Succeeding – Win with Peopleo The motivation to lead must be to see the vision fulfilled and to see others succeedo Great leaders don’t use people so that they can win. They lead people so that they

all can win togethero Once leaders prove that they can help make people’s dreams come true, others

seek them out so that they, too, can be helped to wino If you add value to others and helped them succeed, additional people will come

into your life that you can help and be a help for you in order for you to win together.

VI. CONCLUSIONIf this happens to every person in an organization (referring to leaders led themselves well,

leaders lighten the load of their leader, and leaders add value to others), what do you think will happen to the organization? What do you think will happen to the vision and mission of the organization?

As John Maxwell says, “Everything rises and falls on leadership”. In the Bible in the Old Testaments, Israel nation was blessed by God because of the obedience of the people. This is because they have leaders who were righteous before God. But later on, Israel was led to its downfall. The downfall of Israel was caused by kings who became wicked who led the people to disobey God. So God brought disaster and punishment to them.

Desire to be a good leader. What makes the difference between a good leader and other kind of leader is the heart.

Luke 6:45 (NLT) A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.

Good leaders possessed good heart and they produce good things. Good leaders do not just focus in achieving the goals of the organization but helping also others to achieve their personal goals and dreams. Good leaders do not just add value to the organization but they also add value to the people in the organization.

Reflect on this: “Don't let your failures hinder you to achieve greatness. But don't let your desire for greatness destroy your goodness. Remember, it's far better to be good than to be great.” – rholquotes
