Fifth Sunday of Easter Mother’s Day

The Pastor’s Mutterings

I share a story about Amy Taft when she was a little girl. A reporter asked her to

say something about herself, and she replied: “"My great grandfather was the

President of the United States, my grandfather was a Senator from Ohio, my father is

the ambassador to Ireland—and I'm a Brownie!" No lack of certainty there. Amy knew

exactly who she was!

Lots of people are not so sure. Many people are lost, without a clear

understanding of who they are, or where they are going, or what direction to look.

They feel like a tourist who is trying to find his way around Chicago with a map of New York. Some folks have

even decided that there is no destination at all, that all is hopeless.

That’s where religion shows its importance. Christianity was originally called “The Way.” Jesus assured his

followers: “I am the way, the truth, and the life – follow me!” The truth is in mortal danger in our age of spin-

control and fake news. Truth seems to change shape depending on who is speaking. Amid all the voices crying

out for our attention is the quiet voice of Jesus saying: "I am the whole truth, so help me God."

There are so many possibilities in life, so many choices, but so few models and mentors that we lose our

way and forget who we are. But there is someone very near to us with the audacity to to claim to be the only

way, the whole truth, and the real life. He holds a sign that reads: “If you want to have a life – live in me.”

Perhaps it is time to read and listen!

St. Barnabas Grade Spotlight

Fifth-graders Elliot Long and Frank B. have seen too much about animals who aren’t treated well, and they think all pets

should have loving homes. For the second year at St. Barnabas, students are invited to bring spare change to donate to

the animals at Wright-Way Animal Rescue, which rescues pets from area animal control centers and houses them until

they find their forever homes.

The fundraiser, Change for Pets, ran May 1 - May 5, 2017 at St. Barnabas School. We are so proud of our wonderful

students like Elliot and Frank, who are actively seeking to be the change they wish to see in the world.

Neighborhood News

At our recent donor thank you event for our Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. campaign,

generous parishioners enjoyed tasty treats, refreshing beverages and good

company. Friends were able to visit in a comfortable setting while Fr. Malloy,

Elaine Gaffney and Tina Walker (our new campaign consultant) offered their

gratitude and updates on our campaign status.

Being able to celebrate $3.1 million in pledge commitments is a great blessing

and everyone present was asked to continue to pray for a successful completion to this

important project. During the course of the evening, payments on pledge commitments were

received, a few individuals decided to increase their campaign support and everyone went

home with a colorful yard sign.

These yard signs are a visible way to show the broad support from the St. Barnabas

family of faith. It also shows the wider community how the people of St. Barnabas

are working together to make our parish even stronger.

If you were unable to join us at the donor event but have made your pledge to the

campaign, you can pick up your yard sign at the parish office. Let’s flood the

neighborhood with the message that St. Barnabas is working together toward a

bright tomorrow!

If you have not yet offered your financial support to

our Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. capital campaign,

NOW would be a great time to do so.

Request a visit from one of our friendly volunteers or

offer to attend (or host) a group event.

Simply call Sarah Peterson at 773.779.1166, ext. 222

or email [email protected]

and appropriate arrangements will be made.

Elizabeth and Will Peterson

(grades K and 3rd at

St. Barnabas School),

distributed yard signs with a

heartfelt “Thank you!” to each

donor in attendance.

BOOK DRIVE Mercy Sister Carol Mucha, former

St. Barnabas principal, is conducting

a used book sale at Saint Xavier

University. Proceeds help students

who cannot afford to go on retreats

or do service trips to various places

in the U.S. She counts heavily on the

generosity of others who want to dispose of books of all

genres, even CD's, DVD's, videos, magazines, and small

electronics, including cell phones (they do not have to

work). If you want to help, just bring the items over to

McDonough Chapel, 3700 West 103rd Street, between

9am and 4pm. If you are unable to drop off we can

pick up or if help is needed to unload, we can do that

also. For more information, call Sister Carol at

708-297-4232.

Gratefully, Sister Carol.
