Spiritual gifts On January 14, 2015, Pope Francis presided over the canonisation Mass of St Joseph Vaz (1651-1711), Apostle of Sri Lanka. Joseph Vaz was a native of Goa, India and an Oratorian priest. He arrived in Sri Lanka, during the Dutch occupation, when they were imposing Calvinism after taking over from the Portuguese. Because of religious persecution, Joseph Vaz dressed as a beggar, exercising his priestly duties in secret meetings of the faithful, often at night. His efforts provided spiritual and moral strength to the beleaguered Catholic population. Later, he found shelter in Kandy where he was able to work freely and could reach out to other parts of the country. By the time of his death, Joseph Vaz had managed to rebuild the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka. During his homily at the canonisation, Pope Francis emphasised how Joseph Vaz used his Spirit-given gifts of missionary zeal and love of people to carry out the mission of Christ; an example for everyone to follow. St Joseph Vaz “gives us an example of missionary zeal. Though he came to Ceylon to minister to the Catholic community, in his evangelical charity he reached out to everyone. Leaving behind his home, his family, the comfort of his familiar surroundings, he responded to the call to go forth, to speak of Christ wherever he was led … teaching us to go to the peripheries, to make Christ everywhere known and loved … a living icon of God’s mercy and reconciling love.” St Paul in the Second Reading, reminds us that like Joseph Vaz, each of us has received gifts from the Spirit. Each of us has a special mission from the risen Lord to be good news in the world and we are enabled to carry out this mission because the power of the Spirit inspires and motivates us. We come together today to be nourished at the table of the Lord and to encourage each other to use our Spirit-given gifts to continue Christ’s mission of love to the world. St Joseph Vaz, pray for us! David J. PENTECOST SUNDAY - Year A

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: (Ps 103) R. Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the

face of the earth.

SEQUENCE:

Holy Spirit, Lord of light, From the clear celestial height Thy pure beaming radiance give.

Come, thou Father of the poor, Come with treasures which endure; Come thou light of all that live!

Thou, of all consolers best,

Thou, the soul’s delightful guest, Dost refreshing peace bestow; Thou in toil art comfort sweet; Pleasant coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal, light divine, Visit thou these hearts of thine, And our inmost being fill:

If thou take thy grace away, Nothing pure in man will stay; All his good is turned to ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew. On our dryness pour thy dew; Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. Thou, on us who evermore Thee confess and thee adore, With thy sevenfold gifts descend:

Give us comfort when we die; Give us life with thee on high;

Give us joys that never end.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, Alleluia! Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful

and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia!

WELCOME FR. JOHN: This weekend we welcome a new parishioner, Fr. John Fitzwalter. Fr. John has retired to Murwillumbah. Please say hello and make him welcome when you see him around our

parish.

PLANNED GIVING PROGRAMME We sincerely thank everyone who supports our Parish

through the Planned Giving programme. Your regular

contribution enables us to plan and budget, and is very much

appreciated.

As we head towards the end of this financial year, please

contact the Parish Office if you have any queries regarding

your pledge or giving amounts paid to date. A detailed

statement can be provided to you with your contributions up

to this week. The last date for planned giving in this financial

year will be the weekend of 24-25 June.

New contributors to the Planned Giving programme are

always most welcome and now is the ideal time to consider

joining the Programme as we review our Planned Giving in

the coming weeks. Gifting cards are available at the back of

the Church and from the Parish Office.

We remind you that donations to the 1st Collection support

the Clergy and are not recorded by the Parish for Planned

Giving purposes. Your contribution to the Planned Giving

programme should be placed in the 2nd Collection envelope.

The new Planned Giving envelopes for 2017-2018 have
