    SPOTLIGHTDean Atta

Every month we will do a spotlight

article on a SOLA ambassador which is

brought to you by SOLA 2010 Mediawinners Endz2Endz Magazine.

Dean Atta won the Spirit of London Achievement in The Arts Award in 2009

Dean kept himself updated with the progress of the Stephen Lawrence

murder case, on the night of the verdict after watching several TV

documentaries about Stephen, he felt the a high level of mixed emotions

and decided to use his poetry talent to harness his feelings. Sitting up all

night, by 6am his poem titled I am nobodys Ni**a was uploaded via his

    iPhone on to the internet.

The poem went viral, attracting thousands of hits within hours, after being

retweeted by the likes of Bashy & David Lammy MP, he was featured in

various national newspapers and SBTV assisted him in creating a video.

The Endz2Endz team joined Dean on set.

Speaking to him he said that Seeing the case onPanorama and that the

last word said to Stephen Lawrence was the n-word was the drive for me

to write this poem. On the day we met with various artists including the

upcoming Clement Marfo, that will be appearing in the influential poets

video. Below there are some behind the scenes photos, with some of theE2E team (myself Mia and Seun).

It was amazing to see so many different artist come together to support

Deans poem turning it into a short film.

The poem is downloadable on iTunes Here for 79p of which Dean is

donating 100% of the proceeds to the Stephen Lawrence Trust.

As some of you may know, there is an election coming up in May to

vote for the next London Mayor. Research by the Electoral

Commission shows that only 55% of young people between 18-25 areactually registered to vote.

The Spirit of London Awards is founded on the principal of

empowerment and as such the SOLA Ambassadors felt this was an

important issue to address, so we teamed up with Bite the Ballot and

will be running tons of exciting projects to get young people

reengaged in the political process including:

Debating with Mayoral Candidates Opportunities to work on Mayoral Candidates campaigns Workshops on why young people should register Mass signing rallies Vote match interactive software to help people decide Formulating young peoples priorities for the capital.

The Mayoral race is very close according to the polls and the youth

vote could be the deciding factor. Young people have more power

than they realise and we hope this project can highlight that
